With the way the battlefi eld has evolved over the last ten years, the soldier’s equipment has had to evolve accordingly. Although the media often show the US Army Boys right in the heart of the fi ghting in Afghanistan, and up until recently in Iraq, their equipment, materiel and weapons have never been shown in detail. This book has now done this, drawing up an exhaustive list of the equipment used by the US Army’s infantryman (but also the helicopter pilots and the armoured vehicle drivers)– from the boots to the wrist computer, via the assault rifl e and the winter uniform – and the programmes intended to make the soldier even quicker, even more effective and better protected.

L’auteurA weapons and military history enthusiast, a marksman for 26 years, and a former French army offi cer, Aurélien Morel was the head of the technical service specialising in weapons for the Police at a national level for ten years. He has already published the M4 Carbine with Histoire et Collections.

DATE OF RELEASE October 2012AUTHOR(S) J-L PerquinRELATION(S) World War TwoSERIES RésistanceWRITTEN IN Français

This second volume of the collection Resistance is devoted to the parachuting and picking up of agents, from 1940 to 1944. It is a gripping frieze of these operations and a vigorous tribute to those heroes of the resistance whom the author describes here, using both his extensive personal documentation, connections among the veterans and many museum conservators throughout Europe. The reconstitution is rigorous and the information precise about both material and methods, and the wealth of pictures will live up to the expectations of most enlightened amateurs. But above all, each reader can discover the personal life stories more intimately, from the training exercises in England awaiting departure, to the sacrifi ces made so freely in carrying out the missions.

How did so few men manage to organise resistance networks and gather so much intelligence in such a short time despite being unceasingly hunted by the German and Vichy counter-espionage services? It is thought that 70% of the information which was vital for the Allies before the Normandy landings in 1944 was sent by French agents working for the BCRA.Using very often unpublished or ignored documents, the author gives an account of General de Gaulle’s secret services which, in 1940, were thought to be just a small group of amateurs but which as the war progressed, became a powerful war machine in the service of the Free French.

the AuthorPascal Le Pautremat, a Doctor of Contemporary History, gives lectures in Geopolitics after being responsible for studies at the Centre d’Etudes d’Histoire de la Défense, and has specialised in contemporary crisis and confl icts.

Between February and March 1943 Ukraine’s second town, Kharkov, was the scene of a fi erce struggle between the Red Army and Axis troops. Feeling optimistic after the Stalingrad triumph, Stalin thought that his adversaries were in full fl ight. But Feldmarschall von Manstein kept a cool head. Thanks to the SS-Panzerkorps which had just been created, he planned a counteroffensive. In mid-February the SS army corps managed to extricate itself from Kharkov with great diffi culty and a few days later launched the great counterattack. In three weeks the Red army found itself in full retreat and with great diffi culty managed to get out of the grips of the enemy who demonstrated its great mastery of the war of movement. The SS recaptured Kharkov a month after losing it but by doing so probably deprived von Manstein of an even greater victory. The situation stabilised with the thaw leaving both adversaries completely exhausted. Although the situation had changed in favour of the Allies, the Eastern Front now included new protagonists – the Waffen-SS armoured units on whom Hitler was counting to work some miracles and defeat his mortal enemy.

The author : Philippe Naud is Professor of History and a specialist of the Eastern Front. He is the author of numerous articles in VaeVictis, Steelmasters and Tank Zone magazines.

Towards the end of the Great War, the United States Army started to distinguish its units with cloth shoulder insignia. From 1941, due to the terrifi c expansion of its numbers, these multi-coloured shoulder patches became more numerous and contributed to the spirit of the new units. This guide illustrates in full colour the insignia worn by Army units, in Europe, Asia and the Pacifi c, together with a brief history and the main variations.

This publication covers the chronological evolution of uniforms, equipment and weaponry issued to the American soldier during the fi rst years of the confl ict, from 1962 to 1967 (a second volume will cover the 1968 to 1975 period). All of the uniforms and equipment shown are period, however some of the weapons are replicas. In the aim of depicting characteristic servicemen at given periods, a great deal of research was undertaken in order to guarantee coherence between the units, dates and geographical situations. Differing from other publications, the author has deliberately chosen to illustrate all types of service personnel rather than solely combatants in order to give an exact presentation of the American military during this period. Indeed, it should be remembered that 85% of service personnel in Vietnam were support troops and advisors.

