Life’s Challenges

Modern neuroscience is revealing how we can harness the brain’s capacities of neuroplasticity to rewire our habitual patterns of response to strengthen what I call the 5 C’s of coping: 1. Calm: You can stay calm in a crisis. 2. Clarity: You can see clearly what’s happening as well as your internal response to what’s happening; you can see what needs to happen next; and you can see possibilities from different perspectives that will enhance your ability to respond flexibly. 3. We are all called upon to cope with hiccups and hurricanes in our lives – losing our wallet and car keys, discovering mold in the bathroom, missing three days at the office to care for a sick child – and we do. when before I would sail through them. The word “stop” would show up in strange places. No matter what I did to move forward, I was thwarted. I did realize I was probably being told to wait, to slow down, to think things through better. But I was in a hurry, wanted what I wanted, and chose not to believe these were the messages. I overrode them. Like the

Knight of Swords in the Rider tarot deck I charged ahead straight into the storm that was clearly blowing towards me. The situation did not work out in my favor and, in fact, even causes challenges for me today. It was a huge lesson in being patient, learning how to wait, and following inner guidance when it goes against what I think I want. Here are three tips for learning how to wait. 1. Get in touch with your breathing and consciously slow it down. Be very aware of taking slow, deep breaths. This will slow down your entire system and help to ground you into the present, where you need to be. Impatience happens when we’re living in the future of what we think we want instead of in the present where we have what is actually happening. 2. Remind yourself that good things take time. Think about how long it took planet earth to carve out the Grand Canyon and

There can be great power in choosing to wait instead of acting on some thought or project. We live in a world of instant everything. From food to reading the news to speed dating, we’ve gotten used to the idea that we can have what we want when we want it. The when is usually right now. For youngsters whose parents don’t embody wisdom, this means living without impulse control. Living without impulse control means a life of frustration because the truth is we can’t have everything we want immediately. Sometimes, we can’t have it at all. The value in learning how to wait is that it gives us time to be sure we really want what we think we want and to grow into handling whatever it is we are working towards. For instance, the woman in Florida who recently won the huge $590 million lottery waited two weeks to claim her winnings because she said she wanted to make sure she and her family were ready to handle everything that comes with winning such a large sum of money. Wise woman. I doubt she will be like some lottery winners who are broke within a few years because they didn’t take the time to make plans and went on spending sprees instead. On a smaller scale, sometimes people get very impatient when they want to change careers or jobs and the new situation doesn’t

show up right away. Frequently, the reason they have to wait is to give them time to gain the skills, expertise, or emotional maturity needed for the new position. Sometimes there are other people involved and we have to wait for them to be ready to move

on before we can have the position. For instance,

when you want to change jobs, it is likely that someone else currently holds the job you want. Until they are ready to make their move, you won’t be able to make yours. Frequently, you won’t know this and simply have to wait for right timing. On occasion,

life hands us the game of dominos and we have to wait for ours to fall. There have been

several times in my life when I was given very clear signs I needed to wait before taking action; but, I overrode my inner guidance instead of paying attention to it. During one particular period when I was about to make a huge career move, things seemed to move very slowly. Calls weren’t returned. People would keep me waiting for appointments. I sat at numerous red lights

Wait!grow the redwood forest. Think about crops that are grown for food and how long it takes from planting a seed to being able to eat an ear of corn. Get in touch with how long it has taken you to get to where you are today. None of that happened overnight. Be willing to allow life its process. 3. Give yourself some space from the current situation. When it looks like you need to wait, get away. Physically go somewhere for a day or longer and let yourself get some perspective on the situation. Sometimes a change in geography, even something as simple as going to a little cabin overnight, allows clarity to shine through. The reason for waiting might become clear and makes it much easier to be patient. Learning to be patient and to wait for life’s fruit to ripen is a skill, one well worth taking the time to learn.

My understanding of the central concept of Buddhism is that life is suffering, and that once you recognize and embrace that, you will have endless joy. Wow,talk about an easy task. Of course, this seems like utter contradiction... and how does that relate to writing? A striking example of this: Teaching a class several years ago, I gave an exercise I commonly have used: write a list of problems and “cons” in your life. The next segment is to write a list of all the good things in your life: what’s really working well. On that particular day, I was struck by the change in the group as they first focused on problems, with frowns and an almost gray cloud surrounding them. Then, on the second half of the assignment, it was like I could see the color of the air changing. The energy in the room altered. It was as though I’d entered a different room with different people in it. This experience changed my life, a defining moment, confirming directions I’d already been drawn to in my writing style and my goals with students. In the many years since that day, I’ve come across more and more affirmation of the power of intention (the decision to be positive instead of negative). However — oh yeah, it’s a big however — “being positive” is certainly easier said than done and is only half of the equation. Living authentically and writing authentically can never be done while ignoring difficult realities. Our minds and physical and emotional responses will never let us do that. So, as in life, in writing what succeeds is 1) recognize the problem; 2) allow it, permit it space to be, embrace it if you can (what is this teaching me?); 3) then let it go, which means be in a state of recognizing the issue without being owned by it. This process allows real solutions to arise. Sometimes, the only solution is witnessing. Sometimes, that’s enough. This relates back to my suggestion that simply putting the facts before readers can make a point better than telling them what those facts mean in emotional terms. Meditation has helped me put the brakes on negative self-talk. Three times, I’ve stopped doing almost anything else but meditating for a period of about a month. Part of the reason it took so long was that I was still feeling intellectually that it was important to think about problems and figure out why they’d happened and how to solve them. That practice kept returning me to the worry and negativity… even when I could clearly see that no answers

