Congratulations on your decision to join our campus community. Georgia Tech is a nationally ranked, academically challenging, and socially diverse institution where exciting possibilities and opportunities await!

The Office of New Student & Sophomore Programs (NSSP) supports new and continuing student success at Georgia Tech through a wide range of programs. These initiatives focus on fostering the transition and engagement of students in the Tech community. This publication introduces you to a few programs especially for new students: FASET Orientation, Wreck Camp, R.A.T.S. Week, and Welcome Home Month.

These programs, along with our committed professional and student staff, will help you get to know and love Tech.

Our office is located on the first floor of the Smithgall Student Services Building, aka “The Flag Building,” in Suite 141. Please feel free to stop by anytime if you have any questions. We will help you get connected to the right offices on campus.

FASET ORIENTATION Our orientation program, FASET (Familiarization and Adaptation to the Surroundings and Environs of Tech), will introduce you to current students, faculty, and administrators and help you become better acquainted with campus. You will learn about Tech’s rich history and traditions, and you will also meet your academic advisor and register for classes. FASET is designed to prepare you, your family, and guests for the Georgia Tech experience.

The 2014 FASET Orientation Cabinet is an executive board of 10 students who have worked hard to plan many aspects of your program.

FASET ScheduleFASET is a two-day orientation session designed specifically to acclimate students, parents, and guests to Georgia Tech. Day 1 begins at 8 a.m. Students will have planned activities until midnight on the first day; guests will finish by early evening. Day 2 begins at 7:30 a.m. for both students and guests and will conclude by 6 p.m.

Session AssignmentsMark your calendar! FASET registration opens online Tuesday, May 20, at 9 a.m. You will receive your session confirmation after you complete the process. You may attend only the session for which you have registered. If you have any questions about registration, call the NSSP office at 404.894.6897.

Cancellation PolicyAll cancellations must be made in writing at least 10 business days in advance of your session for a refund of the registration fee, less a $50 administrative fee. To request a refund, email [email protected].

Course RegistrationAt FASET, academic advisors in your major will introduce you to your field and discuss course options. Following advising, trained student leaders will walk you through the online process to help you register for fall courses. Please make sure your current test scores and transcripts have been sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admission and that you bring a paper copy with you to FASET.

Summer FASET Housing If you’re living on campus for the summer 2014 semester, you can check in to your residence hall starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 17. For check-in locations, visit www.housing.gatech.edu. If you have

All sessions are available on a first-come, first-served basis with limited availability, including FASET sessions 5 and 6. The conditions set forth for sessions 5 and 6 do not guarantee space for all individuals meeting the

conditions. Other students who would like to request these sessions may do so, space permitting, starting July 15. There is no FASET session wait list.

You must indicate your intention to come early on your FASET registration.

Sessions 5 - 6If you have an on-campus residence hall assignment for fall semester, you may move into your room the day before your FASET session. Check-in procedures are determined by the Department of Housing and will be available starting mid-July at www.housing.gatech.edu. If you have not received a fall residence hall assignment, on-campus housing will not be available to you during FASET sessions 5 or 6. To make other arrangements, see listing of local hotels on page 7.

The Challenge ProgramThe Challenge Program, sponsored by the Office of Minority Educational Development (OMED), is a five-week on-campus summer program especially for African American, Hispanic, and Native American students, but all accepted freshmen are welcome. The program provides a comprehensive snapshot of what is expected of first-semester students, both academically and socially.

Challenge starts June 21. All Challenge students and guests are encouraged to register for the FASET session designated by the Challenge Program. For more information or to sign up, call 404.894.3959 or visit www.omed.gatech.edu/challenge.

Students and Guests with DisabilitiesPlease indicate on your FASET registration whether you or anyone in your party has needs relating to a disability. Freshman students and guests with hearing impairment are encouraged to attend FASET session 3 (July 24-25), when we can arrange for

FASET HousingSessions 1 - 4All incoming freshmen attending FASET will be housed in residence halls on East Campus. Since Day 1 activities go until midnight, all students are required to stay in a residence hall. On-campus housing will not be available after FASET concludes on Day 2.