The Citroen “Traction Avant” called to the coloursBuilt in 1934, André Citroen’s legendary car had a rich and stunning career due to the events which plunged the world into war fi ve years later. Thousands of them joined the French Army during the Phoney War then went through the trials and tribulations of war.Very much in spite of itself, the “Traction” (front wheel drive) changed sides and the Germans, who had a particular taste for it, used them all throughout Europe. By the end of 1942 it was once again serving under French colours, this time engaged successfully in the Tunisian Campaign, appearing there in strange armoured versions. Then it was the Liberation of France, the time of the Maquis, white stars and the three letters “FFI” which proliferated all over the bodywork. Citroen’s marvel became one of the symbols of France’s rebirth.A complete visual epic using exceptional documentation: 250 period photos, plus more than 25 colour profi les showing authentic military markings. THE book all Citroen Traction Avant buffs and all amateurs of automobile and military history have been waiting for.

An ocean for a battlefi eld. The extraordinary epic of the M4 Sherman in the Pacifi c theatre of operations is described here using carefully chosen photos. Indeed for many, nothing looks more like a Sherman than another Sherman. This book gives the reader the opportunity to see the real change the famous American tank underwent, from its fi rst and disastrous engagement on the bloody atoll of Tarawa, to Okinawa, the last forward bastion of the Empire of the Rising Sun. The reader can thus chronologically follow the various transformations the Sherman went through after that terrible experience under fi re, against an enemy who was as courageous as he was fanatical.

Nearly 350 photos, thirty or so profi les relating to some of the shots, and maps of each battle, all illustrate with great visual quality this work which is intended for all Sherman afi cionados.

L’auteurRaymon Giuliani, is both a great specialist of WWII armour and kits, and was for several years the editor of the “Steelmasters” and “Tank Zone” magazines

The Jeep in the French ArmyVol. 1 1942-1950, from Tunisia to Indochina

Designed in less than six months a short while before the United States entered the war in December 1941, in all 650 000 jeeps were built of which almost 175 000 were delivered to the Allied armies as part of the Lend-Lease agreement. The Free French paratroopers were the fi rst to use jeeps – during the Special Air Service raids in the Western Desert. But it was from April 1943 onwards that the jeeps starting arriving in droves in the ports at Algiers and Casablanca as part of the re-armament agreements. These funny little cars won over the French with their good handling and their ability to get over the worst obstacles.Wherever the French army was, there were the jeeps. They transported top brass, carried radios, were equipped with automatic or anti-tank weapons, evacuated casualties from the battle zones over diffi cult terrain. They were equipped with loudspeakers to harangue the crowds and the technicians even thought of getting them to do mine detecting. Other builders thought they could replace them but they failed. They just had to build them under licence until

they just disappeared after sixty years of loyal service

In April 1941, two months prior to operation ‘Barbarossa,’ Adolf Hitler ordered the development of a heavy tank, armed with the famed 88 mm gun. This tank became a legend in its own time. Feared by its adversaries and liked by its crews, the Tiger etched its mark in history and the legend carries on, 60 years after the end of the war. This compilation of the two volumes dealing with Tiger units on the Eastern front, the Western front, and Africa, features almost a thousand period pictures, mostly unpublished, and more than 80 full-colour plates by the author: tank profi les, details of markings and insignia, camoufl age, and a short history of each Tiger unit. This edition has been revised and augmented, with more accurate captions as to dates and locale, together with new illustrations and a chapter on additional units.

The purpose of this book is to collect, in an easily readable form, the basic technical data that concem the British army as engaged in the North-West European campaign between 6th June 1944 and 8th May 1945. The author’ s aim has been to include as much information as possible, without making any daim to exhaustivity, along clear and simple guidelines. Special emphasis has been given to the organisation of units, a key element in the correct understanding of other chapters. Those readers who have an interest in contemporary history will thus have within their easy reach a reference to data which, if frequently referred to, are rarely made explicit in historical works, to which «The British Tommy» brings but a complement. Even though this book is not meant for their sole use, the collectors, reenactment groups, modellers or simple «militaria» enthusiasts should find here basic documents in the form of articles. If this handbook - as it is to be considered - should find even a modest place in the impressive bibliography devoted to the armies which fought on the same front, then this long and patient research will be fully justified.