were coming from repeated thoughts about things. Quieting my worry allowed real answers and solutions to arrive as though by magic. After each of these periods, I had three of the most amazingly productive and changing times in my life; being drawn to new career directions, new relationships, and new ways of being in the world and in my body. I was operating on intuition and training at those times. I now have some better intellectual understanding and ability to articulate it to readers and students. 1. Any feeling that is embraced is made more comfortable by that process. I’m including fear, grief, anger, pain (physical and emotional), bliss, and joy, which can become too intense also. Getting stuck in any feeling place is uncomfortable because it ignores the reality of change. 2. Embracing situations of good or bad luck is essential too, whether it’s illness, legal problems, or any other kind of loss or contention. 3. Embracing allows feelings and situations to change. Again, let’s bring that into a writing scenario. The motivation to write is fueled by a desire to see some kind of change, in the self or in others. Change takes the form of altered ideas or behaviors. The change may be temporary, like the desire to entertain an audience. The change we seek may be more permanent, like the desire to inform readers/listeners. Those are the two things a writer can do: entertain or inform. Writing can inspire when the information ignites a desire to change. Any genre or project can be inspiring. Whether a writer is inspiring pessimism or optimism, hope or despair, is left to the author. Unfortunately, that choice is sometimes made without awareness. A big difference between people who can inspire positive solutions and those who only recycle stuckness is the ability to have some distance from the dilemma. Writers who are down in the pit of despair themselves can’t have much perspective on a problem, can’t help others out of a hole they are still in. In my writing, I usually am able to get distance on issues once I’ve solved or begun to solve them myself. With age, I’ve faced and answered more questions. Some steps writers can use to create pieces that inspire hope: 1. Recognize and concisely define the issue/problem/conflict/need. Don’t get too caught in reasons and how things happen as that leads to cyclic rehashing and worrying. 2. Demonstrate ways the issue can be allowed. Letting it “be” without attempting to alter it, at least briefly for the purpose of

What is more intimate than your voice? Words truly have power, but in the final analysis, it isn’t so much what you say but how you say it – the quality of your voice – that strikes harmony or discord within a listener. When we speak, our intention is to communicate thoughts and feelings, but our sound is filtered through our bodies, which carries many tensions, negative beliefs, and repressed emotions of which we are unaware, and all these things shape the quality of our voice. The whole body is the resonator as our vocalized sound moves through it, not unlike how the sound of a piano amplifies as it bounces around inside its body. The way we manage our breath while speaking also influences the sound of our voice. If we are shallow breathers, our voices may be breathy or lacking in vitality. If we have good diaphragm control and deep lung capacity, there will be

For instance, a boy might be taught that a man should have a deep, commanding voice and tries to stuff his voice down into his chest. The sound may be deep, but the push downward is restricting and may cause him to lose flexibility or resonance in his voice. The voice could have a hard edge or perhaps sound a little monotone, depending on how he does it. Pushing the voice down can be hard on the vocal cords. Many people believe that the sound and quality of a voice cannot be changed, but there is nothing farther from the truth. Anyone can change the sound and quality of their voice with a little training. Your voice – your sound quality – developed along with your personality. You have habits of speaking then, and habits can be replaced with new habits. Working on one’s voice is a rewarding way to release emotional tension from the body and gain more power in one’s ability to intimately communicate with others. If you want to change the quality of your voice, here are some good tips to begin your journey. 1. Learn to breathe naturally and deeply with good diaphragm support with a relaxed open throat and jaw. It’s easiest to accomplish this lying down.

If you don’t know where your diaphragm is, it is the muscle that flutters when you cough. Learn to feel your diaphragm when you breathe. As a practice, let your air out completely and wait for your body to desire a deep breath, and then let it in. 2. Where are you in your body? What are you conscious of right now? Your head? Your hands? Your feet? If you are only in your head, then this will be where your sound will resonate the most. Practice coming into your body by becoming aware of your various body parts during the day. Check in with yourself. If you aren’t fully in your body, you will have some tension somewhere keeping you out of your body. Consciously relax and let go and let gravity help you settle into what is rightfully yours, your body. 3. Where do you habitually hold tension? Become aware of these places and work at releasing the tension. Breathe into those places. Put your attention there. Love those places. Let them feel your presence. Pretend you have microscopic people massaging and breaking up the tension. When you speak, become aware

more strength and aliveness in the voice. The quality of our voices is also determined by how we inhabit our bodies and where we hold our tension as well as our beliefs about who we are. If we believe through experience that we have to project ourselves to be heard, we will have a different quality than if we believe being quiet is a virtue. Our voices reveal our feelings of love or fear, helping us hide and evade or extend and connect. Many people restrict their throats and self-expression through the many negative messages we receive in childhood. It is through constricting the throat that we hold back and manage our natural impulses to speak our truth. Some people mumble their words or speak from the back of the throat, making it more difficult to hear them. This is often a person’s way of hiding fear or anxiety even from themselves. Others speak with a high-pitched or nasal tone, irritating to listen to. Often this sound is created from squeezing the throat or jaw muscles in an anxious effort to be heard, for any number of reasons. Sometimes we identify with our voices being a certain way that fits with who we want to be, which can actually inhibit the flow of our sound.

