practicăm, fie că suntem indivizi, grupuri sau state. Amintesc doar
cultură a păcii.
Dualitatea inerentă a
promovarea non-violentei, a toleranţei, dialogului, reconcilierii
și dreptăţii.

and comprehensible input, while listening to authentic English
used in a variety of ways.
Teachers who would like to introduce literary fragments/works
using technology may find this Internet tool very useful. It is a
highly motivating alternative to the traditional textbook. Their
first task is to search the web for the podcasts that accomplish
the aims of the lesson. After listening to the audio files, the
students can engage in a literary analysis. They may form a thesis
in relation to the text and explain and arguments in defence of
their thesis.
It is worth mentioning that the audio files are usually
accompanied by other helpful resources such as pictures, reviews,
descriptions, links which can be used during other stages of the
lesson, for example as warm up or post-listening activities.
Moreover, podcasts offer opportunities for students to work on
individual or collaborative projects that require research,
organizing the material, critical thinking and speaking. The
teacher can assign students to make a five-minute reading of a
passage from a novel/novella, coupled with a five-minute discussion
of
that extract: why they have chosen it, what themes and issues
the passage raised, how it related to the rest of the literary
work. The podcast are to be placed on a server so that students can
see each performance. The teacher can even display several criteria
by which the podcasts are judged: interpretation, completion of
task, arguments, originality.
Students can greatly benefit from using podcasts because they
can be channelled into focusing on writing, speaking and on how
English works, while, at the same time improve their computer
literacy.

bucurie a lucrului temeinic făcut

Queen Elizabeth I is one of the Queens of England who
contributed to her country’s development, transforming it into a
global power, but she is also remembered for her oddity. This
beloved Queen reigned from 1558 to 1603 and proved that a woman can
rule a country at least as well as a man, giving her name to an era
– the Elizabethan era – marked by many successful episodes such as
defeating the Spanish Armada, by the growth of the fleet which
helped England to explore the world, or by the development and
flourishing of drama, poetry and music.
The last of the Tudors, Elizabeth I was the daughter of the
flamboyant King Henry VIII and of his second wife Anne Boleyn,
following in line her half sister Mary I also called ”Bloody Mary”
as a consequence of the cruelty with which she treats the
protestants – she executed many of them on behalf of her
religion. Elizabeth was born a protestant and consequently she
reestablished it as the national religion and this for her
subjects’ delight. She had learnt from her half sister that any
religious extremism could bring only troubles and so could a
marriage to the wrong prince. Consequently, she decided not to
marry stating that she was married to England, even if she fancied
some men in her life calling them names such as ”her spirit” or
”her eyes”.
Her people needed a strong queen who could fight the Spanish who
had claimed the throne as a result of the previous queen’s marriage
– Mary I had been married to phillip II of Spain – and who could
place England among the global powers of the world which conquered
new
territories and thus made their country prosperous. In order to
gain her subjects’ trust and to remind them of her successes,
Elizabeth used to have portraits painted such as the Coronation
portrait and the Armada portrait, which were taken across England
and presented to her subjects. The former was done just after her
coronation and showed her as a beautiful young girl but who was
able to be a respectful queen as she had wealth and power proved by
her rich gown, her crown and by the Orb and Scepter. The latter
portrait presents Elizabeth right after the glamorous victory
against the Spanish Armada and its King – phillip II of Spain. The
painting presents a rich Queen who rested her hand on the globe
suggesting the global power.

