New South Wales mining and mining services sector snapshot Mining New South Wales (NSW) has a long and proud history of mining. This vibrant industry is the product of favourable geology, leading to the discovery and development of many world-class mineral deposits. NSW has well developed infrastructure, low average operating costs, leading edge mining technologies, an available and highly skilled workforce, and a supportive state government. Mining is a major contributor to the NSW economy providing employment for around 27,000 people directly, as well as nearly 100,000 people indirectly. Mining is the state’s largest export industry. In 2015–16, NSW mining exports generated $17.4 billion in revenue and contributed to 30% of the state’s total exports. The state received nearly $1.2 billion in royalties from mineral production. The wealth generated by the NSW minerals industry is based on nearly 50 coal mines, 17 metallic mineral mines, many smaller metallic and mineral mines, and numerous construction materials operations. Future growth is expected to continue due to ongoing investment in mines, infrastructure, services, exploration, and research and development.