“The activations have transformed my life.”—B.G., Redmond, WA

“A bodily disease, which we look upon as whole and entire within itself, may, after all, be but a symptom of some ailment in the spiritual part.” —Nathaniel Hawthorne

You’ve probably heard of eating for your blood type or your body type. There are so many different ways to eat contained in the plethora of bestselling diet books that are overflowing on shelves. But, how does one make sense of it all? Or, to put it simply, how do you really know how to eat? In all my years as a nutritionist, I believe the key is to figure out how to eat for you. Eating is personal. Not every food is for every body at all times. It is refreshing to see that personalized nutrition, or matching our genes to our food choices, is now at the frontier of western medicine. As an adjunct to the genes which map closely to our physical body, I propose that we need to eat for our subtle body and all the parts of us we don’t see outright, but have their energetic imprint in our physical manifestations. Our subtle energy is constantly sculpting in every moment which calls into question the validity of following a plain, prescriptive diet for a lifetime. If we are a dynamic being,

shouldn’t our eating be as fluid and flexible? Subtle energy moves faster than matter and sets the template of the physical body. What if we were to consciously redefine our physical body by assessing our subtle energy needs? One of the ways we might venture to do this is through one of our internal subtle energy gauges, our chakras, or the portals in our being that align to the seven major endocrine glands. “Chakra” is an ancient Sanskrit term that means “wheel.” Essentially, these gateways are moving spirals of energy exchange. But they are more than that literal meaning; they can also be interpreted symbolically, aligning to the seven aspects of the self: •Theroot chakra, which is associated with the adrenal glands, corresponds to instinct and survival; •Thesacral chakra (ovaries and testes) to emotions and creativity; •Thesolar plexus chakra (pancreas) to empowerment and transformation; •Theheart chakra (heart and thymus) to love and gratitude; •Thethroat chakra (thyroid) to truth and authenticity; •Thethird eye chakra (pituitary) to wisdom and intuition;

•Thecrown chakra (pineal gland) to interconnection and spirituality. If chakras are associated with a spectrum of

vibration, from the denser

vibration of the body to the finer vibration of the spirit, it would seem that the

frequency carried by individual foods could impact our energy. We might find that we need multiple different vibrations to balance the various parts of us, perhaps we need some grounding in the root, some expansion in the heart, and a bit of opening in our sense of connection with others and divinity. Might food be able to help us? Could heavy protein help us to ground and feel more present? What about leafy green vegetables assisting us in unfolding our heart and circulation? And could intentional eating help us to see the mystery of life on every plate? In my background as a scientist as much as I am a spiritual truth-seeker, I have seen the two seemingly disparate worlds of subtle and physical energy merge beautifully within the chakra system. You don’t have to use the “c” word (for “chakras”) to understand; you only have to recognize that foods have their unique energetic signature that can enhance, deplete, or neutralize our own energy. And, maybe they can enhance one day, one hour, and radically deplete the next. This is, in essence, quantum physics applied to the nature of food and our bodies. Perhaps the world of diets hasn’t been as successful in the long-term because

they are only touting the physical nature of our bodies rather than the completeness of our being, including the realm of our subtle selves. If we can tap into our energy, determine our chakra type, and assess whether we need balancing, we may begin to tailor the energy of food to what our subtle body requires for vibrancy. All this talk about chakras and food may pique your interest because it is a different way to relate to food and requires another level of engagement and awareness with your body, mind, and spirit. In my book, Chakra Foods for Optimum Health, I provide a questionnaire that will jumpstart you into assessing what your chakra needs may be: are you missing a sense of rootedness from the root chakra, too much emotion swirling in your sacral chakra, or a blazing fire of burn-out in your solar plexus chakra? After you have your chakra deficiency and sufficiency areas, I talk about the food prescriptions for the chakras, and if you need supplements to food to balance your energy, I cover this topic in my follow-up book, Quantum Supplements. Nourishing blessings to you.

Deanna is giving a food and chakra workshop series starting in September, meeting once monthly to cover a chakra area, teaching what you can do with food and eating to help restore balance in that area. There is an introductory talk on Food & Chakras: Eat the Energy You Want to Become at East West Bookshop on Friday, July 26, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. You can call (206)523-3726 to register. Spiritual experiences help me see the connection between my inner life, which includes dreams, and my outer physical life. I realize there is a deeper side to things, and these experiences help me answer the most fundamental questions, especially about my life’s purpose. Here is a personal experience showing the interweaving of these two levels of awareness. In a dream, I was headed to a service where I was to speak. I talked briefly with

the organizers and asked how much time I had. They said I could talk through the whole service. I wondered how I was going to fill this time with so little to say. I was unprepared to speak so I surrendered to the spirit, hoping the words would come. The meeting began with a spiritual exercise, chanting the word HU. Somewhere in between the chant and silence I began to speak. I shared the story of an experience I had in my outer life recently. “I was on my afternoon walk passing the front window of Goodwill and noticed a picture of a sailboat sitting on the window sill. It was an old sailboat, with many sails. The wind filled every one of them as it glided over turbulent waters. This image caused my heart to expand as if I recognized a profound truth that set my heart free. It was a truly extraordinary moment that literally sent my heart reeling. I stood there stunned. “When I started to re-gather the pieces blown apart during this revelation, I realized the little box that captured my heart was now shattered. A new freedom is uncomfortable at first, and I scrambled to put together my comfortable shelter again. But the pieces would not fit anymore. I had changed in the process. “I went into the store to examine the painting more closely. Nothing extraordinary, I thought. But the experience remained and I needed to know what happened. I wanted to fully realize this wisdom of the heart. “I took this experience into contemplation and began to understand that

this was soul using every opportunity to catch the wind and propel itself forward. The sails of soul catch the wind of spirit, as soul glides over the disturbed waters taking every advantage to be free. No need to fight the ride... just enjoy. “A couple of weeks later, I again walked by Goodwill and there was a different sailboat picture. This was a photograph instead of a painting. I looked it over. It was beautiful, but the impact was not the same as the first. For weeks, I had been thinking about the original painting and whether I might see it again. The second sailboat picture surprised me. I knew there was a lesson for me here and wondered what that lesson might be. “In contemplation, I realized it was the love of the painter for the wind-filled sails that allowed me to have this experience. This ever-present love connected directly to my heart.” When I finished the story in the dream, the clock radio next to my bed sounded off and awakened me. I was amazed at the timing of it all. It reminded me of the famous quote from Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi from his butterfly dream where he stated, “Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man.” I was a little confused whether I was the person having the Goodwill experience or the person sharing the story in the dream. Maybe I am both and the veil that separates the two realities is my own