Furthermore, Elizabeth supported the sea exploration competing
with Spain by encouraging her sea-dogs to conquer new territories
from the icy waters of the North to the warm waters of Africa.
Francis Drake was the first Englishman who sailed around the world
and he and his sea-dogs were knighted by the Queen not only for
their expeditions, but also for stealing from the Spanish ships for
their Queen. The sea-dogs were a little better than pirates and it
is said that only Sir Francis Drake’s name alone was enough to
scare any Spanish.
England grew during Elizabeth’s reign not only in this respect,
but also from the cultural point of view. She supported music, arts
generally but the major contribution was in drama. Shakespeare’s
immortal work was written in those times and drama became part of
arts as it had not been considered one. Literature and arts in
general faced development and this great period of English culture
is called the Renaissance.
On the other hand, the ambitious stubborn and strong Queen had a
temper that everyone feared and she even punched and kicked her
secretary, she could ride a horse and speak in front of the
soldiers as well as any king giving them motivation to fight for
their Queen. She rarely traveled as she had many enemies but when
she did it, for instance in order to speak to her soldiers before
an important battle on the battlefields, she used to take her bed
with her.
All in all, Elizabeth I ended the House of Tudors but opened an
era of wealth and culture being loved and respected by her subjects
and not only. She can be considered the first monarch of a modern
England on its way to prosperity.

Treasure Hunt on dark landsprof. Raluca VesaColegiul Tehnic ”D.

The darkness came ... the wind of the end of October was
whistling through the trees near the school. On the school’s
hallways shrouded in darkness, the host teachers lit pumpkin
lanterns to create an atmosphere proper for the Halloween holiday
that was going to be celebrated that evening.
The students organizers were preparing for the arrival of the
participants.
They were disguising in scary monsters that were going to hide
in the high school to impede participants to reach the
treasure.
The game itself was the treasure hunt, search for clues hidden
throughout the high school (three color indices).
The participants were divided by lot in three groups of three,
then the three of each group were tied one to another with thread
to aggravate their movements and especially to keep them
together.
Ready? Now they extract the notes which will tell the first clue
and especially the colour that each group have to look for.
Nervousness…impatience…a little bit of fear, listening to the
environmental horror music which resounded on the hallways and the
thought of the monsters which were waiting to scare them.
And they started…The flashlights were lighting the ways of the
three groups, which started going to the first hint separately, one
group on the groundfloor, one on the third floor and one on the
first floor.

BABEL12
reciprocă a dorinţelor celuilalt.
Comunicarea personală presupune o creştere a competenţei
comunicaţionale a primitorului. Comunicarea socială presupune o
comunicare interpersonală şi o comunicare mediatică. Cele mai
uzitate medieri sunt cele de ordin lingvistic. Medierea

In November 1605, the infamous Gunpowder plot took place in
which some Catholics, most famously Guy Fawkes, plotted to blow up
James I, the first of the Stuart kings of England. The story is
remembered each November 5th when ‘Guys’ are burned in a
celebration known as ”Bonfire Night”.
When James VI of Scotland came to the English throne as James I,
the country was highly polarized along religious lines. The English
Reformation begun by Henry VIII had created a climate of religious
intolerance, and radicals of both the Roman Catholic and protestant
camps had high hopes that the new king would champion their cause.
Both sides were destined for disappointment; James was inclined
towards neither camp.
Disappointed by the failure of James I’s peace treaty
negotiations with Spain to improve their position, a handful of
young Catholic gentlemen from the Midlands, some of whom had been
involved in previous plotting, decided to take action.
At their center was the charismatic Warwickshire gentleman
Robert Catesby. In May 1604 he proposed a plan to blow up the King,
together with the House of Lords and the House of Commons during
the ceremonial opening of parliament. He had called his cousin,
Thomas Wintour, to the house of his
friend, Wright, in order to lay before them both his plan. With
the monarch, the prince of Wales and most of his leading ministers
dead, they would seize the young prince Charles and the princess
Elizabeth and raise a general revolt to return Catholicism to the
land. Thomas Wintour enlisted the help of a Yorkshire mercenary
named Guy Fawkes, also known as Guido Fawkes, the name he adopted
while fighting for the Spanish, a member of a group of provincial
English Catholics .
At first the men hired lodgings near the parliament buildings
and attempted to tunnel into the cellars of parliament. The tunnel
scheme was quickly abandoned, either because of the water from the
Thames seeping into the tunnel, or because the access proved too
difficult. Instead, Thomas percy used his influence to

