Dear Volunteers, Did you know that, according to a 2018 survey conducted by the Keiser Family Foundation, 22% of adults struggle with chronic loneliness in United States? That is more than all the adults who smoke or who have diabetes! People struggling with such loneliness seem to have a greater risk of cardiovascular diseases, dementia, fragmented sleep, depression and the list goes on and on. Given all the curfews, lockdowns and social isolation brought about by the COVID-19 crisis, a lot more individuals are now experiencing loneliness, particularly the elderly population. This is affecting not only their mental, but also physical health. Given the harmful potential of this pandemic, we wanted to look into how we can all live more connected lives virtually. Therefore, in this issue of our newsletter, we've put together a list of COVID – 19 resources that would address those goals. It is our hope that these ideas and resources from our community partners will reduce loneliness and reignite that sense of purpose, especially for the more vulnerable populations.

Please take a moment to look through the list of resources presented herein and share them with your

families and friends. We want to continue enriching your lives, as you have and continue to enrich the

lives of others by being the most compassionate volunteers and supporters.

At the same time, we will continue conducting our regular wellness checks with our dedicated

volunteers to let them know they are in our minds and hearts during these difficult times. As you may

know, our wellness check initiative is conducted over the phone to meet our volunteers needs through

relevant resources and information.

We will also continue sending birthday cards to our volunteers to share with them our warmest

wishes, brighten their days and hopefully bring a smile among all the hardship this pandemic has

caused. We may be apart but we're still standing together against it all.

Please know that, as always, our team is working hard to have a better understanding of your needs

and concerns; so feel free to contact us via email and/or phone at any time. We really do appreciate

your feedback.

Wishing you a safe, peaceful day!

Police Senior Roll Call Lifeline Program

The Senior Roll Call Lifeline is a free program provided by New Castle County that calls the homes of its subscribers every day to ensure the welfare of its elderly residents, many of whom live alone. Daily phone calls are made to those enrolled to make sure they are doing well and do not require emergency assistance. If after several attempts the calls are unsuccessful, a call is given to the individual that you designate to check on your wellbeing. In emergencies, police are immediately dispatched to your residence. If you answer and need help, police are dispatched immediately. To learn more about the program and participate, or to sign up a loved one, please call the New Castle County Police Community Services Senior Roll Call Line at 302-395-8159 or visit: https://nccde.org/478/Police-Senior-Roll-Call-Lifeline-Program.

Volunteers serve as friends, mentors and role models, helping children (who are primarily from single-parent homes) gain greater self-confidence. Big Brother and Big Sister Mentors encourage their Little Brother or Sister to realize their potential and see themselves as having happy and successful futures.. Big Brother and Big Sister mentors have influenced the lives of over one million children in thousands of communities across the nation, including those in Delaware. Each Big Brother Big Sister relationship is carefully administered and supported by rigorous standards and trained personnel. BBBS staff strives for matches that are not only safe and suited to the child’s needs, but also harmonious and built to last. That’s why we take such care in selecting volunteers, orienting them, and matching them with children. But BBBS staff are more than just matchmakers. We provide ongoing support and supervision to the Big, Little, and the Little’s family. The Volunteer receives training to assist them in developing their relationship with their little brother or sister. Volunteer Opportunities: • Mentor – Volunteers are needed to work with individual children from single parent families, helping them

with school work, providing support and motivation and helping them with any issues that may arise. • Special Projects Volunteer – Volunteers are needed to assist with community program activities for mentors

Immediate Grants Available to Delaware Nonprofits Affected by COVID-19 Delaware COVID-19 Strategic Response Fund grants to be awarded weekly

Delaware nonprofits affected by COVID-19 are invited to apply for grants from the Delaware COVID-19 Strategic Response Fund, housed at the Delaware Community Foundation and directed by a council of Delaware’s philanthropic leaders. The application continues to be open at delcf.org/covid-grants. Nonprofits are encouraged to reapply weekly. The maximum grant request is $50,000. In the first week, a total of $250,000 will be awarded. The total amount to be awarded is expected to increase in subsequent weeks, depending on funding available. Grants from the Strategic Response Fund will initially focus on urgent needs related to COVID-19, then expand over time to more structural and long-term needs in three funding areas: • Front-Line Grants fund nonprofits encountering increased demand for services due to COVID-19. This

includes services to people who are financially vulnerable, homeless and facing health challenges. • Service-Challenged Grants fund nonprofits that need assistance modifying their service delivery models

extremely rapidly due to COVID-19. • Collateral Damage Grants fund nonprofits facing extreme difficulty because of lost revenue due to

closures, cancellations and other challenges related to COVID-19. Applications will be accepted weekly on a rolling basis and grants will be awarded weekly for as long as funding is available and community needs exist related to COVID-19. Each week, applications received by noon on Monday will be reviewed, grantees will be selected Friday morning, and funds will be transferred Friday afternoon.
