Welcome to NEW College’s Prospectus 2013. We are delighted that you areconsidering applying to study with us. This prospectus is designed to help youmake important choices in what will be the next crucial step in your education.We are sure that, as you find out more about the College, you will appreciatejust how much we have to offer and how we can help you to achieve yourgoals in life.

NEW College provides a distinctive and very special student experience. Our number onepriority is teaching and learning, and so we expect it to be yours too. Despite havingaround 1900 students, we pride ourselves on valuing you as individuals and responding toyour needs. Because NEW College is larger than most school sixth forms, the range ofsubjects that you can study and variety of activities we can offer is wider. As a student atNEW College you will be treated as a young adult and supported in every step in yourlearning journey.Talking to past and present students is a very good way for you to find out what life at NEWCollege is about and will certainly help explain why we are so popular. One important reasonfor our popularity and reputation is our examination results. We are consistently the topperforming A-Level institution across the Wakefield district. Additionally, we are proud of theprogress our students make at A-Level compared with their GCSE results. This measureputs us in the top 25% nationally of all sixth form providers. These results allow our studentsto move onto the next stage of their careers both well qualified and confident.

At NEW College we offer a wide range of Advanced Level courses. The advantage offollowing an A-Level programme is that you are able to keep your options open andnot specialise or go down a particular route before you are ready.Alternatively, if you already know which subject you would like to specialise in, you shouldconsider one of our BTEC Extended Diplomas (3 A Level equivalent) or combine the two.The combination of subjects you choose is very important as your future aspirations andinterests could depend on them.

AS/A Level Entry RequirementsThe college minimum entry requirement is five GCSE passes at grade C or above, from fourdifferent subject areas. They must include a GCSE grade C, or higher in Mathematics or English.Some A-Level subjects carry a specific entry requirement which is highlighted in the subjectsection of the prospectus.

BTEC Entry RequirementsThis is the same as A-Level entry requirements except that you have to have a minimum of fourGCSE passes at grade C as opposed to five. Some do have specific entry requirements whichcan be found in the subject section of the prospectus.

NEW College Learning PathwaysWhen you join us you will be given advice and guidance about the number of subjects and thecombination of subjects most appropriate for your individual career and university goals, andyour achievements so far. We call these Learning Pathways and they are described in thetable below.

The first questions you should ask yourself:

Do I prefer coursework or exams or a combination of both?Do I have a career in mind that requires particular subjects?

Programmes of Study/Planned Learning Hours

All students must enrol on to a programme of study that incorporates a minimumof 540 planned learning hours. Students will not be accepted on programmes

less than 540 hours. Student programmes will also contain an element of work experience

and/or employability skills.

At NEW College we offer one-year Intermediate (Level 2) courses. These allowstudents to improve on the grades gained in Year 11 and/or fill any gaps in theirqualifications.

A large percentage of our Level 2 students move onto AS Level courses on completionof a successful one-year Intermediate programme.

The above pathway can be accessed only if a student's behaviour, attendance andreport are satisfactory. Ultimately the decision to allow a student to progress to aLevel 3 programme will be at the Vice Principals discretion.

Your Progress Tutor will support you in theearly weeks of settling into college life, andwill help you adjust to the new challenges inmanaging work, prioritising tasks anddeveloping study skills. Later on, your tutor will provide guidanceand support as you plan for progressionfrom College to the next stage, whether thisis university, an internship, gap year oremployment. Your relationship with yourtutor will be key to ensuring you get thevery best out of College life and engagewith it fully.Your Progress Tutor will deliver an inductiontutorial programme which will cover manyaspects of College life in order to supportyou as you settle into College. You will getan opportunity to meet your Progress Tutorbefore you start NEW College by joining usfor our Induction Day that takes place in thesummer term.Tutorial sessions held once a week will be amixture of one-to-one interviews andimportant relevant topics, such as social andcareer related issues.In offering you this we hope that we cancontinue to help you grow as a person andprepare you for life after College, whether thatbe work, training or university.

Progress Tutors

NEW College encourages all Year 12students to participate in the WorkExperience Programme. For some studentsit will be essential to complete workexperience to meet entry requirements, asset by the Higher Education Providers.For others it may be an integral part ofthe course. Here at NEW College youwill be given support before, during andafter your placement to ensure youhave a successful experience in asafe, relevant and friendlyenvironment.

“The work experience programme atPontefract NEW College is outstanding. I wasgiven the opportunity to work at UptonPrimary School and Ash Grove PrimarySchool, which were both excellent. The staffwere friendly and thechildren at bothschools were adelight toteach, and Iwas givenrelevantand useful

opportunities to work with small groups andwith a range of year groups. I can definitelysay that this experience has encouraged meto follow this career path even more so!”

