FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK: FATHER PAUL CAO

Religious education program

Last Saturday, our Religious Education Program at St. Mother Theodore Guerin parish started another year of learning about our Catholic faith. The parents and students gathered at St. Celestine church with a prayer service at 9:30 AM asking the Holy Spirit to come upon all of our students, parents and catechists.

Because of the Covid–19 pandemic, we aren’t using the school classrooms but will be using the back of the church, the chapel, the vestibule, the Annex, the school lunch room, and the gym for the Religious Education Program. We won’t be using the school classrooms or the office. The children will be checked in with temperature checks, there will be social distancing, masks worn, and hands will be sanitized. After class, the spaces used will be cleaned and sanitized.

Our RE classes will meet in person only once a month on Saturdays, on November 21, December 19, January 16, February 13, March 13 and April 17. Class times are 9:30–11 AM. As of now, 132 students are already enrolled in this program. We encourage the parents and children to learn together at home this year since we cannot meet as

much as we would like because of the pandemic. If you haven’t registered your children for this program, please do it as soon as possible.

Even though we are experiencing a pandemic, I am grateful that we have so many children from our parish signing up for this program. My personal thanks to the dedicated service of Ruthanne Swiakowski, Mary Morvay, the catechists and their assistants, who diligently go about making this program as successful as it is. May God bless all who are seeking to learn more about their faith.

RCIA Program

Please pray for the eight teens and eight adults who have already signed up for the RCIA program this year. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to be with them as they begin their faith journey. They will meet at St. Cyprian rectory every week and will receive their sacraments at the Easter Vigil in 2021.

October is Respect Life Month Please see the article about the Virtual Baby Bottle project on page 8 and pictures of posters on page 7 of this bulletin. You can find more resources on the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ website, respectlife.org/celebrate.

Please consider saying the rosary for life this month; as Catholics, we are called to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most

vulnerable, from the beginning of life to its end, and at every point in between. During the month of October, the Church asks us to reflect more deeply on the dignity of every human life.

Sign up for Mass

Thank you for your continued support for our parish community. Please go to our parish website stguerinparish.org or call the office to sign up for mass.

May God bless you and your family!

Be safe!

In prayer,

Fr. Paul

“We’ve discovered the pandemic was likened to a leper, and every

time we sanitize our hands or wipe clean the pews after Mass, we cleanse the leper, the COVID–

pandemic. This visible act of cleansing restores the invisible grace brought forth by God’s

merciful love for us all.”

SAINTS SIMON AND JUDE, APOSTLESOctober 28

Saint Jude, apostle and . . . Hollywood success story? Indeed! Beyond Simon’s being a “ Zealot” for Israel’s liberation and Jude’s question about Jesus revealing himself (John 14:22), no historic facts are known about either saint. But Saint Jude’s well–known patronage of lost causes and hopeless cases is largely due to a desperate vow made just before World War II by a struggling entertainer, the son of Arab–American immigrants, Danny Thomas.

Unemployed, his wife about to give birth, Danny, attending Mass, impulsively donated his last seven dollars to the collection, promising: “Saint Jude, if you

help me find my way in life, I will build a shrine in your honor!” Older Americans remember well Danny’s long, successful movie and television career. Grateful parents worldwide know the miracles that have taken place for fifty years at his Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where needy children are cared for regardless of race, religion, or financial resources, and monumental advances continue in healing and preventing pediatric cancers and catastrophic childhood diseases. A living, life-giving partnership is this “Communion of Saints:” Simon, Jude, Danny Thomas—us! Peter Scagnell

“You give that back right now!” How many of us have heard that line, probably more than once, as we were growing up? We come home with the trophy of what we thought was a really sweet deal, only to have our parents undo our profits by making us return the spoils. They had a different idea of what constituted a “fair trade agreement.”

Justice in our dealings with others continues to be an important measure of our character, and like a good parent, God cares very much about how we treat each other and about how others treat us.

God hears the cry of the poor, and answers the call of the oppressed. God’s beloved children are not to behave like bullies.

ON BEING STRANGERS IN A STRANGE LAND

©2020 By John B. Reynolds

([email protected])

Referencing today’s first reading from Exodus about social laws around the treatment of aliens

and others, an old lectionary workbook of mine says this: “The word ‘alien’ refers to people who take up residence in a land that is not their own homeland…A

number of Old Testament texts show us that the society recognized how much immigrants who were trying to make their ways in a new land needed the special care of God…” Oddly, Christmas 2019 comes

immediately to mind.

First, the actual reading from Exodus… Verbatim per the Lord, “You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt.” By couching this social law in the context of the Israelites’ own experience as foreigners in Egypt, God puts a personal element into the command. And in so doing, God emphasizes the law’s legitimacy, given the Israelites’ lived–knowledge. God’s point is well–taken, and it comes down to this: it’s tough being a stranger in a strange land.