The AuthorJean Bouchery is a specialist of 1944-1945 and as such he is one of the regular authors for the specialised press, especially Militaria Magazine and has taken part in a number of works published by Histoire et Collections.

The Battle of Hattin, Saladin’s greatest victory, and the subsequent conquest of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, marked the end of the fi rst period of Frankish occupation of the Holy Land. Only the survival of Tyre enabled the territories to be re-conquered during the Third Crusade in which Philip-Augustus and especially Richard the Lionheart distinguished themselves. But a page had been turned, and the legacy of the conquerors of 1099 was well and truly lost. This work gives in detail the causes, the circumstances and the consequences of the Crusaders’ most terrible defeat.

Fought on 19 May 1643 between the French army of the Duc d’Enghien and the Spanich army under Francisco de Melo, Rocroi is probably one of the most controversial battles in the long period of conflict between the kingdoms of France and Spain. The numerous sources, be they official accounts, memoirs, or correspondence, most often contradict each other.

The principal controversy of this battle, far from being anecdotal, concerns the French right flank, placed under the direct command of Louis II de Bourbon, the Duc d’Enghien. The version generally accepted by historians of French sources affirms that the cavalry of Gassion overthrew and quickly pushed back the first Spanish companies, eventually defeating them. However, Spanish sources, defended by historians beyond the Pyrenees, contend that the cavalry of the Duc d’Albuquerque, opposing that of Gassion and Enghien, broke through the squadrons and two infantry regiments of the French advanced guard on two occasions! Thus, there exist today two battles of Rocroi: the one found in Spanish works and the one found in numerous French works.

Reconstructing a global vision of the battle remains a delicate undertaking. For this reason and to avoid any dubious interpreta-tion, it seemed necessary to Stephane Thion to include numerous quotations to illustrate the unfolding of this battle.

A great study with splendid military paintings and pictures.

That association of mountainous territories shut in among the European powers, Switzerland solved part of its fi nancial problems as early as the Renaissance by developing a truly mercenary industry. Each canton could sign a contract (a capitulation) to recruit military units with their own offi cers and regulations in exchange for pay and equipment for a neighbouring state. On the eve of the Revolution there were therefore Swiss units in the government guards or the troops of the Line in France, the Italian States, Spain and the United Provinces. The revolutionary process in France ran up against their loyalty to their employer: the King, and the sad events of the massacre of the Swiss Guard on 10 August 1792 whereas the Swiss regiments of the Line were disbanded.During the vast European reorganisation led by France between 1793 and 1813, Switzerland was politically and geographically transformed and furnished its big neighbour whether it liked it or not with troops of great worth who upheld their favourite motto “Honneur et Fidélité”.A lot has already been written on the Swiss regiments. The book skims over the Swiss troops in service with the King on the eve of the Revolution to concentrate on those who served the Republic, the Consulate and then the Empire, focusing on less well-known aspects.

Germany was not only the first country to get a jet aircraft to fly but above all it was the only country fighting in World War Two to mass produce and above all engage several types of aircraft using this new kind of powerplant in the fighting, thus opening the way for air warfare as we know it nowadays. This new volume in the collection “Planes and Pilots”, which wittingly ignores the myriad of jet aircraft projects which the Germans thought up all during the war most of which never got beyond the drawing board, only deals with the machines which were built in enough numbers to be used operationally. The Messerschmitt Me 163 rocket-fighter, more dangerous for its pilots than for its opponents; the twin-engined Arado 234, better at reconnaissance than at bombing which was its intended role; the Heinkel He 162, the People’s Fighter, built in record time but arriving too late to prove the effectiveness of its design; and above all the Messerschmitt Me 262 - the real star among the German fighters during the last year of the war and whose tally of kills gives a glimpse of the real impact on the course of the war it might have had, had its development not been so considerably delayed by innumerable technical problems and, for a while, by crass strategic errors.