gain access to cellars beneath parliament, and into these
cellars they secretly brought 36 barrels of gunpowder, which they
carefully hid.
The opening of parliament was put off, but Catesby used the time
to draw more men into the circle of conspirators, including Jesuit
leaders, while Fawkes made trips to the Low Countries for fresh
powder to replace that which was beginning to spoil.
On October 26, 1605, the whole conspiracy began to unravel. A
mysterious letter was sent to Lord Monteagle, a former Catholic
supporter, warning him not to attend the opening of parliament set
for November 5. Monteagle, however, at once passed the letter on to
Robert Cecil, the king’s chief secretary. The conspirators found
out about the letter, but still, they did not cancel their plans,
convinced that the government knew nothing. Fawkes checked the
undercroft on 30 October, and reported that nothing had been
disturbed. Monteagle’s suspicions had been aroused, however, and
the letter was shown to King James. The King ordered Sir Thomas
Knyvet to conduct a search of the cellars underneath the
parliament, which he did in the early hours of 5 November. Guy
Fawkes, who was in the cellar of the parliament with the 36 barrels
of gunpowder when the authorities stormed in the early hours of
November 5th, was caught. Robert Cecil tried to blame the Jesuits
for the plot, as that would generate support for his anti-Catholic
policies.
Fawkes revealed his true identity on 7 November, and told his
interrogators that there were five people involved in the plot to
kill the King. He began to reveal their names on 8 November, and
told how they intended to place princess Elizabeth on the throne.
The trial of eight of the plotters began on Monday 27 January 1606.
On January 30
four of the conspirators were put to death in St. paul’s
churchyard. The following day the remaining four were executed at
the Old palace Yard, Westminster. All eight men were hung, drawn,
and quartered, that being the standard punishment for those
convicted of treason. Catesby and his fellows who had died at
Holbeche House were exhumed and their heads placed on pikes for
public display. Fawkes was the last to stand on the scaffold. He
asked for forgiveness of the King and state, while keeping up his
”crosses and idle ceremonies”.
On 5 November 1605 Londoners were encouraged to celebrate the
King’s escape from assassination by lighting bonfires. Londoners
immediately began lighting bonfires in celebration that the plot
had failed, and a few months later parliament declared November 5 a
public day of thanksgiving. Guy Fawkes Day, also known as Bonfire
Night, has been around in one form or another ever since. Guy
Fawkes Day festivities soon spread as far as the American colonies,
where they became known as pope Day. In Britain Guy Fawkes Day
became a time to get together with friends and family, set off
fireworks, light bonfires, attend parades and burn effigies of
Fawkes. Children traditionally wheeled around their effigies
demanding a ”penny for the Guy” (a similar custom to Halloween
trick-or-treating) and imploring crowds to ”remember, remember the
fifth of November.”
It’s unclear if the conspirators would ever have been able to
pull off their plan to blow up the parliament even if they had not
been betrayed. Some have suggested that the gunpowder itself was so
old as to be useless. Since Guy Fawkes and the other conspirators
got caught before trying to ignite the powder, we’ll never know for
certain.

variety and choice, creating an attractive and interactive learning
environment. The widespread of the computers has changed our lives,
imposing growing demands on both teachers and learners to become
technologically literate.
During the last years, in a new millennium, new and creative
possibilities appeared. The internet has
been considered as ”the most significant development in
communication tools since the invention of the printing press” (D.
Teeler & p.Gray 2000). It is a global communications system
which consists of a network of people and information
interconnected by telephone lines linked to computers. The
information on this network can be transmitted through different
application programs such as e-mail and the World Wide Web. A
remote computer (server) stores the information and sends it to the
user over the telephone line, only at a click of the mouse.
There has been much controversy over the use of computers and
the Internet in English language teaching during the last decade.
The techniques offered, the activities and the degree of
application in the EFL teaching syllabus have undergone a number of
serious changes along with the evolution of technology. The
computer and the Internet have evolved from the status of ”tutor”
to that of ”tool”. The Internet is considered a tool as it provides
tools for acquiring and learning a foreign language. The large
number of websites,

