Welcome to the 2019 AIRC Conference. I hope you will enjoy this year’s program with our full scope of recruitment topics being presented under our theme of “New Directions in International Recruitment: Exploring, Diversifying and Leading the Way”.

We are gathered from across the USA and around the world and are pleased to welcome back so many of you who attend this conference every year. We also wish to extend a special welcome to those joining us for the first time.

For many of us, these are challenging times in our profession. There are always many questions during challenging times and I hope AIRC and all of you will continue to work together to bring new ideas and answers to addressing challenges and to reaffirm best practices in recruiting and enrollment for the years ahead.

On behalf of the 2019 Conference Committee, I want to welcome you to the 11th Annual Conference of the American International Recruitment Council here in beautiful Miami, Florida! We are confident that the AIRC conference will provide a valuable platform for each of you to hear fresh ideas, develop new relationships, and expand and refine your vision to be successful recruitment professionals.

Over the last eleven years, with the contribution and

support of our members and partners, AIRC has positioned itself as a leading advocate in ethical and professional recruitment practices in the United States and throughout the world. Today, AIRC is a respected voice in the field of international student recruitment. As a sought-after authority for best practices, the demand for AIRC’s ideas, resources and leadership continues to grow.

Our conference theme this year is “New Directions in International Recruitment: Exploring, Diversifying, and Leading the Way.” In today’s market, the number of educational institutions actively recruiting internationally continues to grow. At the same time, students’ choice of destinations is expanding. In this competitive environment, whether an admission professional or agent partner working in a secondary school, a community college, or a four-year university, each of us is pursuing new ways to augment our strategies to secure competitive advantage, better serve our students, and achieve our goals.

To address these objectives, during the course of the conference 40 sessions and workshops will cover four main areas: Strategic Planning for International Recruitment, Working Effectively with Agents, The Future of International Recruitment, and Planning for Success at All Levels of Study. Each presentation was carefully selected by the Conference Committee to offer an excellent combination of theoretical and practical topics.

In addition to the plenary and concurrent sessions, we are pleased to offer an expanded Exhibit Hall this year. Be sure to reserve time to engage with agent partners and service providers in the Hall. Finally, one of the most valuable aspects of the AIRC Conference is opportunity to for you to develop new contacts and nourish your existing relationships. Every conversation represents the chance to enlarge your network.

Greater China and Japan are comparatively reliable sending markets, but they are not immune from broader uncertainty in international student recruitment in America. Both countries experienced uncertainty due to trade disputes with the US, slowing population growth, and sometimes

erratic local government policies. Appetite for study abroad grows unevenly in smaller or inland cities, while it appears to have plateaued in tier 1 cities. A future-proof recruitment strategy requires anticipating these challenges and applying the lessons learned in mature markets like Japan to newer markets.
