School—5491 4522 Unity College – 5490 5777 We recognise the traditional owners of this land the Gubbi Gubbi peoples. The situation regarding Karingal, the former Aged Care Facility owned by the Caloundra Foundation, is moving slowly. It is a valuable asset which the Parish Finance Council has discussed possibly purchasing. Perhaps the very obvious need that now presents itself, as set out below, could easily be met by the resources of the Parish and the Foundation but this will demand considerable cooperation. We cannot lose sight of the Gospel we serve or those to whom we are called to minister. I am sure with the resources we have the Parish can reach out to those most in need - something Caloundra Parish has done so well in the past. PARISH SUPPORT FOR REFUGEES. I’m sure that all are aware of the steps taken by both the Federal and State Governments to assist refugees arriving from Syria. In our Parish Newsletters of 13 th and 20 th September, I wrote about this matter and on Social Justice Sunday, 27 th September, 500 copies of the Statement of the Australian Catholic Bishops “For those who’ve come across the seas” were distributed within all our Parish communities as was the letter from our Archbishop Mark Coleridge, dated 14 th September. Archbishop Mark wrote: “I want to galvanise all the resources of the Archdiocese so that we can play our part in providing a safe and welcoming home for refugees who will come from the Middle East. Humanity requires it; the Gospel of Jesus Christ demands it. We have just over 100 parishes and I would want to commit to receiving at least 100 families in the Archdiocese. My hope is that these will be from among the neediest of the needy, whatever their religion may be. There is no doubt that Christians are among the neediest because they are caught in the crossfire of many battles. But, as people who know the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25-37), we will welcome all who come to us.” In preparation for responding to the call from the Archbishop, our Parish has registered with Clyde Cosentino of Evangelisation Brisbane, the person appointed by the Archbishop to coordinate this matter in the Archdiocese. It is not expected that the governmentally approved refugees will be arriving till next year but we need to prepare now. Hence I’ve arranged for a meeting on Wednesday 25 th November in the Adult Education Room, 7.00 pm to 8.30 pm. The purpose of the meeting is: To register all interested in supporting the settlement of a refugee family into our community. To set up a “Refugee Support Group” (or whatever name chosen.) To list/record the resources available. To list the additional resources needed and any other steps to be taken now in preparation. All interested in supporting this venture are most welcome. It is important that the relevant groups already operating in welfare matters in the Parish are represented at this planning stage. Please notify the Parish Office [email protected]or 5491 2011 by Monday 23 rd November for the purpose of catering if you are attending. I’m sure that once a “Refugee Support Group” or similar is established, the support of all Parishioners will be needed. God Bless, Fr Kevin Smith.