Higher Education &the World of WorkThe Careers Team at NEW Collegeencourage students to research theiroptions and support them along the way inrealising their potential and ambitions. A large number of NEW College studentsprogress to Higher Education each year.

Progress Tutors and our Careers Advisersare able to guide you through this process.We also work hard to support our studentswho may be seeking employment orapprenticeships after studying at College.At our Higher Education InformationEvening for Parents we discuss theapplications process and the financialimplications of studying at university.  Tosupport students who may be consideringapplying to either Oxford or CambridgeUniversity we have a specially designedprogramme encouraging students andsupporting them through the applicationprocess. We have excellent links andpartnerships with universities. In the summer we hold an annualProgression Day with over 60 speakersfrom local universities and employers.We support our students seekingemployment with application formpreparation, CV writing and interviewpractice. We advertise suitable vacanciesand apprenticeships.Students are able to seek careers advicefive days a week  from our experiencedand professionally qualified CareersAdvisers.

Study SupportThe Study Support Team aims to help studentsmaximise their educational achievements duringtheir time at NEW College.  The welcoming and professional tutors will giveyou individual help with any aspect of yourstudies.  The service is open to all students,whatever your target grade.  Students oftenseek help with study skills, writing skills andGCSE Maths and English.Support is provided in small groups, ‘one toone’ or in-class, according to the needs andwishes of the student.We actively promote a policy of inclusion, sospecialist support is available for students withhealth problems or disabilities, such as cerebralpalsy, autism and dyslexia.  Our provision oftenincludes access arrangements for examinations,such as extra time and the use of computers.  Itis very important that you disclose anydisabilities or difficulties on your collegeapplication so we can plan in advance to meetyour needs.

CounsellingWe offer a confidential counselling service thatoffers you the space and time to think and talkabout specific problems and for us to thinktogether about difficulties you are having. TheCollege counselling team also offers guidance onrelaxation techniques.  Counselling is a skilledway of helping you to focus on your concernsand developmental issues, while at the sametime exploring specific problems, makingchoices, coping with crises, working throughfeelings of conflict and improving relationshipswith others. 

The counselling service is available fromMonday- Friday, 9 - 4pm, situated in theHealth Point. We also have our very own team of StudentsOffering Support (SOS), a group of friendlystudents who are trained in listening skills.They are available if you would like aninformal chat, collect information or needpractical help with college or other problems.

College InternshipsAt NEW  College we offer a variety of selectinternships to our students. Internships aresimilar to work experience placements butare actually based within the College. Theseare likely to take place within departmentareas and are at set times on a weekly basise.g. one morning or afternoon per week.Examples of some of the Internships we offerinclude working in the Learning ResourceCentre, Administration, IT, Media, PerformingArts  Technician, Sport and much more.Our prestigious Internships are seen toprovide potential employees with valuableand appropriate experience.More information regarding NEW Collegeinternships will be available to you once youstart in September.

Employability skillsAt NEW  College we take your next stepsvery seriously. We are ultimately responsiblefor ensuring after your two years with us younot only have the necessary qualifications toprogress but also the invaluableemployability skills in order for you to step into the world of work pre or post university.As part of your tutorial programme, which isdelivered by your progress tutor, you willbuild up numerous employability skills toprepare you for future employment. At NEWCollege we constantly work with employersso that we can ensure you have developedthe skills they are looking for.Having the right employability skills can bethe difference between you being successfulin the world of work or not!

Financial Support-16-19 Bursary FundThe Bursary Fund is for students aged16-19 and is a payment of moneyprovided to support students in theirlearning. The allowance is means-testedand students may be eligible if totalhousehold assessed income is £20,000 orbelow.If you think you are eligible to receivefinancial support through the 16-19Bursary Fund, applications are availablefrom our Student Reception or can bedownloaded from the College websitewww.ncpontefract.ac.ukStudent attendance will be checkedweekly, with payment being made halftermly in arrears. • Both your Progress Tutor and subject teachers will review your progress on a monthly basis and together you will agree targets to ensure motivation, direction and a clear plan of action to keep you on track and improving.

• Monthly progress monitoring will focus on your achievement and your attendance in each of your subjects.

Directed College life differs in some important waysfrom school life, and this is no doubt partlywhy you are interested in joining us.

To start with, there are no uniforms and nobells, and you are encouraged to use stafffirst names.Another key difference is the time you willhave when you are not in class. This isknown as your ‘directed time’ as there is anexpectation that you will manage a balancebetween meeting friends and studying in oneof our Learning Zones.

