understanding of what New Media is ,as well as how they can be utilized in creating meaniful value.

Mass CommunicationThe study of how individuals and entities

relay information through mass media to large segments of the population at the same time.

It focuses on a single source transmitting information to a large/heterogenous groups of receivers

Mass Mediaany means of public communication that can

reach a large audience. Over the years, mass media included: the Radio and Television; Magazines and Newspapers too.

New Media Implies What?• The shift of all culture to computer- mediated

forms of production, distribution and communication(Manovich, 2006)

• Includes the Internet, Web sites, Cmputer mutimedia, CD ROMs and DVD,

• Hitherto, still photographs, books, newspapers existed in the taditional forms only.

• Convergence of the Computer and Telecommunication have ushered triggered the greatest revolution after Gutenberg otherwise called Digital Media

Digital Media• Digital media comprises both Internet and

mobile mass communication systems. Internet media provides many mass media services, such as email, websites, blogs, internet based radio and television and recently social media.

• The emergence of information and communication technology has broken barriers and boundaries.

Overall Media Functions• Harold Lasswell summarized the functions of

the media in society when he identified “three major activities” while Charles Wright added the fourth activity:

• SURVEILLANCE of the environment;• correlation of parts of society in responding

to the environment;• transmission of social heritage from one

generation to the next; and• entertainment. (Wright 1959:9)

term that describes how activities are monitored in the digital age -- by governments, businesses, or individuals -- using the Internet and other sophisticate technologies.

have billions of active users e.g. FacebookCorporate and Individual Visibility: we can

always take advantage of the huge communities

Trust and Retransmissions: People are more likely to share information from trusted sources.

Social media harbour information on all subjects:•Education: PTAs use this to connect, as well as students(21st century learning)• Politics: politician use social media to spread their messages & influence people’s political view• Business: Old advert techniques do not yield desired ROI(over 300,000 businesses have presence on facebook)•Job market: a dominant force in companies hiring techniques•Revolutionary waves: activist take advantage of social media to connect people and initiate a political change.

Understanding Social MediaSocial media is not a project, but a process.

Resist the temptation to do it fast and big, and instead win hearts and minds of consumers in bits by the day. The ability to go slow, not fast is what distinguishes Hall of Famers

Social media is all about connecting and building dialogue with people: your customers ,relatives, classmates ,co-workers and potential hires

• Twitter can be best described as a micro-blog(a messaging service) that allows people 140 characters to share anything.

• what is a tweet : a tweet can be a message , emotion or a picture

• 500 million users• 11 people join per second.• Twitter is a convenient and instant way for

you to communicate with your colleagues and friends

• Google+ is literally Google with a plus. The "+" is the social networking it adds to all of Google's other services, including Gmail, YouTube, and Blogger. Google+ brings popular social-media features like comments, photo- and music-sharing, video-chat, etc. to your social circles.

• A video-sharing website, created in February 2005 and bought by Google since late 2006, on which users can upload, view and share videos

• 2nd largest search engine in the world• Most of the content on YouTube has been

uploaded by individuals, but media corporations including BBC,Vevo and other organizations offer some of their material via YouTube, as part of the YouTube partnership program.

Instagram is an online photo-sharing, video sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, apply digital filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr

Instagram was created and launched in October 2010. The service rapidly gained popularity, with over 100 million active users as of Dec 2013.

Flickr is the best way to store, sort, search and share your photos online. Flickr helps you organize that huge mass of photos you have and offers a way for you to tell stories about them.

What Future?• New Media are indispensable to corporate

governance. Pope Francis has a twitter handle!

• Organizations should urgently institute New(Social) Media Strategy. It’s the age of ‘Business @ the Speed of Thought

• Relevant orientation should be given to officers. Deploying the apps not enough!

• New media confers three titles on users: REPORTER/WRITER, EDITOR and PUBLISHER.
