New Tech High @ Coppell opened its doors in August 2008. The goal of NTH@C is to prepare learners to excel in an information-based and technologically-advanced society. We are committed to leading educational transformation and our instructional program encourages students to learn through collaboration with peers, businesses, and the community. Learners develop problem-solving skills, interpersonal skills, and the resiliency they need to succeed in a rapidly-changing and competitive world. Our curriculum brings together the strength of modern technology, community partnerships, problem solving, interdisciplinary instruction, and global perspectives in a student-centered, collaborative, project-based(PBL)community.

Shared LeadershipSchool leaders take collective ownership of the initiative.

Individual LeadershipA credible and inspirational thought leader sets and articulates the vision.

Community EngagementBroad community sponsorship supports the institution’s initiatives.

Shared LeadershipAs the instructional leaders at NTH@C, our directors model project based learning and technology integration in the delivery of weekly instructional meetings. This supports the campus ideal to empower all, by strengthening our facilitators’ use of technology, scaffolding, and project design in their own courses.

Individual LeadershipLeadership is shared by each individual at NTH@C. An example of individual leadership can be seen in facilitators (teachers) taking turns evaluating data to determine the focus of a Wednesday meeting, designing the learning session for their peers, and the implementing the session. Empowerment is actualized when the practitioners in the classroom identify their need to knows and leverage one another’s expertise to address those.

Community EngagementNew Tech High @ Coppell is part of a much greater community. In our annual campaign, New Tech Gives Back, each senior class works through the PBL model to select a charity to sponsor and

give back to for the year. The give back is in the form of service and monetary means. New Tech Gives Back supports the campus vision of PBL in working with a real charity organization, using the integration of technology to help access resources to make collaborating with a charity possible, and empowering our learners to make a direct difference of the lives of others.

Innovative Learning and Teaching

Student LearningLearning is a personal experience for every student.

Instructional PracticesFaculty are master learners who expertly guide their students through difficult and complex tasks.

Curriculum DesignInnovative and rigorous curriculum is designed to leverage technology.

Student LearningLearners at NTH@C all complete a Capstone project by the end of their senior year. In Capstone leaners identify a concept, event, or idea that has a profound impact on their life, and then develops a final senior project around the concept. In the past learners have implemented programs to help address teen depression, proposed projects to the Coppell City Council to help beautify the city, and worked with mathematicians to develop new programing concepts. The Capstone project is a culminating example of individualized learning that is put in place throughout all four years.

Instructional PracticesAs facilitators, we are both educators and learners. Learning in the field of education to provide better applications for assessment, PBL learning design, and technology integration as well as learning in the classroom about our individual learners. Weekly learning occurs at our Wednesday professional learning meetings, throughout the year in conjunction with CISD and the New Tech Network, as well as during the summer with additional campus specific professional learning days.

Curriculum DesignIn partnership with the New Tech Network of schools, NTH@C implements a PBL environment anchored in leveraging technology in all content areas for course work. MacBook Pros are assigned on a one to one ratio for students to access project briefcases, agendas, project benchmarks, to electronically collaborate with their project group, to develop products, to digitally house their portfolios, and for reach. Additionally, the curriculum is designed to promote interdisciplinary experiences for learners in order to fully realize the school learning outcomes.

Ongoing Professional Learning

Relevant and Timely Professional DevelopmentFaculty engage in a cycle of inquiry that promotes reflection, experimentation, and sharing.

Relevant and Timely Professional DevelopmentFacilitators at NTH@C participate in ongoing professional learning. Each week facilitators participate in professional learning designed around PBL and tools to use in creating relevant and invigorating PBL experiences. Once a month facilitators participate in professional learning centered on new and relevant technology tools, and then send time integrating tools into lessons.

This year facilitators also have the opportunity to participate in the technology challenge. Each professional learning experience is designed around a particular tool and skill to help in fully integrate the tool in projects. In addition to the previous experiences facilitators participate in ongoing district professional learning throughout the year, during the summers, and prior to the start of the year.

Finally, NTH@C facilitators participate in New Tech Network learning during the NTN Meeting of the Minds in the fall and spring. This is an opportunity for facilitators across the nation to share best practices with one another to increase fidelity of implementation.

Compelling Evidence of Success

QuantitativeData is routinely collected and analyzed to inform progress and success.

QualitativeNarrative, reflective, or anecdotal evidence is collected and shared.

Quantitative

Quantitative data is used to assess student growth, analyze campus needs, and used to make campus and curricular changes. Through analyzing state data, student performance measures on MAP testing, grades, Advance Placement scores, and college entrance exam scores, the campus has been able to continuously refine scaffolding design to reach each individual student and provided new learning opportunities such as zero hour course and strengthen driving questions and workshops in classrooms.

Qualitative

Qualitative data is gathered through classroom observation, during weekly critical friends sessions, through learner reflection in projects, and through open ended campus survey responses on culture, academics, and satisfaction.

This year qualitative data has been used to develop the campus technology needs assessment and implementation plan, facilitator survey responses were used to structure and develop professional learning, and used to address lesson design.

Data Example - Learner Satisfaction Survey

Flexible Learning Environment

School Design and FacilitiesFacilities and schedules are designed to maximize learning opportunities that technology provides.

Information Technology (IT)IT infrastructure supports innovation in teaching and learning.

School Design and FacilitiesNew Tech High @ Coppell’s facilities are designed to maximize collaboration, learning space, and to create an environment that embraces the integration of technology. Both large group, small group and individual working spaces can be accessed at anytime based upon the learning design and needs of the learners and/or project. Wireless accessibility at NTH@C allows learners to access online resources and post online projects anywhere in the building at any time. Accessibility is supported by flexible spaces in classrooms and the building that allow learners to work in collaborative groups or individually on projects.

Information Technology (IT)Coppell ISD supports the learning environment of NTH@C through a robust infrastructure including a virtual desktop solution and accessibility of internal programs available anytime, anywhere. The New Tech Network provides NTH@C with a learning platform, titled ECHO. This program is supported as an integrated solution within other CISD softwares. Finally, CISD is dedicated to ensuring hardware is functioning by providing a

full-time technician and a strong learner-led tech-force.
