Last night Ken and I, along with Alan and Jan Stewart were at Government House Ballroom for the announcement of the Australian of The Year Awards for WA. Four outstanding Western Australians were finalists and we are absolutely delighted to congratulate the Australian of the Year for WA, our good friend and Rotarian Prof. Ralph Martins, from the RC of West Perth. The work Ralph and his team are dong in the area of Alzheimer research is world renowned and of huge importance to an ever increasing aged population. Ralph has struggled for adequate funds for equipment to carry out his vital work, and hopefully this recognition will lift his profile even higher and enable him to attract extra funds allowing his full energies to go into the area of research rather than so much of it having to be channelled into fundraising. Rhonda Parker, the Australian Local Hero for WA, in her brief speech made a wonderful statement, which I’d like to repeat. She said she is part of a Team and that there is no ‘I’ in the word Team which stands for ‘Together Everyone Achieves More’. True in all situations, particularly Rotary. Working together we definitely achieve more and globally, Rotary has the power to really make a difference. has asked to move from an active member to that of ‘Friend of the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay’ due to time constraints and personal reasons. Roh assures us that nothing will change as far as venue and catering etc. He will continue to assist and support all charity work and community activities whole heartedly. All members are very grateful to Roh for all he has done in many ways to help establish the club, and in particular affording us the simple way to raise some vital dollars whilst enjoying a lovely meal at the cafe, which we have done on a few occasions. Our sincere thanks Roh and we’ welcome your return as a full member if you see your way clear to do so in the future.
Hopefully, this week Jane will be back at the club and bringing along Andrew Blackwell who will update us as to what is planned for the sensory garden upgrade in the Murchison Ward at Graylands Hospital.
Our lovely new pull up banner was used for the first time last meeting and we will
have our bannerettes in just over a week.

Dr Ken Collins AddressThe function, which is a promotion of the Rotary Foundation, traditionally held in November to coincide with Rotary Foundation month had 191 registrants and was capably emceed by Bill Hassell . The Hon. Bob Nicholson reiterated how the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship benefited his life, Vice Chair of the Rotary Foundation John Germ presented an overview of the RF which portrayed a very small portal into the boundless ability we have to uplift people and communities around the world working with the Foundations educational and humanitarian programs.
PRID & PRFT Ken Collins gave recognition to the various levels of support for the Foundation from Centurions, Paul Harris Fellows, Paul Harris Society members and major donors. Members of District Foundation Committees plus recipients of Foundation Awards were recognised. It is vital to have the funds and workers to enable the programs of the Rotary Foundation to reach their full potential of ‘doing good in the world’ and to be our ‘Foundation for Peace’.
AmeliaAround $300 was raised for PolioPlus from sale of tickets through our Club.
Nominations for Board for 2010-11If any member would like to nominate for a position on the Board please complete a nomination form and have it
signed and seconded and hand it in to Sec. Daniel for the AGM on 10th December.
Magnifying MicroscopesDir. Rob has the microscopes in hand, the bases of which have been sent off by Elizabeth and Graeme for the Rotary emblem to be engraved on each. Teachers Manuals, which are being sponsored by Watercorp are almost complete and an ‘official launch’ of the project is planned before the end of the school year. Dir. Rob and PRID Ken are working towards a successful launch in the coming weeks.
Burundi Peace ChoirThe Burundi Peace Choir performed at the Dr Ken Collins Address last Monday night. Unfortunately, there was no opportunity for them to do a sound check and the balance was not 100 percent. Never the less, their performance added to the function. Just awaiting word back from Melpo Economou as to how much of the $3,500 has been raised to fund the production of their CD. It is hoped that all or almost all money required has been collected by a number of clubs contributing to the cause.
The 2010 District 9450 Conference is coming! District Governor Geoff Simpson has been telling every Club about it about it and here is the chance now to register for what will be a highlight of the Rotary year.

From the District Governor’s DeskDear Fellow Rotarians, and Friends,
Well, what a month. Margaret and I have completed our club visits and wasn't it an eye-opener. Congratulations to you all on the great work you are doing in your communities and overseas and also many thanks for your kind hospitality as we travelled around the District.
Since last writing we have also attended the Disrict 9470 Conference at the Sheraton Hotel, vistited the Matilda Bay Craft Fair, attended a week-long DG Seminar and Rotary Institute in Newcastle and capped it off with the Annual Dr Ken Collins Address. The Rotary Institute was very informative and we were brought up to date with how our donations are being put to great use in the Victorian Bushfire aftermath.
November being The Rotary Foundation Month was quite successful. Support to the Polio film night yielded a small profit and the attendance at the Ken Collins address to hear VC TRF John
Germ was heartening. That night we launched the Paul Harris Society, with 11 members commited to contributing at least $US1000 each year, whilst able. We should also be planning on what our contribution will be next February to take the End Polio Now Campaign to the public. To date the District has contribute some $26,000 to TRF and $9000 to the End Polio Now Campaign. Please keep up the great work, we have a long way to go..
Next month we are on the down hill to Christmas and half way through the year. Time for some extra effort to achieve our goals, the year is running out.
Next week the District 9450 Conference Brochure will be published. We hope you are all going to join us at this great event.
Have a great month in Rotary.

The Rotary FoundationWeek 21: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about how a Group Study Exchange can make history.
For the first time in southern African history, a group study exchange has taken
place between two formerly conflicting countries.
In November 2006 a GSE team from Zambia visited South Africa, signifying improved relations between the two countries. This exchange was made possible from a contribution of district designated funds from District 9210 to District 9300.
With the end of Apartheid in South Africa, these young professionals are now able to talk to one another and share ideas and common interests that will help their countries look to the future in peace.
Some of the greatest stories being told today started with a contribution to The Rotary Foundation. Let’s make sure our club is part of the Rotary story.

AN INVITATION FROM YOUR DISTRICT
GOVERNOR
Dear Rotarians and friends, On behalf of the Rotary Club of West Perth, I would like to invite you to the last Conference for District 9450. It is to be a Conference of Celebration – of Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow. The Conference program will be wide and varied. It will educate, entertain and raise your passions. The Conference will showcase a number of our great projects from yesteryear, trace their progress and forecast their future. Our 50th Anniversary gift to Western Australia, the Medical School at the University of Western Australia will be one. The Chancellor of UWA, Michael Chaney, will be one of our key note speakers. Other projects will be brand new, on show for the first time, some straight from their international launch at the Rotary International Convention in Birmingham. In addition, there will be a number of speakers on topics of general interest to inform and entertain, together with a host of displays in the House of Friendship. Each club is encouraged to book a display booth and showcase your own projects. Overall, we want you to have fun! Renew acquaintances with fellow Rotarians from other clubs, meet new friends and welcome the Youth Exchange students and Rotaractors in our midst. We have a wonderful, hardworking conference committee who will ensure that your needs are satisfied and your questions answered, while still managing to keep the conference on time and our hunger satisfied. The Governor’s Banquet at the newly extended Hillarys Yacht Club promises to be a highlight. However there are limited seats, so get in early. In latter years our conference attendance has been shrinking. Please help us reverse that trend, register now, put on your finery and help us truly Celebrate Rotary. I hope to see many of you at the District Conference next April. Yours in Rotary Geoff Simpson District Governor D9450
