COLLECT Saving God, in Jesus Christ you opened for us a new and
living way into your presence: give us pure hearts and constant
wills to worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ
our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one
God, now and for ever. Amen.
FIRST READING Isaiah 44 : 6-8 6 Thus says the Lord, the King of
Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: I am the first and I am
the last; besides me there is no god. 7 Who is like me? Let them
proclaim it, let them declare and set it forth before me. Who has
announced from of old the things to come? Let them tell us what is
yet to be. 8 Do not fear, or be afraid; have I not told you from of
old and declared it? You are my witnesses! Is there any god besides
me? There is no other rock; I know not one. Hear the word of the
Lord: thanks be to God.
PSALM 139 : 1-11, 23-24 At 8am the congregation join in saying
the text in bold. At 10.30am please sing the response after the

1 O Lord, you have searched me out and known me: you know when I
sit or when I stand, you comprehend my thoughts long before. 2 You
discern my path and the places where I rest: you are acquainted
with all my ways. Response 3 For there is not a word on my tongue:
but you, Lord, know it altogether. 4 You have encompassed me behind
and before: and have laid your hand upon me. 5 Such knowledge is
too wonderful for me: so high that I cannot endure it. Response 6
Where shall I go from your spirit: or where shall I flee from your
presence? 7 If I ascend into heaven you are there: if I make my bed
in the grave you are there also. Response 8 If I spread out my
wings towards the morning: or dwell in the uttermost parts of the
sea, 9 even there your hand shall lead me: and your right hand
shall hold me. Response 10 If I say, 'Surely the darkness will
cover me: and the night will enclose me', 11 The darkness is no
darkness with you, but the night is as clear as the day: the
darkness and light are both alike. Response 23 Search me out, O
God, and know my heart:
put me to the proof and know my thoughts. 24 Look well lest
there be any way of wickedness in me:
and lead me to the way that is everlasting. Response SECOND
READING Ephesians 6 : 10-20
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his
power. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, so that you may be able
to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not
against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against
the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present
darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly
places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armour of God, so that you
may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done
everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, and fasten the belt
of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of
righteousness. 15 As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make
you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. 16 With all of these,
take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all
the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of
salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and
supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in
supplication for all the saints. 19 Pray also for me, so that when
I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness
the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in
chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak. Hear
the word of the Lord: thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING Matthew 13 : 24 - 30 At 10.30am, please join in
singing the Alleluia
Ferial Sarum F
Alleluia! Alleluia! Lord make your face shine upon us; unfold
your word and give us light. Alleluia! The Lord be with you. And
also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according
to St Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 24 He put before
them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to
someone who sowed good seed in his field; 25 but while everybody
was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then
went away. 26 So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the
weeds appeared as well. 27 And the slaves of the householder came
and said to him, “Master, did you not sow good seed in your field?
Where, then, did these weeds come from?” 28 He answered, “An enemy
has done this.” The slaves said to him, “Then do you want us to go
and gather them?” 29 But he replied, “No; for in gathering the
weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. 30 Let both of
them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will
tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles
to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’ For the Gospel
of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Listen sweet dove unto my song, And spread thy golden wings in
me; Hatching my tender heart so long, Till it get wing and flie
away with thee.
The sunne which once did shine alone, Hung down his head and
wisht for night, When he beheld twelve sunnes for one Going about
the world and giving light.
Such glorious gifts thou dost bestow The earth did like a heav’n
appeare, The starres were coming down to know If they might mend
their wages and serve here.
Lord though we change thou art the same, The same sweet God of
love and light: Restore this day for thy great name, Unto his
ancient and miraculous right.
Postlude: Festival Finale – Malcolm Archer (b.1952): Mr
Siegfried Franke, Cathedral Organist
PSALM 86 : 4-12 Sung by the choir 4 Comfort the soul of thy
servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. 5 For thou,
Lord, art good and gracious: and of great mercy unto all them that
call upon thee. 6 Give ear, Lord, unto my prayer: and ponder the
voice of my humble desires. 7 In the time of my trouble I will call
upon thee: for thou hearest me. 8 Among the gods there is none like
unto thee, O Lord: there is not one that can do as thou doest. 9
All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship thee, O
Lord: and shall glorify thy Name. 10 For thou art great, and doest
wondrous things: thou art God alone. 11 Teach me thy way, O Lord,
and I will walk in thy truth: O knit my heart unto thee, that I may
fear thy Name. 12 I will thank thee, O Lord my God, with all my
heart: and will praise thy Name for evermore.
FIRST READING Genesis 29 : 1-14 29 Jacob went on his journey,
and came to the land of the people of the east. 2 As he looked, he
saw a well in the field and three flocks of sheep lying there
beside it; for out of that well the flocks were watered. The stone
on the well’s mouth was large, 3 and when all the flocks were
gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone from the mouth
of the well, and water the sheep, and put the stone back in its
place on the mouth of the well. 4 Jacob said to them, ‘My brothers,
where do you come from?’ They said, ‘We are from Haran.’ 5 He said
to them, ‘Do you know Laban son of Nahor?’ They said, ‘We do.’ 6 He
said to them, ‘Is it well with him?’ ‘Yes,’ they replied, ‘and here
is his daughter Rachel, coming with the sheep.’ 7 He said, ‘Look,
it is still broad daylight; it is not time for the animals to be
gathered together. Water the sheep, and go, pasture them.’ 8 But
they said, ‘We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together,
and the stone is rolled from the mouth of the well; then we water
the sheep.’ 9 While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came
with her father’s
-
6
sheep; for she kept them. 10 Now when Jacob saw Rachel, the
daughter of his mother’s brother Laban, and the sheep of his
mother’s brother Laban, Jacob went up and rolled the stone from the
well’s mouth, and watered the flock of his mother’s brother Laban.
11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel, and wept aloud. 12 And Jacob told
Rachel that he was her father’s kinsman, and that he was Rebekah’s
son; and she ran and told her father. 13 When Laban heard the news
about his sister’s son Jacob, he ran to meet him; he embraced him
and kissed him, and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban all
these things, 14 and Laban said to him, ‘Surely you are my bone and
my flesh!’ And he stayed with him for a month.
SECOND READING Romans 9 : 30 – 10 : 4 30 What then are we to
say? Gentiles, who did not strive for righteousness, have attained
it, that is, righteousness through faith; 31 but Israel, who did
strive for the righteousness that is based on the law, did not
succeed in fulfilling that law. 32 Why not? Because they did not
strive for it on the basis of faith, but as if it were based on
works. They have stumbled over the stumbling-stone, 33 as it is
written, ‘See, I am laying in Zion a stone that will make people
stumble, a rock that will make them fall, and whoever believes in
him will not be put to shame.’ 10.1 Brothers and sisters, my
heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be
saved. 2 I can testify that they have a zeal for God, but it is not
enlightened. 3 For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes
from God, and seeking to establish their own, they have not
submitted to God’s righteousness. 4 For Christ is the end of the
law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who
believes.
COLLECT FOR THE SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY O God, who hast
prepared for them that love thee such good things as pass man's
understanding: Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we,
loving thee above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed
all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