Which brings me, as noted, to Christmas 2019. I think I’ve

mentioned in this space before that my wife and I send out a hand–made Christmas card each year. I compose the message and hand–letter it on the original artwork, then we have some copies made. Last year, I wrote about the concept of change in the lives we’re all living, and about how we’re all just passing through: We are not natives here, wherever “here” may be for you and for me / We do not remain, not even from one instant to the next / We move through

space. We move through time…

And speaking of the concept of change, and moving through space and time, how’s 2020 treating you? Talk about being a stranger in a strange land! For one thing, we had to learn a whole new language pretty much right out of the gate. We learned COVID–19. We learned flattening the curve. And sheltering–in–place. And masks (not that this is a new word, but it’s sure taken on an expanded meaning). Oh. And social distancing. Yikes! None of us saw any of this coming a year ago. But here we are, non–natives in a strange land trying to deal with it all as best we can.

To this end, Paul shows us the way, just as he shows the Thessalonians, who, by imitating the Apostle and his colleagues, prove a model for all the believers throughout the region in welcoming aliens (“from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth not only in Macedonia and in Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has gone forth”). Jesus then tells us specifically how to get along with our brothers and sisters along the way: “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Yes, we’re all strangers in a strange land. But even pre–COVID––even in the old normal––we are not natives here… Fortunately, we all have the roadmap to bring us home.

We need volunteers to assist with various aspects of our parish reopening plan. If you are high school age or older and are healthy with no underlying health conditions, please consider assisting with funerals, baptisms, weddings, reconciliation, and daily or Sunday Masses.

Funerals are held Monday through Saturday at both churches, usually at 10 AM and 11:30 AM.

Weddings are held on Saturday afternoons in both churches. Baptisms are held on Saturdays and Sundays at both churches, usually in the early afternoon.

Reconciliation takes place on Saturdays from 4 to 4:45 PM at St. Celestine.

There is an 8 AM Tuesday Mass at St. Cyprian and 8 AM Wednesday Mass at St. Celestine.

We are limited to 125 people at St. Celestine and 50 at St. Cyprian to allow for social distancing.

Volunteers are needed to greet, check off attendees, sanitize hands, manage the flow of congregants, direct people to seating, usher, clean, and sanitize the worship space. You must wear a mask at all times and practice social distancing.

All volunteers must understand that even with precautions, we cannot guarantee that you will not be exposed to Covid–19. All volunteers must attend a training.

Please submit the website Online Form to indicate your willingness and ability to volunteer, and the days of the week and times of the day that are best for you. This is a massive undertaking and many hands make light work. Find the sign up on the website.

CAN YOU VOLUNTEER? YOU MUST SIGN UP TO ATTEND MASS

The Archdiocese of Chicago requires that anyone attending Sunday Mass register in advance online. The privilege to reopen for Mass is offered with a limit to the maximum number of people who can be in the churches at one time.

We must maintain records for the Illinois Department of Public Health of all who enter our churches for contact tracing when a confirmed case of COVID–19 is identified. You may sign up for the weekend Masses and can access the link to SignUp Genius on the website and through our Facebook page.

Daily Mass, which takes place on Tuesdays at 8 AM at St. Cyprian and Wednesdays at 8 AM at St. Celestine, and Reconciliation, which takes place most Saturdays from 4 to 4:45 PM at St. Celestine (check the website first), does not require a reservation; someone will take your information at church for daily Mass.

Remember the requirement to attend Sunday Mass has been lifted and we will continue to stream the 10:30 AM Mass live on Facebook and the website.

If you are not feeling well, are over 65 or compromised medically, we encourage you to participate by watching Mass on TV or online.

We want everyone to be safe!

THANK YOU TO THE BROZ FAMILY

Thanks to Bob Broz and his famiiy for providing the new stickers that identify where people should sit in the pews. The churches look nicer with stickers instead of tape!

Bishop–elect Jeffrey Grob is planning on having a Mass of Thanksgiving at the 10:30 AM Mass on Sunday, November 15, 2020 at St. Celestine. That Mass will be open to parishioners, and everyone attending must sign up ahead of time, wear a mask, and practice social distancing. We will not be able to have a reception after for him because of the pandemic. If you would like to leave a card for him, we will have baskets in the back of the church.

Father Jeff will be ordained a bishop on Friday, Nov. 13 at 2 PM at Holy Name Cathedral. The Mass will be live–streamed and everyone is invited to watch it. We will link to it on the website.

He and his mom, Bonnie, will still reside here until the spring or summer of 2021, when they will move to Vicariate 1.

BISHOP–ELECT JEFFREY GROB

MASS OFTHANKSGIVING

PRAYER BEFORE AN ELECTION

Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community.

We ask for eyes that are free from blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty. We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender. We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom.

We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

MARRIED 50 YEARS IN 2020?

Please call the Pastoral Center or the Rectory if you were married in 1970 and are celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary this year. Even though we cannot gather together to celebrate, the Archdiocese would like to send you a certificate in recognition of this event and the 2020 and 2021 Jubilarians will be invited to celebrate together in 2021.

RESPECT LIFEVIRTUAL BABY BOTTLE PROJECT

During Respect Life month in October, our parish will be participating in The Virtual Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. Since we are not handing out baby bottles due to coronavirus concerns, if you would like to participate, please write a check to The Women’s Center. Drop it in the collection basket in the back of the churches and we will send them to this wonderful organization, which assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies.

Donations can be made on their website: GOTWC.org or call 773–794–1313 and make a donation. By God’s grace, The Women’s Centers have saved over 40,000 babies—and their mothers—from abortion since opening in 1984.