Spiritual Experiences in Daily Living beliefs and self-limitations. From this experience, I began to understand that none of us live life alone. We all work within these different states of consciousness connected as a part of the whole. Within this “soul” state, all is accessible in the here and now. Serving each other in the process, either knowingly or unknowingly, causes it all to work. I am beginning to realize, love is at the heart of all life experience. Doing the smallest task, with love, can have profound impacts. Here is an exercise you can try before falling asleep at night to help realize the importance of dreams. Think of a question you want an answer to. An example is, “Are dreams real?” Then ask for a dream experience to help you realize this. One may ask God, a spiritual teacher such as Jesus or Buddha, Spirit, whomever you feel comfortable with. Assume the experience will happen and you will remember the experience. Say, “I dream, I remember, I write” a few times. Keep a pen and paper handy to write down your dream upon awakening. Do the exercise for a week and review your dreams. See if there is any connection between your question and the dreams you record. Light contemplation rather than heavy analysis works best. Happy travels.

That evocation also activates the prefrontal cortex, which triggers the hippo-campus to search for explicit memories of moments when we have been held, soothed, protected, encouraged, believed in, times when we have reached out for help and received comfort and support. In the 1960s when America decided to go to the moon, it was soon learned that accomplishing that feat would require more than just building a more powerful airplane. It required an altogether new aerospace vehicle, namely a rocket. Similarly, with cancer we need to go beyond simply eliminating tumor symptoms and instead direct our attention to eliminating the underlying causes. In that regard, certain diet and lifestyle changes can prevent the process of cancer from getting a free ride to do its dirty work of producing tumors. Consider that cancer is a process; a process that’s driven by factors within the body including: 1. high acidic pH,

2. deficiencies in oxygen and digestive enzymes, and 3. a weak immune system. A Nobel Prize-winning scientist of the early 1950s proved that cancer, any cancer, can thrive where there is a deficiency of oxygen in the body. Unfortunately, the way we commonly nourish our body contributes to the cause of oxygen deficiency. Most of us are shallow breathers, we eat mainly cooked foods that are devoid of oxygen, and we do not drink enough water. These are only a few ways that we deny our body adequate oxygen. We would do well not to “fight cancer,” because by fighting cancer we are engaging it; and engaging cancer automatically gives it a degree of power. What is far better is that we commit to enhancing our body’s healing power. Let us make a point to change the environment within our body to one that supports health and not cancer.

on. Anything that does not honor or serve the good of all will experience blockages, resistance, and upsets. Any structure that goes against the collective soul of humanity will be purged and transformed. On a personal level, there will be a purging of our deep psyches, revealing unconscious beliefs that have been blocking the awareness of our divinity. A belief is a persistent thought that you keep repeating again and again, until it becomes your reality.

“Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at will change.” --Ghandi.

This is the way of mastery. We must re-think our habitual ways of being and move beyond “the box.”

“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” --T.S. Eliot

It is imperative that we take an honest look at our lives, and ask ourselves these questions: •“Whathabitsorbeliefsdo I hold that are keeping me from expressing my

unique potential? •DoIsuppressmyintuition and creativity by seeking approval or acceptance from others? •AmIfollowingmyownheart, my own inner truth?” Insights about the metaphysics of the universe

are being revealed to those who have eyes to see and ears to hear. The truth about our relationship with the divine will become more evident through enlightened teachings and personal experiences. We will discover a deeper knowing about who we are, and what we truly want. As we deepen our personal relationship with the divine, our attachments to dogma will fall away. We will realize that God/Source is within each of us; that we are the one that we have been waiting for; that there is nothing to fear; and that heaven is a state of being, not a place. This Uranus Square Pluto cycle is especially strong now through 2014. It will continue to influence each of us in profound ways. For insights about how and where Uranus and Pluto are affecting you most directly, look at the houses where 9-11 degrees of Aries and Capricorn are, and any planets in your chart that are 8-12 degrees, in any sign. These are keys to understanding your personal transformational process and soul’s evolution. Remember: What we are is God’s gift to us; what we become is our gift to God.

In astrology, the Uranus Square Pluto aspect is the primary energy that represents the profound, radical upsets happening in our world today. This profound alignment is at its peak intensity now through November 2013.Uranus and Pluto always act to serve the evolution of consciousness. We are in a time of personal and collective mastery. Humanity entered this powerful transformative cycle, Uranus Square Pluto, in June 2009, and it will continue to be in effect through March 2018. This represents a profound and powerful acceleration of consciousness and changes in collective beliefs. Uranus is the planet of radical and unexpected change. It liberates us to be our authentic selves. Uranus brings inspiration and awakens us to our inner truth. It is in the sign of Aries, which is summoning us to realize and express our individuality for the higher good of all. Pluto is the planet that purges and transforms all that is unlike the divine. It is in the sign of Capricorn, which rules structure, authority, commitments and principles. Pluto is directing us to align our physical world with our highest principles. As Uranus and Pluto interact with each other, in this square aspect, their energies are purging and transforming our world. They are catalyzing radical transformations of our collective beliefs. It’s time to deeply examine the principles by which we have made commitments and have constructed our world. This includes governments, educational facilities, medical facilities, religious organizations, corporations and so

of any tension in your tongue, jaw, neck, shoulders, or throat. These are the places that will affect the quality of your tone the most. Try to relax these places. 4. Don’t project your voice out to others. This only tightens your muscles and restricts the voice. Let your voice resonate in your body. This is what opera singers do. That’s why they don’t need microphones. Retreat within yourself. Relax. Resonate. Let vocal volume radiate from you instead of pushing it out. Enjoy talking while in your body. Release the effort or fight. Most people can improve the warmth and quality of their speaking voice if they simply begin to pay attention to their emotional tension as they speak. It isn’t easy to change

any habit, so be patient. It will take time and effort, but what you will discover in the process of becoming more aware of your body and letting go of emotional tensions is your authentic self – the person you want to be – the person in you who wants nothing more than to express your deep and undying love and to be known and seen for who you are. You are your instrument for the expression of your soul, and we all know, that in the end, the soul must sing.