Sessions 1 - 4 Early ArrivalsHousing is available for $85 if you need to arrive the day before FASET. You may check in from 1 - 7 p.m. in the East Area Housing Office, located at 711 Techwood Drive in Field Residence Hall.

Medical and Immunization RequirementsAll students entering Georgia Tech must submit their immunization information to satisfy Board of Regents (BOR) immunization requirements. It is HIGHLY recommended that students complete the BOR requirements before the first day of class. For full details of all incoming student health and medical requirements, please visit www.health.gatech.edu.

Avoid Registration HoldsTo ensure that no holds are placed on your account, which would prevent you from registering for courses at FASET, you must provide the following:

Lawful Presence Documentation – In accordance with University System of Georgia policy, all students admitted to Georgia Tech must provide documentation showing that they are lawfully present in the United States. Completion of the FAFSA form may have satisfied this requirement. Students who need to provide

additional documentation will receive email notification from the Office of Undergraduate Admission.

International StudentsNew international freshmen are expected to attend FASET 5 (August 10-11) or FASET 6 (August 13-14). International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), within the Office of International Education (OIE), requires all new international students to check in with OIE prior to registering for classes. A registration hold on your account will not be removed until check-in is completed.

New international students are also expected to attend International Student Welcome Week, which will include social events as well as information sessions on topics that are essential to international students. While many of the sessions and events are optional, all new students must attend a F1/J1 immigration session. For more information, visit www.oie.gatech. edu/welcome.

FASET is not just for students; it’s for parents and guests as well! Even if you’ve been on the Georgia Tech campus before, there is always something new to learn and someone new to meet. Because parents continue to play an important role in their college student’s development and education, orientation helps parents and guests create realistic expectations for their student and offers information to assist both parents and students in making the transition to Georgia Tech.

Parent and Guest Orientation runs concurrently with the student program and focuses on topics of interest to parents of new students. Participants will have the opportunity to:

• Attend presentations on academic success, financial matters, housing, parking, campus safety, and more.

• Take care of important campus business (meal plans, tuition payments, books, etc.).

• Participate in a campus resource fair.

• Meet other parents of first-year students attending FASET.

• Attend breakout sessions designed for your individual needs.

• Meet with key campus administrators during our Parent Breakfast.

• Learn about opportunities available through the Parents Program.

We strongly believe that family participation during your student’s transition to college is invaluable; we hope you will choose to attend FASET.

Parents ProgramThe Georgia Tech Parents Program helps parents stay connected to their student and support his or her educational experience. As part of the Division of Student Affairs, the Parents Program hosts events such as Family Weekend, offers volunteer opportunities, and provides meaningful communication to parents and families. Just as Commencement symbolizes the conclusion of a college career, Convocation represents the beginning. Convocation serves as the official welcome for all incoming students. What is Wreck Camp?You may know a lot about Georgia Tech — or very little. Either way, Wreck Camp is for you! This extended orientation experience brings together new and current students and is a great way for you to meet new people, make new friends, and get to know more about campus culture and traditions.

Why should I come to Wreck Camp?• Community

Coming to camp gives you the opportunity to meet other new students in a fun camp environment. During Wreck Camp, you will participate in everything from small groups led by two upperclassmen to color-themed teams to all-inclusive camp activities. While having a great time, you’ll create new bonds and friendships with a diverse group of students before ever arriving on campus.

• TraditionsGeorgia Tech has a rich history of traditions and a great story to tell. Coming to camp ensures you will learn all about these traditions, including singing the fight songs, pulling pranks with George P. Burdell, and practicing for the Freshmen Cake Race.

• YouYou’ll not only be more prepared for transitioning into Tech this fall, you’ll also learn more about yourself through insightful activities and interactions in small groups with our staff. We’ll help you identify your individual strengths and set goals that will help you succeed in college. We want you to have the best first year you can, and Wreck Camp is a great way to get ahead of the curve!

