Ballyhass Wakepark is Ireland’s largest wakepark based just outside Mallow Co.Cork. We have been open since march 2014 and have already introduced over 3000 people to the worlds fasted growing watersport wakeboarding. (Think floating skatepark!) Its the coolest new sport in Munster and people have been blown away by how much fun it is, how great it is for fitness and meeting new friends. We are now offering a full scholarship to a max of two students from any local school to learn how to wakeboard for free! The course has a value of almost €3000!
To celebrate our first season we are offering two participants from any local school, the opportunity to take part in a 16 week scholarship programme that runs through out the school year. Each week both participants will get loads of time on the cable to up their skills on the water, which will ultimately get them up to competition standard by the end of the course. In addition, they will learn group management skills, coaching and teaching tips, water safety, risk assessments, blogging and marketing skills. By the end of the scholarship the participants will become brand ambassadors for Ballyhass wakepark and wakeboarding in Ireland.
To apply you need to fill out the accompanying application form and give it back to your teacher. You need to make sure you can commit to the full course and also able to get to and from Ballyhass on a Wednesday afternoon. There will be students from other local schools taking part so remember you are representing your school throughout the course and then representing Ballyhass for the rest of your wakeboarding career! If there are a lot of applications there may also be interviews for the available places. Remember even if you don’t get on the scholarship, everyone who applies gets a free beginners lesson! Through out the 16 week scholarship course, participants will learn how to be competent wakeboarders to a standard to take part in their first wakeboarding competition. They will be given the skills to manage groups of beginners on the start dock, and be fully aware of the water safety issues that arise around a wakepark. In the course of the scholarship they will also learn key coaching and training practices that are transferable across all fields. They will be required to both utilize written and video blog formats to record their experience on the scholarship.
Wakeboarding is the fastest growing water sport in the world with over 5 million participants. It is similar to snowboarding or skateboarding on water, and has become the cool and youthful alternative to water skiing. With the advent of cable parks it has become accessible to the masses. Ballyhass in 2014, opened the largest wakeboarding centre in Ireland (think floating skatepark) and are keen to promote the sport to the local community.
Participants must be 14 yrs or older and must be able to have travel arrangements to Ballyhass Lakes each week. They are required to attend each week and complete all of the extra course work required by the coaches. Among the extra course work, participants will be required to keep a diary blog about their experiences and participate in an overall video series that will be filmed over the sixteen week course.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Reach a level of wakeboarding that will allow the participants to take part in their first competition by the end of the 16 week course.Demonstrate an understanding of the need for safety in and around a water environment.Learn valuable coaching skills and teaching techniques that will be useful across a wide range of group situations.Group management techniquesBlogging skills both written and videoDevelop an understanding of the history and potential future of wakeboarding in Ireland and across the world.Participants are expected to gain confidence from working with others in a changing business environment
STUDENT COURSE WORK:
6 written diary blog posts (approx 3 hours)Participation in 3 video diary blogs and end of year wakeboarding video edit.Project research folder (comprised of 10 x 1 hour homework)Will be required to present their folder project and video edits to their class at the end of the year along side Ballyhass coaches and trainers.