SHIFT HAPPENS!

By Teresa Morrow

“Questioning yourself can be good until the questions turn into doubt, silencing your inner guidance.” —Teresa Morrow

Decisions, decisions! From the time we are born we are confronted with decisions. And there are times in our lives when we question our own beliefs, thoughts, or actions. Doubt sets in our mind and scrambles our mindset to bring about confusion and frustration. You can tackle doubt if you investigate the why behind the doubt, rehearse daily affirmations, find support and create quiet spiritual time.

1. Investigate the Why When you doubt yourself, it’s the perfect time to investigate the reason (the why) behind the doubt. As you explore the reasoning behind the doubt, most of the time one of two things emerges. First, the doubt comes from your ego trying to convince you to walk away from what you want. Ego is notorious for overwhelming you with fear which results in doubt in a decision. The second can be inner guidance or voice trying to tell you something and you aren’t ready to listen. By going inside with prayer or meditation, the messy noise of the doubt tends to go away and you are more able to receive what your inner voice is trying to share with you. 2. Rehearse Daily Affirmations When you doubt yourself, your thoughts, or your actions, you are listening to the negative talk of

others or even of yourself. By devoting to rehearsing positive affirmations about you and the world around you, it will bring you back to a positive place in your thoughts by reminding you of your accomplishments instead of focusing on noise or negativity. 3. Find Support When doubt begins to interfere in our decision-making process, sometimes reflecting our thoughts with someone else can help filter out the nonsense of what our ego is telling us or where our fear is coming from inside us. Seek out people, books, and articles that lift you up and support you in your efforts to navigate past the doubt. Questions of doubt can only exist and be present in your reality if you want doubt to be your reality. No one can make you question yourself. You do that all on your own. 4. Quiet Spiritual Time Whether you pray,

meditate, or both, creating time in your schedule for your spiritual routine will provide a new perspective on your thoughts. No matter who you worship or look to for guidance – spirit, God, universe, divine power, etc. – by taking the time to go into the sacred space of communication of silence often times brings about peace and resolve to unanswered questions. The answers you seek from the

Four Ways to Tackle Doubt doubt are already within you. You just need to trust your intuition and inner guidance to find the right choice for the decision of what to say or do. Once you find the answer, don’t keep questioning the answer. Going into a mindset of doubt can fuel itself into worry and fear. Doubt can cripple your actions and thoughts. It can prevent you from moving toward your goals and dreams, making you believe you aren’t good enough or don’t deserve those things aligned with your divine purpose on this earth. By finding the reason

behind the doubt, rehearsing daily affirmations, relying on support and creating spiritual quiet time, you will be releasing doubt in no time.

sometimes we let change itself get in the way of our progress toward a more blissful (spiritual) life experience. This happens because we work harder to change others than to examine ourselves and those aspects of ourselves in need of positive change. So long as we focus on what’s wrong with others, we will never be able to truly see our own need to change. Underneath, in your heart, you might know there’s work to do, but to take it on feels overwhelming. Understandably so. Two exercises that can help you gain clarity on what’s in the way of your spiritual growth are the MBS Scan and the AAA Plan.

Mind-Body-Spirit (MBS) Scan The MBS Scan helps identify behaviors and thought patterns that bind you to the physical world and thereby limit your spiritual growth. This is a self-awareness exercise and not for judging yourself or others. It is meant to give you tools that help develop you as a spiritual being. Mind: Am I accepting others as they are, or do I want them to change? Who? Why? Am I letting the opinions of others influence how I feel about myself? Do I have a habit of seeking praise from others? Do I easily react to the behaviors of others? The desire to change another often happens because they are not giving you the feedback you desire or expect in order to feel a certain way (loved or valued, for example). The unwillingness to accept

people as they are keeps you firmly planted in a physical state of living and limits your ability to evolve spiritually. Seeing yourself as a spiritual being, on the other hand, allows you to see the other as spirit (because all of us are from the greater whole). When you see each person as part of the whole, expectations are released and healing begins. Body: Do I consider my body

the most important expression of who I am? Does my outward (physical) expression mirror how I feel inside? Do I see my body as a servant to my soul? What does that mean? Do I tend to my body with loving care and respect? Or do I abuse my body? The body is a vehicle for the soul. Being a complex vehicle, the body needs tending to in order to stay out of the way of your soul’s growth. The healthier we can keep the body, the more energy we can put into spiritual development without the distraction of tending to a body suffering the consequences of neglect. Spirit: In what ways do I tap into the knowledge of my wiser, higher, soul-self when faced with a difficult person or situation? Do I enroll my soul? How? Or do I only draw on intellect to work through the battle? How are the results different in each approach? When guided by your soul, your energy is in flow as you radiate a calm inner peace in the midst of challenge. Unmoved by the actions of others, you remain centered and at ease. Write a page or two about what came up for you during the MBS Scan.

Awareness-Action-Affirmation (AAA) Plan

The AAA is like a three-step action plan, as it organizes the MBS Scan results in a way to help you set goals and measure progress. Awareness: Review the results of your MBS Scan. Circle words that show where you’ve enrolled your soul for guidance and underline words that show where you’ve tried working through a situation without calling on your higher power. How did each scenario play out? Action: Is there a specific awareness that surfaced about how much you live from a physical mindset as opposed to a spiritual one? What one action can you take to move

you toward connecting with your soul as you tend to everyday life? Affirmation: With the awareness that enrolling your soul, as a matter of habit, brings soul-utions to problems more quickly, write an affirmation that helps you stay connected to this soul awareness. Let’s try it: •Awareness:Irealizemyaddictiontoneeding feedback from ______ in order to feel valued comes from a physical state of being. If I lived from a more spiritual place, I might not care so much about what ________ says or doesn’t say. •Action:Iwillworktobecomemoreself-aware and spiritually aligned as I merge with the greater whole of life in a detached, yet connected point of view, a soul view. •Affirmation:“Iliveinperfectunisonwith my soul as I lovingly radiate my unique essence in human form.”

