Have  a  question?    The  Social  Work  Student  Handbook  should  be  the  first  place  you  go  to  find  answers  to  questions  about  your  academic  studies.    The  SW  Student  Handbook  details  policies  and  procedures  related  to  SW  while  also  serving  as  a  guide  to  coursework,  registration,  advising,  and  much

more.    On  this  web  page  you  will  also  find  curriculum  requirements  for  your  specific  program  to  help  you  in  planning

out  your  courses  to  complete  your  degree.  Below  is  the  link  to  the  Social  Work  Department  website  where  you  can  find  the  SW  Student  Handbook:      Bachelor’s  Program:  http://www.humboldt.edu/socialwork/degrees/bsw.html    Master’s  Program:  http://www.humboldt.edu/socialwork/degrees/msw.html

Humboldt  State  University  Home  Page    The  Humboldt  State  University  home  page  is  also  a  very  useful  resource  for  new  students.    Along  the  top  of  the  page  you  will  find  an  index  and  a  quick  links  menu  that  will  assist  you  in  locating  your  webmail,  Moodle,  Student  Center,  Directories,  Calendars,  Maps  and  many  other  helpful  resources!    http://www.humboldt.edu/

Get  Connected  HSU-‐ID  Number    To  assist  in  protecting  students  from  identity  theft,  Humboldt  State  University  has  generated  an  identification  number  (HSU-‐ID)  for  each  student.  Students  are  encouraged  to  carry  their  valid  HSU-‐ID  card  as  various  areas  on  campus  will  require  that  the  HSU-‐ID  card  be  swiped  to  obtain  access  or  services.  You  will  learn  more  about  obtaining  your  ID  card  at  the  orientation.

HSU  Username    In  an  effort  to  consolidate  login  information  and  to  provide  better  protection  of  student  information,  many  components  of  HSU’s  system  use  the  student’s  HSU  Username  (e.g.  abc123  or  abcd1234)  as  a  login.

Student  Center    Student  Center  is  a  one-‐stop  location  containing  all  of  the  information  you  will  need  to  advance  through  your  academic  career  path.  This  site  allows  you  to  access  your  transcripts,  course  schedules,  financial  information,  academic  advisor  and  academic  reports.    Below  is  a  screenshot  of  the  student  center  cheat  sheet:

Email  Policy    HSU  email  accounts  are  the  officially  recognized  accounts  for  email  communication  between  students  and  the  University.  All  HSU  students  are  responsible  for  checking  their  HSU  email  account  for  official  communications.  While  students  may  choose  to  redirect  messages  sent  to  their  HSU  official  email  address  by  registering  a  “preferred”  email  address  through  Account  Center,  those  who  redirect  their  email  to  another  address  do  so  at  their  own  risk.    Having  email  lost  as  a  result  of  redirection  does  not  absolve  the  account  holder  from  responsibilities  associated  with  communication  sent  to  their  official  email  address.  The  university  is  not  responsible  for  the  handling  of  email  by  outside  vendors  or  unofficial  servers.

Moodle  Moodle  is  learning  central  for  students,  staff,  and  faculty  at  HSU.  It's  how  instructional  materials  are  disseminated  and  classes  delivered  on  line.    Moodle  makes  it  easy  for  faculty  to  post  course  information,  conduct  class  discussions,  create  assignments,  take  attendance,  use  Clicker  technology,  distribute  quizzes,  and  hold  and  grade  exams.      For  students,  Moodle  is  the  go-‐to  destination  for  all  class-‐related  information.  Students  can  also  use  Moodle  to  communicate  amongst  themselves  and  with  the  instructor.

Students  should  check  out  the  HSU  Student  Guide  to  Moodle:    https://learn.humboldt.edu/

Elluminate/Blackboard  Collaborate  HSU  uses  Elluminate  to  provide  a  virtual  classroom  or  meeting  environment  for  students,  staff,  and  faculty.      Faculty  can:          *  Create  and  run  virtual  classes  while  maintaining  quality  and  accessibility          *  Hold  tutoring  and  mentoring  sessions  at  any  time          *    Involve  outside  experts  at  minimal  cost          *  Conduct  inter-‐campus  projects  and  meetings  without  traveling    Students  can:  • Replay  class  sessions  at  any  time  to  review  materials  • Meet  with  faculty  and  fellow  students  or  work  groups

Taskstream  This  technology  empowers  educators  to  document,  organize,  and  manage  assessment  processes;  systematically  address  accreditation  requirements;  develop,  assess  and  manage  e-‐portfolios;  manage  field  placements,  internships  and  other  remote  educational  experiences;  easily  and  reliably  administer  surveys;  use  outcomes-‐based  assessment  data  to  demonstrate  effectiveness  and  effect  change;  and,  ultimately,  promote  continuous  improvement  throughout  their  organizations.    In  the  fall  of  2011,  the  Social  Work  Department  adopted  the  use  of  Taskstream  as  an  additional  tool  for  completing  embedded  assessment  of  course  assignments.  Practice  behaviors  were  mapped  to  course  assignments  and  two  assignments  per  behavior  were  selected  for  evaluation.  Students  will  need  to  upload  identified  assignments  to  Taskstream  and  faculty  will  use  a  standard  grading  rubric  to  assess  achievement  of  practice  behaviors.        With  the  user-‐friendly  e-‐portfolio  tools  in  this  software,  students  are  able  to  build  media-‐rich  online  portfolios  showcasing  their  learning  achievements  that  they  can  share  with  peers,  instructors,  parents  and  employers;  submit  documents,  projects  and  other  assignments  to  instructors  for  feedback  and  assessment;  and  maintain  portable  samples  of  work  products  and  accomplishments  even  after  they  graduate.    Subscribers  interact  directly  with  Taskstream's  servers  in  the  "cloud,"  accessing  our  software  anytime  and  anywhere  they  have  an  Internet  connection.  The  secure  and  scalable  online  environment  requires  no  installation  of  hardware  or  software  and  no  special  technical  staff.    Early  in  their  first  term  at  HSU,  students  will  be  assigned  a  Taskstream  username  and  password  and  will  be  asked  to  sign  in  and  activate  the  account.    Support  for  this  technology  is  available  through  the  Social  Work  Department’s  assessment  coordinator.

