It is my pleasure, on behalf of the Hockey Canada Board of
Directors, to congratulate the players, coaches, and support staff
on being selected to be a part of Canada’s National Junior Team for
the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship.
As chairman of the board of directors, I can’t help but consider
on this occasion the role that volunteers have played in helping
each and every member of Team Canada in getting to this level.
It is estimated that close to five million Canadians are
involved with grassroots hockey in some way. Many are parents,
providing financial and emotional support to their children
throughout their minor hockey careers. Others are coaches,
trainers, officials and administrators – ensuring through their
work that players have a positive hockey experience. Their
achievements at this event and in their future will be a legacy to
those who helped and encouraged them along their way.
I wish you all well on behalf of the board of directors, and on
behalf of those Canadians who keep minor hockey strong and growing
through our 13 regional branches.
This is a special year for Canada’s National Junior Team, for
the IIHF World Junior Championship and for Canadian hockey, with
the World Juniors on the ice in Canada’s two largest cities. The
tournament has become a staple of the holiday season for Canadians,
and I expect this year’s event in Toronto and Montreal to continue
Canada’s proud tradition of hosting the biggest and best World
Juniors.
We also recognize that during this Christmas season, our players
and staff would normally be at home with family and friends.
Instead, they have accepted the challenge of representing Canada on
the world stage. We recognize and admire their dedication and the
contributions of their families, friends, club teams, coaches and
volunteers who have helped them throughout their hockey
experiences.
We are very appreciative of the support provided by the Canadian
Hockey League and our premier sponsors – Nike, Esso, RBC Financial
Group, TELUS and TSN/RDS, the official broadcasters of Hockey
Canada. I would like to thank them and all of our sponsors and
licensees for their support.
We are very proud of the members of Canada’s National Junior
Team, and experience has shown us that they will represent
themselves, Hockey Canada and their country with heart and
determination.

HOCKEy CANADA’S PROGRAM OF ExCELLENCE / LE PROGRAMME
D’ExCELLENCE DE HOCKEy CANADA
Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence celebrated its 30th
anniversary in 2011-12, having made its debut at the 1982 IIHF
World Junior Championship.
In 33 years, the Program of Excellence has generated numerous
championships and great moments for Canadian hockey, including 15
IIHF World Junior Championship gold medals, three IIHF Ice Hockey
U18 World Championship gold medals and 19 summer under-18 gold
medals (since 1991).
The Program of Excellence allows Hockey Canada to identify and
train its most gifted young hockey players, to encourage and
motivate them to play for Canada and to provide them with the
opportunities to measure and refine their skills against top
calibre international competition.
Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence identifies players in
specific age categories and provides them with an opportunity to
take part in international competition, preparing them for the IIHF
World Junior Championship, the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship
and the Olympic Winter Games.
In men’s hockey, the Program of Excellence includes the national
under-17 program, Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team and
Canada’s National Junior Team.
The benefits are enormous not only for the players who
participate, but for all levels of organized hockey in Canada. By
achieving greater success in international hockey, Canadians
develops new pride in Canada’s national sport and signify to the
rest of the world that hockey is, indeed, Canada’s game.
“There is nothing that quite compares to representing Canada in
an international competition. To this day, I have great memories
from each and every time I put on the Team Canada jersey. Playing
for Team Canada had a great impact on me as a player and a
person.”
Michael Richards (Kenora, Ont.)
• bronze medallist, Team Ontario (2002 World Under-17 Hockey
Challenge)• gold medallist, Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18
Team (2002 Eight Nations Cup) • silver medallist, Canada’s National
Junior Team (2004 IIHF World Junior Championship)• gold medallist,
Canada’s National Junior Team (2005 IIHF World Junior
Championship)
“One of the great things about playing for Team Canada is that
it’s all about hockey. The coaches and staff do a great job in
preparing and, as a player, all you have to worry about is playing
the game and not holding back. The details are always taken care of
and you feel like you have everything you need to succeed.”
Ryan Getzlaf (Regina, Sask.)
• Team West (2002 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge)• gold
medallist, Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team (2003 IIHF World
U18 Championship)• silver medallist, Canada’s National Junior Team
(2004 IIHF World Junior Championship)• gold medallist, Canada’s
National Junior Team (2005 IIHF World Junior Championship)
“Playing for Canada internationally was definitely a highlight
in my hockey career. To this day, I keep in touch with a lot of the
guys that I played with at the World Juniors in 2004. I will also
always remember the great support that we got from back home in
Canada. We received emails from fans and family, and Team Canada
alumni messages were posted at the hotel. You knew that you were
part of something very special.”
Maxime Talbot (St-Bruno, Que.)
• Team Quebec (2001 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge)• gold

Michael Richards (Kenora, Ontario)

Ryan Getzlaf (Regina, Saskatchewan)
