As well as farewelling out Charter President and board at the helm, we have also farewelled District 9450. Western Australia has now gone from 3 Rotary districts to 2, and we are now in District 9455 with District Governor (DG) Ian Hutton at the helm. We started the new Rotary year with our Changeover Dinner on 1 st July 2010 at the lovely Nedlands Golf Club. With 37 members, potential members, family and friends in attendance, the night gave us the opportunity to reflect on all we have achieved in our first 18 months (documented in our first Annual Report, available at http://www.slideshare.net/ rcfwb/annual-report2008-10 ), induct Premier Colin Barnett as an honorary member of our club, thank the outgoing board, and introduce our board for 2010-11. DG Ian presented outgoing President Di with a Presidential Citation, which is a recognition of a well balanced program of activities and a growth in membership over the year – something the whole club can be proud of because it is your efforts which made this possible. We in turn presented a certificate of appreciation to Margaret Brawley, who has knitted many of the toys we have sent abroad. Four of our club members attended the joint Districts 9450, 9460 and 9470 Changeover on July 3 at the South of Perth Yacht Club. Now that we are entering our 2 nd full Rotary year, we are no longer a “new” club but an “established” club. I'd like to focus this year on you, our members, to ensure you are enabled to achieve what you joined Rotary for. I plan to introduce a comprehensive member orientation program, to reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed by just how much Rotary encompasses. I would also like to meet with every member, individually or in small groups, after the meeting or for a coffee on the Photo: Dr Ken Collins welcomes The Hon. Colin Barnett MLA to the Club

From the President Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Welcome to the new Rotary year! As well as farewelling out Charter President and board at the helm, we have also farewelled District 9450. Western Australia has now gone from 3 Rotary districts to 2, and we are now in District 9455 with District Governor (DG) Ian Hutton at the helm.

We started the new Rotary year with our Changeover Dinner on 1st July 2010 at the lovely Nedlands Golf Club. With 37 members, potential members, family and friends in attendance, the night gave us the opportunity to reflect on all we have achieved in our first 18 months (documented in our first Annual Report, available at http://www.slideshare.net/rcfwb/annual-report2008-10), induct Premier Colin Barnett as an honorary member of our club, thank the outgoing board, and introduce our board for 2010-11.

DG Ian presented outgoing President Di with a Presidential Citation, which is a recognition of a well balanced program of activities and a growth in

m e m b e r s h i p over the year – something the whole club can be proud of because it is your efforts which made this possible. We in turn presented a certificate of appreciation to M a r g a r e t Brawley, who has knitted many of the toys we have sent abroad.

Four of our club members attended the joint Districts 9450, 9460 and 9470 Changeover on July 3 at the South of Perth Yacht Club.

Now that we are entering our 2nd full Rotary year, we are no longer a “new” club but an “established” club. I'd like to focus this year on you, our members, to ensure you are enabled to achieve what you joined Rotary for. I plan to introduce a comprehensive member orientation program, to reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed by just how much Rotary encompasses. weekend, to talk about what your expectations for Rotary are, and to look at how we can best meet them, so that you feel your time in Rotary is valuable, even if you aren't able to attend our club meetings regularly.

I would like to thank once again our charter President Di for all her long hours behind the scenes over the past 2 years. I would also like to thank all of you who have been a part of our club, whether you are an active member or now a friend of the club, for your contribution in that time as well. I look forward to working with you in the year ahead to build better communities and bridge continents.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Simone Carot CollinsClub President

RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment)The Club sponsored three students to RYPEN in May.  The following letter has been received from one of the students Stephen Kikiros dated 3rd June.

Dear Sir/Madam,

My name is Stephen Kikiros and I was fortunate enough to be sponsored by your Rotary club to attend the RYPEN camp last weekend.

It was a truly enlightening experience, as I learnt so much about organisational skills, punctuality, debating skills and job interview techniques.   I also made many new friends and learned about exciting opportunities in the future like Rotary exchange.

None of this would have been possible without your sponsorship, thank you very much.