Finding Spiritual Maturity by Enrolling the Soul

The spiritually mature person understands the value of enrolling their soul’s wisdom to navigate life’s challenges. They understand that others are doing the best they can with what they have and don’t take the actions of others personally. Instead, the spiritually mature person holds a healthy sense of detachment from human emotions and experiences. Detachment doesn’t mean to become deadened to feelings. Just the opposite. When we slip into the stillness of our soul’s energy, we see situations with clarity. We see suffering and feel compassion. We see confusion and feel understanding. The spiritually mature person remains centered as they exude a sense of grace in the midst of chaos because in the turmoil they see opportunity for further growth. “The path of spiritual growth is a path of lifelong learning.” --M. Scott Peck

The crown chakra, the seventh major energy center, governs our spiritual health. The degree to which energy flows (or doesn’t flow) through the crown chakra is a reflection of your spiritual maturity. In a spiritually mature state, you understand that you are both interdependent (meaning you are part of a greater whole), yet independent (meaning you are an individual soul within that greater whole). With this understanding, you operate from a point of detached involvement as you blissfully go through life. One of the main reasons we limit our spiritual growth is by not accepting people and situations in the greater whole as they are, or wanting them to change. Change is an essential part of spiritual growth, but

The answer to that question in this case is most probably yes! I’m talking about a now very common cat disease, feline hyperthyroidism, and its suspected cause. Backing up just a bit, I began working for veterinarians in 1965. I went from part time to fulltime and as time went by, earned my degree in veterinary technology. Working in vet hospitals was my fulltime career until the mid 1980s, and I worked for the most respected and state-of-the-art practices. During that time, I never even heard of this disease. That is because it was only first described as a “spontaneous” disease in 1979. Within the next decade it became recognized as the most common endocrine disorder of cats. Now, according to a leading veterinary expert on the subject, Dr. Dennis Wacherbarth, founder of the Feline Hyperthyroid Treatment Center in Shoreline, Wash., possibly 10% of our domestic cat friends will develop this disease in their lifetimes. I phrased it that way because this disease is rarely seen in a cat less than seven years of age. It is thought of as an older cat’s disease. Hmmm, might that indicate that these cats may be being exposed to something in their home environments that is causing them to develop this disorder? Sure. It’s not only possible it is pretty much certain. That is a thought that has crossed my mind more than once over the years. Why did our cats never have it before the late ’70s? Why did it become more and more common? Apparently, scientists have been wondering the same thing. They started looking at where indoor cats spend their time, especially on furniture and the

floor. Now, a groundbreaking government study has found “significant association” between this cat disease and certain flame-retardants. These chemicals are added to all kinds of household items like carpet padding, foam, chords, electronics, mattresses and kid’s clothes, just to name a few. At the same time, flame-retardants became heavily used, our domestic cats began dying of thyroid disease.

That brings me back to the canary question. If these chemicals are doing this to our beloved cats, what are they doing to us? I don’t think anyone really knows the exact answer to that question yet. We do know that these chemicals can now be found everywhere in nature, wildlife, and most certainly in people. Are you willing to let the use of them continue until we know for sure if they are killing us, too? The good news is that some lawmakers, here in our state of Washington and around the country are fighting to extend existing bans and to prevent chemical companies from just switching to newer or different versions after a ban is put into effect. The chemical and business lobbyists argue that it is too expensive and burdensome to ban more versions of retardants. The good news again is that some other states have already done this. If you care about this issue, it is very important that you pay attention to what is going on with current legislation in your area and make your opinion known when appropriate and timely. Other than offering this encouragement to you, there is not a lot more I can personally do about this issue at the moment. But, I can give you more information about your cat friends and this disease.

with one of my cats. First of all, as much as I love and trust my regular vet, I would run — not walk — to the specialist in my area, Dr. Dennis or most likely his associate Dr. Faith Vaughn. They have treatment centers in Shoreline and Tacoma. For those of you out of this area, you can do an online search for specialists or vet schools in your area. Knowing what I do now, I would not even consider doing the surgery or using the iodine deficient diets available. The oral drug treatment might sound preferable to the more complicated and scary-

sounding radioactive iodine treatment but I have learned just the opposite. The drug treatment is relatively costly, continues forever, and requires regular exams and follow-up blood tests. It also may not be tolerated well in some cases, causing unpleasant side-effects. Unless there was a very good reason why my cat should not get the radioactive iodine treatment, that is the option I would choose. When understood, the radioactive iodine treatment really isn’t scary at all. It is less

The question I am asked most is what are the signs of hyperthyroidism in cats? There are many, which can exist separately or together. The most common signs are hyperactivity, weight loss, and increased appetite. Other signs include: increased water intake and increased urination, vomiting and/or diarrhea, weakness, breathing difficulties, heart disease, and crying or yowling at night. The disease is diagnosed by running T3 and T4 blood tests. There are a few different treatments available including giving an anti-thyroid drug, Methimazole (Tapazole), iodine deficient diets, surgically removing the thyroid, and radioactive iodine treatment. Up until very recently I was not up-to-date about these different forms of treatment and how much they have progressed and improved over the years. After being educated and updated by Dr. Wacherbarth, I am actually surprised at how my opinion has changed regarding what I would do if this disease ever occurs

complicated than in the past and once it is done, you are done. It actually stops the disease, while the oral medication only masks symptoms and the disease progresses underlying that. The amount of time the cat must remain in confinement after the radioactive treatment depends on how much of it they need. So, if you choose the drug option and later decide to do the radioactive choice, your cat will most likely need more and have to stay longer. If cost is a factor for you, in the long run, the radioactive treatment is much less expensive. I also want to say in years past I have heard of very old cats with this disease that were taken to a vet that practiced Chinese medicine. They were successfully treated with herbs and diet. Lastly, I think the age and general health of the cat is a major consideration as to whether to treat and with what. Asking the cat what they would like to do is required as far as I am concerned, and there are so many gifted animal