HYMN 1: GOD OF MERCY, GOD OF GRACE Henry Francis Lyte
(1793–1847) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 179
2
Let the people praise thee, Lord; be by all that live adored;
let the nations shout and sing glory to their Saviour king; at thy
feet their tribute pay, and thy holy will obey.
3
Let the people praise thee, Lord; earth shall then her fruits
afford; God to us his blessing give, we to God devoted live: all
below, and all above, one in joy and light and love.

HYMN 2: BLEST ARE THE PURE IN HEART John Keble (1792-1866) and
William John Hall (1793-1861) Australian Hymn Book 376
2
The Lord who left the heavens our life and peace to bring, to
dwell with us in lowliness, our pattern and our King;
3
still to the lowly soul he doth himself impart, and for his
cradle and his throne chooseth the pure in heart.
4
Lord, we thy presence seek; may ours this blessing be: give us a
pure and lowly heart, a temple meet for thee.
HYMN 3: AND NOW, O FATHER, MINDFUL OF THE LOVE William Bright
(1824–1901) Hymns Ancient and Modern Revised 397ii
Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as
found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so
languid, and our faith so dim: for lo, between our sins and their
reward we set the Passion of thy Son our Lord.
-
10
And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing
Presence we appeal: O fold them closer to thy mercy’s breast, O do
thine utmost for their souls’ true weal; from tainting mischief
keep them pure and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to
persevere.
And so we come: O draw us to thy feet, most patient Saviour, who
canst love us still; and by this food, so aweful and so sweet,
deliver us from every touch of ill: in thine own service make us
glad and free, and grant us never more to part with thee.
HYMN 4: FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT’S POWER John Raphael Peacey
(1896–1971) Together in Song 411. Reproduced with permission
Now with the mind of Christ set us on fire, that unity may be
our great desire: give joy and peace; give faith to hear your call,
and readiness in each to work for all. Widen our love, good Spirit,
to embrace in your strong care all those of every race: like wind
and fire with life among us move till we are known as Christ’s, and
Christians prove.
