    Introduction

Paint is a very complex and versatile material, offering more challenges to the chemist than mostother products. It has been known in various formssince prehistory,

Paint is any liquid, quantifiable, or masticcomposition which after application to a substratein a thin layer is converted to an opaque solid film.

Components ofPaintsPrimeris a preparatory coating put on materials beforepainting. Priming ensures better adhesion of paint to the

surface, increases paint durability, and provides additionalprotection for the material being painted. It can also beused to block and seal stains, or to hide a color that is tobe painted over.

Emulsion paint is a water-based paint used for paintinginterior or exterior surfaces. Varnish and shellac providea protective coating without changing the color. They arepaints without pigment.Wood stain is a type of paint that is very "thin," that is, low

in viscosity, and formulated so that the pigment penetratesthe surface rather than remaining in a film on top of thesurface. Stain is predominantly pigment ordye andsolvent with little binder, designed primarily to add colorwithout providing a surface coating.

Lacqueris usually a fast-drying solvent-based paint or varnish thatproduces an especially hard, durable finish. An enamel paint is apaint that dries to an especially hard, usually glossy, finish. Enamelpaints sometimes contain glass powder or tiny metal flakefragments instead of the color pigments found in standard oil-basedpaints. Enamel paint is sometimes mixed with varnish or urethaneto increase shine as well as assist its hardening process.

A glaze is an additive used with paint to slow drying time andincrease translucency, as in faux painting and Art Painting.

A roof coating is a fluid applied membrane which has elasticproperties that allows it to stretch and return to their original shapewithout damage. It provides UV protection to polyurethane foamand is widely used as part of a roof restoration system.

Inks are similar to paints, except they are typically made usingfinely ground pigments or dyes, and are designed so as not toleave a thick film of binder.

Titanium oxide pigment accounts for the largest use of the element.Titanium paint is an excellent reflector of infrared, and isextensively used in solar observatories where heat causes poorseeing conditions.

Anti-graffiti coatings are used to defeat the marking of surfaces bygraffiti vandals. There are two categories, sacrificial and non-bonding. Sacrificial coatings are clear coatings that allow theremoval of graffiti, usually by pressure washing the surface withhigh-pressure water, removing the graffiti, and the coating (hence, sacrificed). They must be re-applied afterward for continuedprotection. This is most commonly used on natural-lookingmasonry surfaces, such as statuary and marble walls, and onrougher surfaces that are difficult to clean. Non-bonding coatingsare clear, high-performance coatings, usually catalyzedpolyurethanes, that allow the graffiti very little to bond to. After thegraffiti is discovered, it can be removed with the use of a solventwash, without damaging the underlying substrate or protectivecoating. These work best when used on smoother surfaces, andespecially over other painted surfaces, including murals.

Anti-climb paint is a non-drying paint that appears normal whilestill being extremely slippery. It is usually used on drainpipes andledges to deter burglars and vandals from climbing them, and is

found in many public places. When a person attempts to climbobjects coated with the paint, it rubs off onto the climber, as well asmaking it hard for them to climb.

    Prospects

The market for paints in India is expected to grow at 1.5 times to2 times GDP growth rate in the next five years. With GDPgrowth expected to be over and above 7% levels, the top threeplayers are likely to clock above industry growth rates, especially given the fact that protection that was available tounorganized players has come down significantly .

Decorative paints are expected to witness higher growth going

forward. The fiscal incentives given by the government to thehousing sector have benefited the housing sector immensely. This will benefit key players in the long term

    Paintis made up of

Pigments are granular solids incorporated into the paint tocontribute color, toughness, texture or simply to reduce the cost of

the paint. Alternatively, some paints contain dyes instead of or in

    combination with pigments.

Fillers are a special type of pigment that serve to thicken the film, support its structure and simply increase the volume of the paint.

Fillers are usually made of cheap and inert materials, such as

diatomaceous earth, talc, lime, baryte, clay, etc.

    Binder or vehicle

The binder, commonly referred to as the vehicle, is the actual

film forming component of paint. It is the only component thatmust be present; other components listed below are includedoptionally, depending on the desired properties of the cured film. The binder imparts adhesion, binds the pigments together, andstrongly influences such properties as gloss potential, exterior

    durability, flexibility, and toughness.

Binders include synthetic or natural resins such as acrylics,vinyl-acrylics, vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE), polyurethanes, polyesters, melamine resins epoxy, or oils

Binders can be categorized according to drying, or curingmechanism. The four most common are simple solventevaporation, oxidative crosslinking, catalyzed polymerization, and coalescence.

    Additives

Besides the three main categories of ingredients, paint can have awide variety of miscellaneous additives, which are usually added invery small amounts and yet give a very significant effect on theproduct. Some examples include additives to modify surface tension, improve flow properties, improve the finished appearance, increase wet edge, improve pigment stability, impart antifreeze properties, control foaming,

control skinning, etc. Other types of additives include catalysts, thickeners, stabilizers, emulsifiers, texturizers, adhesion promoters, UV stabilizers, flatteners(de-glossing agents), biocides to fight bacterial growth.

One ofthe majorpigmentdeveloped and soldis the Ultramarine blue pigment

Ultramarine Blue is a very useful paint pigment for almost all type of surface

coatings. The general class of stoving enamels is another case where the pigmentscan be useful, both for the ease of dispersion and heat stability. Where these areused for external work, the best quality stoving finish can give chemical resistanceto acid attack, and a notable application here is in flamboyant effect which can beachieved using a lightly pigmented Ultramarine film over an aluminum undercoat.Machinery finishes and toy enamel, where alkali resistance & lack of toxicity areneeded Ultramarine blue is popularly used.

Chemcals usedin preparing a pigment are :-

    Oppurtunitites in PaintIndustry

Industry players are positive and confident on seeing positive growth numbers in

    2010 and 2011.

Mature markets such as Australia, South Korea and Japan may have lowermarket growth but high paint consumption per capita which indicates that it is arather saturated market. Areas of opportunities in these countries lie in the form ofhigh value coatings exhibiting higher performance attributes or to be used in

    niche applications,

The terms green chemistry, nanotechnology and smart coatings are the current buzz

words and formulators are finding ways to couple these 3 technologies together to

produce coatings that are not just environmentally friendly but also able to enhancesustainability.

The marine, yacht and offshore coatings market was a mixed bag in2009. While certain segments were soft, other areas, particularlynewbuilding and offshore, offered growth opportunities.

Geographically, the Asia-Pacific region comprises the largestmarket for marine coatings. According to McRae, Global MarketingDirector of Sherwin-Williams, nearly 70%of the market is now in theAsia-Pacific region.
