Planning for the future of a farm business beyond retirement and death is an essential, yet often neglected, responsibility of a farmer who intends future generations of their family to be the beneficiaries.

Establishing a plan for how the farm is to be run, the distribution of the assets, and who is to benefit, requires the security of a succession plan. Failure to opt for the guidance and certainty of a well-considered succession plan leaves the farmer’s business and assets vulnerable to liquidation to settle the estate if no agreement as to the management of the farm can be reached by feuding family members.

Barriers to initiating a succession planThe complexity of having to cater for the differing interests, values and objectives of the successors has led to farmers putting off planning for their future. Observations of farmers have highlighted that little discussion has been occurring between the older and younger generations as to how to plan for the future management of the farm business.

Older farmers often prolong addressing and committing to a succession plan due to their underlying concerns as to how to simultaneously fund their retirement, pass on a viable business for the family members who are interested in managing the farm, and providing a fair inheritance for children who do not wish to pursue farming.
