The most extensive state funded small business assistance program in the nation

• Started in 1984 by the NC General Assembly
• SBCs are hosted by NC Community Colleges
• Some SBCs have multiple sites or satellite offices – 60+ offices state-wide
• SBCs purposively focus on entrepreneurship & economic development
• There is a SBC within a 30 minute drive of every NC resident
• 100% State funded through NC Legislature ($6.1M FY2013-2014)
• Funding represents an investment of $2,117 per job created/retained by network

• Purpose is to create startups, assist troubled businesses & create/retain jobs
• All services are FREE– Confidential One-on-One Counseling
– Workshops & Seminars
– Resources & Referrals
• Seminars/Workshops (up to 10hrs, most 3 hrs)
• Local and Available

Primary purpose is Main Street economic development
• Increase success rate and number of profitable small businesses
• Create jobs
• Provide a significant education component
• The SBC is the lead agency for exploringbusiness ownership & the go-to technicalassistance provider for downtown &Main Street businesses
• Boots 2 Business: SBCs are the lead NC agency for training to transitioning military members
