The HVPD Kronos® Permanent Monitor is an on-line partial discharge (OLPD) insulation condition monitoring (CM) system suitable for the long-term, continuous monitoring of complete high voltage (HV) networks of 3.3 kV and above.

The HVPD Kronos® is third generation of HVPD’s OLPD Monitoring technology, having evolved from over 20 years of direct industrial OLPD testing and monitoring application by the HVPD Directors and Engineers.

This insulation CM solution provides information to help network operators avoid unplanned outages caused by insulation faults, by providing ‘early warning’ of ‘incipient’ insulation faults and OLPD trends. The average outage cost for the oil and gas industry has been reported at $220,000 per hour*. Based on this analysis the initial capital cost of a complete network monitoring system is paid back through the avoidance of one (1) unplanned outage on the network.

Supports Condition-Based Management (CBM) schemes, reducing unplanned outages, downtime and maintenance costs. The 24-channel HVPD Kronos® captures up to six (6) signal channels synchronously using its unique full cross point Smart Multiplexer. The HVPD Kronos® distributed across a HV network continuously transfer the insulation data to the central HVPD OLPD Measurements Database© installed at the customer’s control centre for logging, benchmarking and trending.Advanced OLPD identification and noise separation is achieved through synchronous data capture on multiple channels.Remotely accessible via a wide range of industry communications standards, including Modbus, DNP3.Up to four (4) HV motors can be monitored with a single HVPD Kronos® unit (up to 24x sensor inputs).19” rack-mountable, IP-65-rated fanless design, low power consumption.Avoids unnecessary alarms as any PD activity flagged is investigated by our experts and recommendations are given to asset managers.Generates a simple ‘OLPD Criticality’ number for the asset from 0‒100% through benchmarking and trending with the central HVPD OLPD Measurements Database ©All HVPD Kronos® monitors are networked and communicate back to the central Partial Discharge Monitoring Server (PDMS) for coordination and organisation of data.

HVPD OLPD Measurements Database© Interface Examples:

Level 1 - All Sites

Level 2 - One Site

Level 3 - One Switchroom

The HVPD Kronos® distributed across the HV network continuously transfer the insulation condition data to the central HVPD OLPD Measurements Database© for logging, benchmarking and trending to identify the worst-performing circuits.

HVPD OLPD Measurements Database© presents data hierarchically using a three (3) level Graphical User Interface (GUI) to:

Display all sites and all HV assets.

Show the condition of a site by using superimposed colour-coded indicators, integrated into a ‘mimic’ of the network’s Single-Line Diagram.

Provide detailed insulation information for each circuit in the switchroom.

Uniquely in the market, HVPD provide a dedicated, continuous OLPD condition monitoring service in conjunction with the monitoring technology and database, to provide continuous condition monitoring to support Condition-Based Management (CBM).

This Comprehensive solution has been designed to help operators to plan and conduct preventative maintenance interventions on critical assets well in advance of failure by providing an ‘early warning’ of incipient’ insulation faults across the network.

Database Monitoring Service Support Contract

HVPD’s Monitoring Service Contract includes HVPD OLPD Measurements Database© subscription, software upgrades, remote engineer response, data analysis and reporting, regular condition reports and asset management assistance.

Service Contract durations are typically 3 or 5 years.

Logging, benchmarking and trending of data through the HVPD OLPD Measurements Database© that holds data from all types of HV assets derived from over 20 years’ experience.

The user interface displays the condition of individual assets using colour-coded indicators integrated into a mimic of the HV network’s Single-Line Diagram (SLD).

Criticality rating from 0–100%, allows asset managers to focus on ‘Worst Performing Assets.’

A visualisation of data gives the operator clear indication of the health and reliability of their network whilst identifying any worst-performing circuits.

Network condition criticality information can be accessed in the control room, or remotely via HVPD OLPD Measurements Database© which incorporates HVPD's Critical Condition Bench-marking© (CCB) algorithms.

The monitoring service approach avoids false alarms as any egregious trends are initially flagged and then investigated by our dedicated monitoring engineers.

HVPD act as an external Decision Support Centre to help our client make effective asset management decisions.

Guaranteed secure upload and management of critical client data.

Example Configuration of HVPD Kronos®for Monitoring of Generators

All HVPD Kronos® monitoring devices are networked using local communications so that the condition monitoring data may be viewed and analysed at the control centre. The monitoring systems communicate back to a central PD Monitoring Service (PDMS) for coordination and organisation of data, supervisor interface and management, and for upload to the secure HVPD UK data centre for ‘or event’ analysis by HVPD diagnostic engineers.

Partial Discharge Monitoring Server (PDMS)

Advanced OLPD Diagnostic Capabilities

The system can accurately identify and locate insulation faults thanks to the advanced statistical waveshape analysis algorithms of the HVPD Kronos®. The PDMS acts as data concentrator for a network of nodes providing a single point of access for all PD data. The system gives an unparalleled insight into the asset condition, allowing the user to:

HVPD Multi™ (2011) HVPD Kronos® (2015)

Monitoring Systems 2011 vs 2015 Comparison

View real-time data for a particular node.

View events and trend data for individual channels. Display 2D / 3D events data.

Regenerate trend lines and reclassify PD retrospectively (in the training period).

Adaptively configure the smart multiplexer to perform precedence and/or coincidence measurements using a fixed array of sensors. This vital feature enables next generation noise discrimination and ‘incipient’ fault location.