Yours faithfully,Stephen Kikiros

Thank You to the Bains’Our member Elizabeth and her Rotarian husband Graeme quietly go about doing Rotary work.   A huge thank you to you both for the mighty effort you  put in annually to make RYPEN successful.  Both volunteering their time for the weekend camp.

Another not so little thing that Elizabeth and Graeme have quietly done (however a little bird let the secret out) was to take 60 aprons when the Club visited the Manna facility in May and had them embroidered with something like “I am special”.

Blankets for WilunaAnother three bags of blankets are in the Collins’ g a r a g e a w a i t i n g transportation to Wiluna.  Two have come from the knitters at St Louis Estate and one from Wendy Pascoe, wife of PDG Doug.

Marcos and SimoneSimone and Marcos put a huge effort into compiling and printing the Club History and Annual Report along with the program/menu for the tables for C h a n g e o v e r .  Marcos also took photos on the night, a number of which you can see in the Bulletin.   Thank you both for the great work you continue to do.

Congratulations to Our New President and BoardCongratulations to new President Simone, PE Bill and Board for 2010-11.   The Club will all get behind the new Board to ensure we enjoy another year of outstanding Service and Fellowship.

Change in Rotary PolicyAt the recent Council on Legislation a policy change allowing a subscription for one official Rotary Magazine per household rather than one per Rotarian, came into being.   Club members affected by this (where there are couples in the Club) have been advised and have chosen which of the

magazines they wish to subscribe to, thus reducing one members Annual dues by around $40.00.

Change from Active Membership to FriendsA few of our members have decided to change from ‘Active’ membership to ‘Friends of the RC of Freshwater Bay’.

We are pleased to retain their connection to the Club and look forward to their continuing assistance with projects and participation with our fundraising and social activities.

The members concerned are Lyn Packer (who is residing almost full time in Vietnam), Roger Marston who is being kept away from us due to his

work with Rio Tinto, Debbie Cash who finds it difficult to get to a Wednesday meeting and Peter Symons who has taken on a promotion which now precludes him from attending our meetings.

Updated Information on MembersWould members please advise Sec. Di of any changes in details.   Updated membership information will be sent out again shortly. Some members have had changes in addresses, telephone numbers, mobile numbers etc which the Secretary does not have current information on.

Whenever information changes, advice to the Secretary would be greatly appreciated.

Polio Plus Personal ContributionPeter and Mandy Symons have made a person contribution to PolioPlus for which we thank them most sincerely.   Peter, Mandy and Rik have been outstanding supporters and fundraisers for Rotary’s PolioPlus with them raising funds through a personal auction of a water purifier, and on several occasions organising for a portion of concert ticket sales to go to PolioPlus.

We know the Symons family will continue their assistance through these types of avenues and will also continue to work towards a fundraising concert in the next 12 months.

RYDAClive Boddy, Jen Martins and Elizabeth Bain went along to the very first Rotary Youth Driver Awareness for D. 9450

held on 23rd June.  Our Club sponsored Newman College.  Thanks to all three for the work put into making the day a success. District Governor 9450 Geoff Simpson, Dear sir,

I am sorry you missed such a spectacular RYDA event today where the Rotary Clubs of Matilda Bay and Freshwater Bay h o s t e d t h e Mirrabooka Senior High School and Newman College. The school staff and the first time visitors were rocked, for want of a better word. The RYDA Committee are aware of the goals of the RYDA program and tend to take the o u t c o m e s f o r granted.   The comments by and appreciation of school staff and presenters was a reinforcement that Rotary is doing a good thing. They  e x p r e s s e d appreciation of the efforts of Rotarians in the host Rotary Clubs to help stop these young people becoming road trauma statistics.  One presenter, who presents elsewhere, commented that the RYDA event was not what was expected - it was better. Since you were ably represented by DGE Ian and the DGN Liz I expect they will be reporting   to you personally, about how the host Rotary Clubs did you proud.  They might also  mention that the   Matilda Bay Club with the larger