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC)

This is an all-in-one centre combining thefunction of a library (book lending, audio-visual material, newspapers etc) and aLearning Resource Centre (lots of differenttypes of electronic material).The LRC is also the home of our StudySupport team. If you need additional supportwith your studies, the LRC is the place to be!

The Open Access Learning Zone (A8)

There are several computer rooms availablefor students to use for extra study; however,the Open Access Learning Zone in A Block isthe biggest, housing 65 computers in oneroom. You can drop in at any time andcomputers will be available for you to use.

The Open access Apple MacComputer Suite

This open access computer room is available toall Photography, Media, Art, Design, FilmStudies and Textiles students on a drop-in-basis.

Teacher Access Periods

All subjects will publish a timetable whereteachers will be available to provide additionalsupport or catch-up sessions. These caneither be one-to-one sessions or larger groupsessions.10

Visit NEW College for the day in Year 10 and experience a College Taster Day.(Not all schools.)

Attend a presentation (assembly) by NEW College at your school. Obtain acopy of our prospectus. (Not all schools.)

Read the prospectus/website and start to consider the courses you are interestedin. (Remember some subjects are assessed by exams and some are assessed bycoursework.)

Attend one of our two Open Events which is strongly recommended –students and parents are very welcome. Opportunities to listen to a shortpresentation by the Principal and speak to subject staff and students.

Saturday 19 October 2013 - 10am-2pmThursday 21 November 2013 - 5pm-8.30pm

Fill in the on-line application form using ‘UCAS  Progress’ (awaitconfirmation/receipt of your application). If you are unable to access this, thenplease use a college paper application form.

In the months of January through to April, you will receive a letter through thepost inviting you to attend an interview. If all goes well you will be offered aconditional place at the College dependent on your GCSE results.

You will then receive a letter through the post inviting you to attend an InductionDay after your final GCSE exams in July. Here, you will spend some time in thesubjects you have chosen to study. The focus of this day is to prepare you for yourfuture time at the College.

GCSE Results Day August 2014. If you do not get the GCSEs you require,please come into college after collecting your results to discuss your optionswith our staff.

In order for you to complete the final stage of applying to NEW College, you willneed to attend our Enrolment Day. It is important that you bring proof of yourqualifications in order to enrol at the College.

A Level ICT takes a look at all forms oftechnology used to create, store,exchange and use information. Itconsiders the impact of ICT on societyand encourages students to predict howit might affect the future. The course issplit between 40% practical and 60%theory, so although some software skillswill be delivered, the majority of the workis theoretical and focused on the finalexaminations (2¼hrs in Yr12 and 2½hrsin Yr13) . Music is rewarding - it is rated very highlyby universities. It has the highest number oftransferable skills of any A Level. It is activeand motivational inside and out of theclassroom. Your GCSE will prepare you forA Level Music – but you might want tostudy further after A Level, so we ask you tobe fluent in notation.

The Visual Arts department at NEWcollege offers students the opportunityto be creative, and develop theirindependent working skills in an excitingand supportive environment. Topics you will cover:As part of this course you will explore a widerange of media, materials and ideas beforedeciding a specialism. This exploratory phasewill develop your drawing skills, creativity andvisual thinking. After you have worked through the exploratoryphase of the course you will pick one of fourspecialisms to work within. You will producework designed to show your skills in this areaand build a portfolio for interviews.

Specialism will fall in to one of thefollowing areas:

Fine art: painting, drawing, 3D, sculpture,photography, print, video, installation.Visual communication: graphic design,illustration, photography animation,printing, Textiles: fashion, surface pattern,costume design, embroidery3D: sculpture, interior design, furniture,architecture

There will be a week long Paris residentialthat will expose you to a large range ofartwork and ideas. The course will conclude with a final majorproject and exhibition of your work. This willtake 10 weeks and will be in your chosenspecialism.

Students and staff at NEW College,Pontefract celebrated another year ofoutstanding exam results.

Already an established provider ofacademic excellence, this year, despite awell-publicised “toughening up” of the A-Level “gold standard”, students at thecollege achieved results giving an overallpass rate of 99%, a high grade rate of46% and an A* to C rate of 74%.Well over half of all A-Level subjectsoffered achieved a pass rate of 100%.At AS level, the halfway point in a student’sA-Level programme, the pass rate at highgrade rate soared to its highest level ever,placing it well above the national average,and securing the College’s reputation as atop provider of post-16 education andqualifications.NEW College’s Principal, Pauline Hagen,said: “Once again, it is students and staffwho have provided these fantasticstatistics, which reflect so well on theCollege. We are very proud of them andgrateful to their parents who support usso well.These results not only represent theculmination of 2 years of hard work andcommitment; they also enable our talentedstudents to progress to the bestuniversities and to fulfilling careers.