Are Cats Our Canaries?Continued from Page 13

The Egoscue Method uses gentle stretches and exercises to strengthen, stretch, and relax our muscles. When the muscles of your body are balanced according to its design, your body becomes fully functional and chronic pain disappears. Your body becomes dysfunctional when muscles lose balance. Muscles are like the ropes of sailing ships. Proper tension on the ropes are needed to keep the sails functional. Tighten or loosen the ropes that

hold the sails beyond its design and the ship will begin to lose its ability to function and may even go in circles. In order to get the boat sailing smoothly and efficiently, we have to return the ropes back to their proper tension. If they remain unbalanced the chances of damage to the sails and ship increases. Egoscue can be helpful for people with TMJ, headaches, neck, back, knee, shoulder pain, sciatica, herniated discs, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, fibromyalgia, arthritis, tendinitis, and many

other types of joint pain. Here is an exercise, called “static back,” that is especially helpful for back pain and is easy to do. Lie on your back with both legs bent at 90 degrees, resting on a block, bench, or chair. The legs should be shoulder width apart. Rest your hands on the floor a little below shoulder level with palms facing up. Relax the diaphram muscles and let them raise and lower with the breath. Hold this position for a minimum of five minutes. It can be held longer, though, and is even nice to take a long nap while in this position. This exercise uses gravity to flatten the back muscles and allow the upper back to relax

into extension. If you would like to learn more about this work, the book is Pain Free by Pete Egoscue.

Tadhg Hennessy is a licensed massage practitioner working on expanding his training to include the Egoscue method to help people get relief from chronic pain of various types. He is looking for those who would like to help him raise money for this training, in the exchange for future sessions once he is certified. He can be reached at (425) 387-3279.

about being on the spiritual path and being involved in psychotherapy in order to heal childhood wounds. The beauty of this film is that Lesko asks the questions the viewers are most likely thinking and the teachers speak for themselves. Most fascinating is they don’t all give the same answer. It is revealing to hear their responses and then take this information inside and see how it applies to your own life. And the final question asked of the viewer is: What would Buddha teach about all of this today? Watch the film and see what you think the answer might be. Purchase the DVD or rent

Ayahuasca: Welcome to the WorkMusic Album by Ben LeeTen Fingers Records Ayahuasca is a vine brewed into a tea and it has been consumed for thousands of years by indigenous South Americans as a spiritual ritual. This album is the artist’s way of expressing what happened for him as he undertook this journey of self-awakening and healing. As he says on the cover, trying to capture such an experience is “ultimately a failure.” The album carries the sense of transcendence one associates with spiritual experiences and, therefore,

Known as the “Guitarist’s Guitarist,” Gerhard has played since the age of 14 and knew from that tender age that this is his life’s work. Mesmerizing, calming, and sometimes even mystifying, There and Gone is an album to put on your replay loop.

Imperfect SpiritualityExtraordinary Enlightenment for Ordinary PeopleBy Polly CampbellViva Editions

Are you tired of trying to be perfect? Are you tired of beating yourself up because you don’t reach some standard of behavior you think you should? Perhaps you’re ready for the path of imperfect spirituality. Written with humor as well as solid mind-body scientific data, this book teaches how to embrace who you are, as you are, right here and now. Campbell writes, “We invest time and put our attention on fixing, changing, avoiding, denying, and hiding our imperfections to match some contrived cultural expectation, rather than living from what’s right and true for us. Let’s do it differently. It’s time to shift our focus and energy from what’s wrong with us to what is right within us.” This is a wonderful book that can offer support in growing personally and spiritually in a way that works for you.

have so much fun making these items that all your gifts will be special one-of-a-kind homemade ones. Everyday OraclesDecoding the Divine Messages that Are All Around UsBy Ann Bolinger-McQuadeJeremy P. Tarcher/Penguin

“Personal oracles add a rich layer of meaning to a world that can seem lonely and devoid of magic or dialogue with the divine,” explains the author. Perhaps you have seen clouds in a particular shape that held personal meaning for you or saw a sign on a billboard that gave you a message. Everyday Oracles teaches how to recognize and decipher these messages that surround us. The book teaches about the five main types of oracles: conduits, mirrors, synchronicities, signs and symbols, and invisible moving sidewalks. We also learn how our mind can block these messages and she gives tips and ideas for how to work with our oracles better. There are many wonderful stories that illustrate these teachings that make the book fun and fascinating to read.

The Secret Language of DogsStories from a Dog PsychicBy Jocelyn KesslerHampton Roads

Learn how this psychic works with dogs and their people as well as read tips and ideas to learn how to communicate with your dog. More than this, the book explains that particular dogs, and other animals, come into our lives for very specific reasons. The dog will help us heal our issues while we assist them in whatever issues they might have. I love how Kessler treats dogs like the sentient beings they are and recognizes and honors what they can do for we

humans. This is a challenging book to read in some ways because of some of the stories she tells. But overall it is a very light-filled book that can help you deepen your relationship with your dog and other creatures in the world.

