BACKGROUND INFORMATION

• Early 1500s: King Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church

• He established/controlled the Church of England

• A century later, Separatists were trying to break away (separate) from the Church of England

• The Pilgrims were a Separatist group

THE PILGRIMS LEAVE ENGLAND

• Pilgrims fled to Holland to live freely but soon wanted a new home• They asked the Virginia

Company to settle in America “as a distinct body by themselves”• November 1620: the

Mayflower landed in Plymouth

THE PILGRIMS FOUND PLYMOUTH

• Rough beginnings (same as Jamestown)

• Met helpful Native Americans: Samoset & Squanto

• They learned how to plant, hunt & fish and set up a trade network with the Natives

• Things went so well, the first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 to celebrate their good fortune

THE PURITANS COME TO MASSACHUSETTS BAY

• Between 1630-1640, the Puritans left England to escape religious persecution

• They wanted to reform or “purify” the practices of the Church of England (not break away from it like the Separatists)

• Thousands of Puritan families came to New England (called the Great Migration)

THE PURITANS COME TO MASSACHUSETTS BAY

• 1630: Massachusetts Bay Company set out to start a colony (after receiving a royal charter)

• Puritans were well prepared and didn’t suffer through a starving time

• John Winthrop was the colony’s Puritan governor

• The colony was set up as a commonwealth (everyone worked for the good of the whole group)

THE NEW ENGLAND WAY

• Basic unit of the commonwealth was the congregation (church group)

• Held town meetings to create laws for the community (only male church members could vote or hold office)

• By law, everyone attended church

• Emphasized duty, godliness, hard work & honesty

• Required children to learn to read (Bible)