pictures, audio and video materials are all tools in the
teaching and learning process. The methodology of language teaching
has developed new ways of using the Internet with its numerous
multimedia resources which offer an authentic learning environment.
As it combines listening with seeing, skills can easily be
integrated in the teaching – learning process; reading, writing,
listening, speaking can be blended within integrated skills
lessons.
Above all, the Internet brings variety and stimulation. Students
will enjoy learning the English language and literature in a new
and challenging way, not just by interacting with the teacher and
studying the textbook.
In our country, the use of computers and the Internet in
education continues to
increase at extraordinary speed. All schools are equipped with
computer laboratories connected to the Internet and new demands are
being made on teachers to use the available technology
appropriately. Even though language laboratories are still very
rare due to higher costs, the English language teacher can always
make use of the school’s computer lab whose resources may be
exploited within any class.
However, there are many components of the Internet technology
which have not reached their full potential in the English language
class, namely the audio and video resources, due to either
insufficient knowledge of the pedagogical implications of their use
or lack of self-confidence on the teachers’ part.

Buon viaggio a ”Caput Mundi”!

begin to turn a profit, thus going from being ”in the red” to
being ”in the black”. Accountants use black to signify profit when
recording each day’s book entries. Red is used to mean loss.
Another theory refers to a negative connotation of the
phenomenon. One of the earliest uses of the phrase in American
history was to refer to the collapse of the United States gold
market on Sept. 24, 1869. The ”Black ___day” phrasing has also
traditionally been used to refer to stock market crashes, such as
Black Tuesday on
Oct. 29, 1929 and Black Monday on Oct. 19. 1987.
In 1939, during the Great Depression, Thanksgiving happened to
fall during the fifth week of November. Retailers warned they would
go bankrupt because the holiday shopping season was too short. They
petitioned president Franklin D. Roosevelt to move the Thanksgiving
holiday up to the fourth Thursday.
Media reports from 1966 reveal that police officers in
philadelphia first referred to the day after Thanksgiving as ”Black
Friday” because of the increased traffic jams and large amounts of
pedestrian traffic in the city’s shopping

Thanksgiving Day in the United States which is on the fourth
Thursday of November. It is not an official holiday but it is
regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season when
most shops offer promotional sales. There are plenty of rumours
about how the day of sales first got its name - but which one is
true?
The term ”Black Friday” is a direct linguistic descendent of ”in
the black,” accounting jargon for turning a profit. This day
represents the point in the year when retailers

district. For philadelphia police, bus drivers, cab drivers, and
others who tried to control and navigate the shopping hordes, the
day was bleak – and, therefore, ”black.”
Black Friday is a long day, with many retailers opening up at 5
am or even earlier to hordes of people waiting anxiously outside
the windows. There have been reports of violence occurring between
shoppers on Black Friday. It is not unusual for shoppers to camp
out in front of the stores in an effort to secure a place in front
of the line and consequently more chances of acquiring cheap
products. It seems
the police have a right to call Black Friday by a negative name.
The worst Black Friday occurred in 2008 when a man was trampled to
death as 2,000 people broke down the doors of a Walmart in New
York.
Black Friday is a bad day for employers, too because everyone
calls in sick to go shopping. In the 1950s, people began calling in
sick the day after Thanksgiving, essentially giving themselves a
four-day weekend. Since stores were open, as were most businesses,
those pretending could also get a head start on their holiday
shopping - as long as the boss didn’t see them. Rather
than try to determine whose pay should be cut, and who was
legitimately sick, many businesses started adding that day as
another paid holiday.
The sale day has caused a number of controversies over various
practices. The employers make unreasonable demands on staff,
including requiring them to work, often long shifts, during
Thanksgiving. There are also safety risks involved due to
insufficient staff for crowd management. Some retailers are
suspected of selling ”derivative” products, lower in quality,
manufactured just for Black Friday.