Peer  Mentors  and  Support    For  a  new  student,  a  university  can  be  an  exciting  but  also  intimidating  place  Even  simple  things  that  experienced  students  take  for  granted  can  be  challenging  for  a  new  student,  such  as  finding  your  way  around  a  virtual  classroom  and  the  learning  management  systems  to  understanding  school  policies  for  registration  for  classes,  and  learning  the  special  language  of  the  university  such  as  “syllabus,”  “office  hours,”  “annotations,”  and  “prerequisites.”      A  small  number  of  new  students  learn  the  answers  by  directly  asking  professors  in  their  classes  or  talking  to  university  professional  staff.  But  many,  many  students  find  out  information  by  asking  friends,  especially  more  experienced  students.  In  fact,  most  new  students  find  their  way  to  the  offices  of  university  staff  and  professors  by  first  talking  to  more  experienced  students.  In  other  words,  the  experienced  students  serve  as  guides  for  new  students  to  help  them  access  the  storehouse  of  knowledge  and  resources  at  the  university.  Moreover,  new  students  will  continue  to  seek  the  advice  of  experienced  students  regarding  decisions  about  classes,  majors,  academic  difficulties,  and  personal  problems.  Humboldt  State  University,  Department  of  Social  Work  offers  a  Peer  Liasion  who  is  available  for  student  guidance  and  support.    Regionally  placed  mentors,  placed  around  the  Northwest  counties  of  California  are  also  available  to  meet  with  students  in  those  areas.    To  learn  more,  contact  the  DL  Coordinator  at  [email protected]  .

Academic  Advising          Based  in  the  teaching  and  learning  mission  of  higher  education  is  a  series  of  intentional  interactions  with  a  curriculum,  pedagogy,  and  a  set  of  student  learning  outcomes.  Academic  advising  synthesizes  and  contextualizes  students'  educational  experiences  within  the  frameworks  of  their  aspirations,  abilities  and  lives  to  extend  learning  beyond  campus  boundaries  and  timeframes.      Students  will  meet  and  select  an  academic  advisor  who  will  provide  mentorship  for  the  duration  of  the  program  during  the  new  student  orientation  session.    The  faculty  and  staff  in  the  Department  of  Social  Work  recognize  the  value  of  this  relationship  and  for  this  reason;  best  efforts  are  made  to  create  a  match  that  will  support  your  personal  and  professional  growth.    It  is  important,  however  for  students  to  note  that  there  are  circumstances  when  the  preferred  advisor  may  no  longer  be  available.    In  this  event,  the  MSW  Director  will  work  with  you  to  provide  you  a  new  advisor.

While  students  will  be  required  to  meet  with  their  academic  advisor  each  term,  prior  to  registering  for  the  upcoming  session,  they  are  strongly  encouraged  to  connect  on  a  more  frequent  basis.

 TIME  MANAGEMENT

1. Review  how  you  organize  your  time.  • Consider  how  you  typically  spend  your  time  each  week.  When  do  reoccurring

activities  happen?  • Assess  how  long  it  takes  you  to  complete  particular  weekly  academic  tasks.

For  example,  think  about  how  long  it  takes  to  complete  weekly  homework  problems,  or  read  or  write  typical  assignments.  Apply  that  knowledge  when  scheduling.

• On  average  you  will  have  two  to  three  hours  of  work  to  do  outside  of  the  virtual  classroom  for  every  one  hour  that  you  are  in  class.

• Reflect  on  what  you  want  to  change  or  add  to  your  weekly  schedule.

 2. Plan  ahead.

• Organize  your  activities  within  the  one-‐hour  slots  provided.  • Schedule  first  the  activities  that  regularly  take  place  on  a  weekly  basis.  Class

times,  meals,  club  meetings,  etc.  • Schedule  times  when  you  would  like  to  study  in  pencil  to  allow  for  fine-‐tuning

later.  • Be  as  specific  as  possible  when  scheduling  study  sessions:  include  the  subject

and  the  tasks  that  you  plan  to  accomplish,  such  as  reading,  reviewing  notes,  or  making  flashcards.

• Color-‐code  your  schedule  so  it  is  easier  to  view  at  a  glance.    Use  one  color  for  your  classes,  another  for  study  time,  a  third  for  breaks,  and  so  forth.

• Allow  ample  time  for  class,  studying,  social  activities,  and  extra  time  for  catching  up  or  emergencies.

3. Make  your  schedule  work.  • Give  your  schedule  a  chance  to  work.  Any  new  habit  takes  at  least  one

month  to  develop.  • Create  a  good  environment  for  study  time.  Use  a  desk  or  table  in  a  well-‐lit,

quiet  area  away  from  distractions.    • Schedule  the  same  activity  at  the  same  time  each  day  or  week.  • Consider  your  needs  and  allow  more  time  for  difficult  subjects.    • Keep  in  mind  how  long  you  can  reasonably  concentrate  on  a  given  subject.    • Allow  adequate  time  for  breaks.  • Provide  yourself  with  free  time  too.  • Don’t  be  afraid  to  change  your  schedule  when  it  is  necessary  to  avoid

conflicts  of  interests  or  to  make  up  for  lost  study  time.
