Religious Education Registration REMINDER! Thank you to the many families who have returned their Religious Education Registration Forms by the August 15

th

deadline. If you haven’t already returned your Registration Form, please do so as soon as possible as classes are filling up. Please remember to include the $30 administrative late fee (not applicable to NEW families). Registration form and cover letter were included with the end of year Progress Report and sent home with the children in April. Additional forms are available in the Rectory, Parish Center, back of Church or on the Parish website at stalscaldwell.org. You will receive a mailing with class assignment and calendar in early September; classes will begin the week of September 22

nd. Please feel free to call the Parish

Center (226-0209 x7 or x9) with any questions or to share your talents by becoming a part of our program. Thank you. ☺

Catechists, Aides and Subs – NEEDED! We are still in need of catechists and aides for many grade levels in all of our Religious Education programs: Sunday mornings (bi-weekly) and evenings (monthly), Monday afternoons and evenings (weekly). It takes a combined total of approximately 60 classes to accommodate the more than 700 children and their families attending Religious Education! That may seem like a lot, but many hands make light work. Please prayerfully consider sharing the love of God with the children of our parish as a catechist or aide. THANK YOU to those who have already answered this call. Full time catechists and aides are eligible for tuition wavier. Any questions please call Agnes Egan 973-226-0209 x7 or Ed Karpinski 973-226-0209 x9 or email us at [email protected] or [email protected]. Thank you!

Catechists, Aides and Subs – SAVE the DATE!

SEPTEMBER 15th – We will celebrate Catechetical Sunday at the 9:00 AM Mass followed by our annual Breakfast Social and Kickoff Meeting in the Parish Center. Look for an invitation & details in your mail!

September 8, 2013

Dear Parishioner,

It’s hard to believe that another new school year is upon us. It is

a time for setting goals and considering what is needed to

achieve those goals. The Gospel today speaks to the goal of

discipleship.

The shocking words in Luke’s account of the gospel [“If anyone

comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and

children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot

be my disciple.”] show us how absolute and how radical are the

demands of discipleship. What about “Love one another; even

as I have loved you” (John 13:34). How can we reconcile these

seemingly contradictory demands? How can we “hate” those we

are supposed to love? And, more importantly, why?

The paradox of hating those we love was dramatized in a most

fascinating way several years ago in the women’s finals of the

US Open tennis tournament. For the first time in the history of

the tournament, the world watched the emotional roller-coaster

as two sisters who love each other so much they live in the

same house and share the same hotel room fought each other.

Could you imagine what was going on in the minds of Venus and

Serena Williams as they battled and slugged it out against each

other, suspending their love for each other and at least

temporarily “hating” each other? They had to “hate” each other

because the one was standing in the way of the other becoming

the world champion. The one was an obstacle to the realization

of the other’s dream to wear the world crown. And so they had

to hate and fight each other.

Venus won, but she did not do her usual victory leap and

celebratory display. Instead she ran to the net, put an arm

around her defeated sister’s shoulder and said, “I love you.”

Why did she say that? Because the game was over now and

her sister was no longer an obstacle in the way of her victory.

That was a rare example of hating those we love, and from it we

can learn much about the command to “hate” our loved ones.

The crown of glory that the Father gives us is worth much more

than the passing crown that Venus won on that day. So we

should be prepared to let no person or thing stand in the way to

make us lose the heavenly crown that awaits us.

To be a disciple means that on the list of our goals and priorities

in life, attaining the kingdom of God must come first and then

everything else will follow. That can be easier said than done.

The good news is that Jesus recognizes our human weakness.

It is, therefore, an invitation for us to have recourse to God; for

without God we can do nothing.

God bless,

Agnes M. Egan; Pastoral Associate for Faith Formation
