Rebuilding, a support group that aims to help people recover from broken love relationships — whether involving a marriage, engagement or dating — will start a new round of meetings Sept. 3.

The 14-week, confidential sessions, which run through Dec. 10, will take place Tuesdays at New Hope and follow the book Rebuilding When Your Relationship Ends by Bruce Fisher and Robert Albert, a pastor and Christian counselor. Though biblical principles are woven throughout the text, it is written for a broad audience and not limited to any specific faith, gender, age or relationship status or length.

“It’s not just for divorced people,” said M. Lisa Hughes, who attends New Hope and co-leads with Pat McDonald, a facilitator for 13 years. Some sign up because they feel stuck and nervous about entering another relationship, she added.

The sessions serve to help individuals overcome whatever painful emotions still linger from a relationship, regardless of when it ended. The group assists participants in recovering from the pain and confusion of a broken relationship, learn about themselves, find out what went wrong and grow to make better choices in the future.

“It is a process,” McDonald said. “It’s kind of like growing in Christ: You don’t just make all of those changes overnight because it’s old habits and opinions that die hard, and getting people to focus on what matters in a relationship.”

Ample time for discussion is a key component of the weekly meetings — and what sets Rebuilding apart from similar groups. Peer discussion is often what leads to breakthroughs for some people, McDonald said.

“I know that this makes a difference in people’s lives,” she said. “I've seen it. I've experienced it.”

Among those experiences, McDonald can cite her own: Her introduction to Rebuilding was as a participant who joined after several years spent “trying to be superwoman” after separating from her husband — only to run into a brick wall.

“My soul was crying out, ‘I need help….I need something, somebody to help me through it,’” McDonald recalled. Rebuilding opened her eyes to the deep hurts she was still holding on to and helped jumpstart her personal relationship with God.

Her role as a facilitator has become her ministry, and she delights in seeing participants grow. She encourages people to reach beyond church walls — think coworkers or neighbors struggling with divorce — and consider who they know who might need help.

“Rebuilding is almost magical the way it happens,” she said. “It works. It’s God at work.”

Rebuilding: TestimonialsA few comments from past participants:

"We each needed this group and these new friendships to go through this time in our lives. We have learned how to grow from our past relationships and start building new healthier relationships."

"Friends rush you to feel better. At Rebuilding, you are given time, space and honest input to recover at your own pace, but in a more focused manner."

“The material is very supportive of the hurt and pain in such experiences but focuses more on healing and moving onward with life in a positive manner.”

Weekly ChallengeWhat does it mean to have a heart that is pleasing to God? Ask God to give you a heart that pleases Him.

The Back Page follows the Bible lessons that children and youth are studying and serves to help kids and adults continue the spiritual discussion at home and establish patterns of a devotional life.

While Pushpa Basnet was studying social work in college, she visited a women’s prison as part of her studies. The 21-year-old was shocked to discover children living behind bars. When no local guardian is available, arrested parents often must choose between bringing their children to jail with them or letting them live on the streets. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, and there are few children’s homes affiliated with the government. These children had no place to go, and Basnet knew what she had to do.

She decided to start a day care to get incarcerated children out from behind prison walls. Everyone was against this idea; prison officials, government workers and even some of the prison mothers doubted that someone her age could handle such a project. But Basnet was undaunted.

Two months after the prison visit, she began to care for five children. She picked them up at the prison every weekday morning, brought them to her home and then returned them in the afternoon. Her program was the first of its kind in Kathmandu. When she started, some of the children in her care had never been outside a prison. Two years later,

Basnet established the Butterfly Home, a children’s center where she herself has lived for the past five years. Making ends meet is always a struggle. The children help by making greeting cards that Basnet sells as part of her handicraft business. She has sold her own jewelry and possessions to keep the center going.

She has assisted more than 140 children of incarcerated parents. In 2012, she honored as CNN’s Hero of the Year. At the CNN Heroes ceremony, one individual said, “This is what Pushpa Basnet’s heart looks like.”