Goddesses and Sirens andGods and TitansTwo oracle decks by Stacey DemarcoIllustrations by Jimmy MantonBeyond Words

These two decks can help you dive deeper into the world of goddesses and gods. The Goddess deck has 40 cards with guidebook and the Gods deck has 38 cards with guidebook. Learn more about these powerful entities, with guidance, spells, incantations, and inspiration you can apply to daily living. Everyone has male and female energies within them and working with these two decks could be a wonderful way to balance these within one’s self. Additionally, you can learn about different traditions as well as drawing upon these archetypes to help with life situations. The two decks can be worked with separately or they can be combined for even greater insight and understanding. It took a lot of research and practice to design and organize these two decks and the results are very powerful as well as fun and enlightening. Get both of them and have the gods and goddesses working with you!

Angel Heart SigilsMystical Symbols from the Angels of AtlantisBy Stewart PearceIllustrated by Richard CrookesFindhorn Press

This is a companion deck to the Angels of Atlantis Cards by the same author. “Sigils have been used as symbols or pictographs since time immemorial,” says the author, and “show the essence of a subject without totally revealing its vibration.” This deck offers 44 cards that show the aspects of 12 angelic orbs. The guidebook explains the meanings of the card and offers ways to apply this to one’s life. Any sort of question can

be asked and the cards can be used for meditational focus in order to derive further meanings and energy from them. The images are complex while also being beautiful. Working with them on a regular basis would, I am sure, reveal much.

The Joyous CosmologyAdventures in the Chemistry of ConsciousnessBy Alan WattsNew World Library

Originally published in 1962, this is a new second edition of one of the earliest books that looked at the use of psychedelics in terms of spiritual experience. There is an interesting forward written by Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (Ram Dass) when both of them were still working as professors at Harvard. Although I don’t personally value the use of psychedelics on the spiritual path, this is an interesting book to read from a historical perspective and also to gain insight into this path followed by others.

Tears of the BuddhaSpirituality and EmotionsA Film by Joel Lesko

Just about everyone who walks the spiritual path has had to come to terms with the issue of reconciling their spirituality with their emotions. What are emotions? Are they good or bad? Can a person experience strong emotions such as anger and hatred and still reach transcendence? Lesko, a long-time meditator and film maker, shares his own experiences and interviews Gangaji, Eli-Jaxon-Bear, Jeff Foster, Daniel Barron, Mukti, John de Ruiter, Pamela Wilson, Peter Fenner, Rupert Spira, Judith Blackstone, Jon Bernie and Karl Renz to find out what they think. Some say emotions “are not trustworthy” while others say they are “only energy.” Another says we “are made of emotions; they are the literal core essence of our being.” Lesko asks: is it okay to experience strong emotions, where do our emotions come from, and what about our personal story, should we give it up? And the big question is asked: what

By Dan Keusal, M.S., LMFT

For several years in a row while I was a young boy, my family took summer vacations on the Delaware shore. I remember my first glimpse of the ocean, the way I felt both drawn to it and a little frightened by it. As my father and siblings and I ventured out into the waves, we would try to jump over them, to rise up above them, sometimes succeeding, sometimes getting knocked down and rolled around in the undertow. I remember the first time I saw a stranger do something different as a particularly large and threatening wave approached: they dove down into it. At first this seemed counter-intuitive, even a little crazy, but then I tried it myself. Yes, I had to hold my breath long enough for the wave to pass above me, and there was the fear that I would not be able to find air when I tried to come up again. But I discovered that while these waves

were often tumultuous on the surface, they were calmer and more readily navigated when I made the effort to go deeper, to go into them and through them rather than over them. Many people come to me for psychotherapy because they’ve been knocked down trying to jump over some of the bigger “waves” in their life, and they’ve come away with some painful scrapes and bruises. They see the next waves forming on the horizon, and they are frightened. They want to know how to jump even higher, hoping they can rise above whatever is coming their way. Sometimes, that’s all they need: a little support and encouragement in rising above the waves where that approach is enough. But most of the time, our work involves helping them learn to stay calm, to draw a deep breath, and to dive in and move through whatever life, in the wisdom and rhythms of its own currents, is throwing at them. I remind them of Antonio Machado’s simple four-line poem: “Mankind owns four things that are no good at sea: rudder, anchor, oars, and the fear of going down.” It takes some time to make peace with that “fear of going down,” but those who do often begin to find a deeper, calmer relationship with the

currents of their life, as diving down and then coming up for air become as natural as inhaling and exhaling. Those who stay with the process even longer may discover something else entirely, something akin to the capacity to breathe underwater, opening up for them a world in the oceanic depths that is infinitely more vast, wondrous, and full of life than the one on the surface. Two movies come to mind that illustrate this process. The first is Ron Howard’s 1984 romantic comedy Splash, starring Tom Hanks. Pay special attention to the last scene, just before and during the credits. The other is James Cameron’s 1989 underwater epic The Abyss, starring Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Watch for the scene where Mastrantonio’s character chooses to drown, and the one where Harris’s character moves through his initial fear of drowning, and in doing so discovers a way to go deeper than he ever thought possible. Both films are flawed, and are very different from each other in tone, but they each have a few moments that rise to the level of “cinema-therapy,” and that show the possibilities that open up when we are willing to “dive in.” As you look at the movie that is your own life, consider these questions: What challenges have you

encountered in the past? How have you responded? How and when have you tried to “rise above” them? How has it felt when you’ve succeeded? When have you been “knocked down?” What psycho-spiritual scrapes and bruises have you sustained in the wake of being knocked down, and perhaps dragged around a bit? How do you feel about “diving in” instead of trying to rise above? What fears get in the way of your trying to go deeper? Nearly four decades after diving into my first wave, I still struggle with the inclination to try and rise above it all, with the part of me that chooses to get knocked down and rolled around rather than face my fear of going deep, going under, going through. But I’ve come through enough waves, and glimpsed enough of that deeper world to know I want to try and live my life there, rather than on the surface. I’m determined to keep at it. And to support others who are ready to take the plunge. Who knows what we may find?