SCHEDULEDay 1The first day of Wreck Camp is about making connections and learning Georgia Tech traditions. Once at camp, get ready for small group time, our annual Traditions Skit, trivia, and our luau social!

Day 2During the second day of Wreck Camp, we talk more about life at Georgia Tech, your leadership, and what it means to be a student here. Day 2 is also when we have our Wreck Camp Games (a field-day competition between our color teams) and the Color War.

Day 3Our final day of Wreck Camp is all about taking what you’ve learned and getting ready to head back to campus. During the day, we have advice panels from our staff on a variety of topics, our awards ceremony for the weekend (including announcing the winning color team), and one final small group.

COSTRegistration for Wreck Camp begins May 1. Wreck Camp costs $200 per student. Need-based scholarships are available. If you would like to move into your fall residence hall prior to camp, you may do so for a fee of $160.

Upcoming Student EventsR.A.T.S. Week 2014R.A.T.S. Week is the welcome week for all Recently Acquired Tech Students! The fun will start Thursday, August 14, and will last through Sunday, August 24. R.A.T.S. Week is packed with fun activities, departmental receptions, campus information, chances to meet other students, and opportunities to learn about hundreds of ways to get involved on campus. New Student ConvocationOpen to all incoming students and their families, New Student Convocation is a ceremony to honor a new beginning. Convocation will be held Sunday, August 17. Just as Commencement is a ritual marking the completion of a college career, Convocation is a ritual that signals the beginning. It is also when new students of 2014 and their families are officially welcomed to the academic community. More details on this event will be provided as it nears.

Welcome Home MonthWelcome Home Month, coordinated by the Office of New Student & Sophomore Programs, starts with R.A.T.S. Week and continues with Involvement Week. It’s a great time to learn about academic opportunities, student organizations, and campus activities. You can view the schedule at www.welcomehome.gatech.edu starting in early July.

Tech Treks – An Adventure Orientation ProgramFASET and the Campus Recreation Center’s Outdoor Recreation Georgia Tech (ORGT) have joined forces to offer three optional Adventure Orientation Experiences. All trips are beginner-friendly, no experience is needed, and all gear is provided, so start your Georgia Tech experience with one of these three unique programs:

Southeast An exciting three-day Rock Climbing and Rafting Adventure with camping under star-filled skies.

MinnesotaAn incredible nine-day Minnesota Boundary Waters Canoeing Expedition that explores the Minnesota wilderness while canoeing from lake to lake and camping each night.

Alaska An amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience for the truly adventurous: our 10-day Alaskan Adventure Wilderness Orientation Experience. Discover true Alaskan wilderness while we backpack, camp, sea kayak, mountain bike, go ice climbing on glaciers, and be on the lookout for wildlife like moose, caribou, and bears.

These incredible opportunities give you a great way to meet other incoming students, increase your social network, reflect on your upcoming journey, get your questions answered, and spend quality time in the great outdoors! R.A.T.S. on RopesGet to know your fellow classmates in a unique way! Sign up today to take part in R.A.T.S On Ropes, Georgia Tech’s Leadership Challenge Course. This day-long pre-FASET event immerses participating students in the 5 Behaviors of Leadership—a high-adventure interactive workshop designed to give them the tools they’ll need to take on leadership roles in clubs and organizations at Georgia Tech. Students will interact 40 feet in the air while working together to solve problems and develop confidence. This unique opportunity is limited to the first 32 students to sign up for each date (July 9, 19, 23 or August 2, 9, 12). Check-in for the program will be from 11 a.m. to noon. Did you know Georgia Tech’s motto is “Progress & Service”? Georgia Tech gives students numerous opportunities to meaningfully engage with our community throughout the year, and we put these words into action starting at FASET. This summer, we will host a collection drive of small toiletries to benefit the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children. We encourage all families and students to participate at FASET. The project will culminate with an event on Friday, August 15, where incoming students will volunteer alongside upperclass students, faculty, and staff to package donated goods for delivery.