The Authors : Dominique Breffort, the editor of Wingmasters magazine, has put all his historian’s application and his 30 year’s knowledge of the subject into this book for the pleasure of the enthusiasts. André Jouineau, the profi le artist, has set himself up over these last years as one of the foremost specialists in this domain

Although it was originally intended to provide the USAF with a lightweight fi ghter, in the end the Northrop F-5 had rather a marginal career in the United States, which used it mainly for training pilots in aerial combat. On the other hand it was a real success in the export market, with more than twenty countries around the world choosing this little effective twin-engined fi gh-ter which above all was cheap, particularly when it was partly subsidized by the United States. Its success continued with the improved version, the Tiger II, so much so that in all more than 2 600 examples of all versions of the F-5 came of the production lines with a few of them still fl ying nowadays in some air forces, thanks to the various update programmes which have permitted air forces to envisage prolonging their use until 2015-20.

The D version of the Mirage 2000 is France’s own two-seat conventional all-weather ground attack assault aircraft, which was brought out at the end of the eighties when the Dassault Rafale programme started falling behind schedule. Put into operation in 1993, this version was developed from the Mirage 2000N. Since 1999 the Mirage 2000D has taken part in France’s various security operations in Afghanistan supporting the forces deployed on the ground. A third volume dealing with the B and C versions will complete this Mirage 2000 collection.

The authorFrédéric Lert is a professional aviation journalist and takes a lot of trouble globetrotting and looking for subjects for his highly specialised reports. Acknowledged as the specialist of the 1960-80 period, he has published a number of books with Histoire et Collections: the Jaguar, the Super-Etendard, the F-16 and the Mirage IV and F1.

As I am more particularly an illustrator, I have given priority to the illustrations and iconography, followed by explanations which are deliberatelyconcise but as rigorous as possible. The aim was to tell the thirty year story of the Corsair’s extraordinary career from its baptism of fi re in the Pacifi c to African skies, passing through the Far-East and a less martial but nonetheless virile interlude in the colourful and exhilarating world of the PylonRaces. This book, which is actually the reissue, substantially increased of the previous edition published in 2003 and now out of print, does not

claim to be exhaustive and is destined as much to the enlightened amateur as to the neophyte, in whom perhaps will appear a new love for the fabulous Bent wing Bird.

50 FAMOUS PLANES (of World War Two)The fi fty planes which make up this book all marked the Second World War in one way or another. They have been photographed at the air shows were they still fl y, maintained in fl ying condition by associations or by wealthy amateurs at great expense and at the price of constant effort. The pilots who take to the air in these planes today are experienced people and it mustn’t be forgotten that the pilots were only on average 22 or 23 years old at the time. The author has therefore become attached as much to the men as to the machines.Among the famous planes in the book there are the Supermarine ‘Spitfi re’, Junkers Ju 52, Polikarpov I-16, Hawker ‘Hurricane’, Boeing B-17 ‘Flying Fortress, Bell P-39 ‘Airacobra’, Grumann F6F Hellcat, Republic P-47 ‘Thunderbolt’, Focke Wulf FW 190, Yakovlev Yak 3, Curtiss P-40B ‘Tomahawk’, North American P-51 ‘Mustang’ and Mistubishi A6M ‘Zero’, etc

The AuthorArnaud Beinat is already the author of three books including La force aérienne de combat, published in the middle of the nineties and for which he logged up more than 50 fl ying hours on the principal Armée de l’Air planes as well as with the Patrouille de France.

A GUIDE FOR PAINTING SECOND WORLD WAR FIGURINES

A beautifully assembled kit is always enhanced by the presence of a well-painted fi gurine. This statement has become a profession of faith for the author of this book, Joaquin Garcia Guazquez, one of the world’s armoured modelling elite; here he has chosen to give us the benefi t of his experience painting fi gurines from WWII, the supreme period for military modelling. Very instructively, using a lot of photographs, and step by step he explains how to paint a successful fi gurine, from the choice of tools, from the work area to the preparation of the fi gurine, painting the fl esh parts, the uniforms and the accessories, etc. This is required reading, intended to guide you and inspire you when painting fi gurines to go with your next armoured vehicle or action-packed scene.

Dictionary of motorbike brands in the department of the SeineAlmost 150 years ago, the very fi rst motorbike in the world, the steam-driven Perreaux motorbike, made its debut on the paving stones of the Porte Maillot in Paris. After that, hundreds of different brands of motorbikes sprang up in the vast former Department of the Seine: almost 600 of them! Not all of the names have the same renown or the same importance: some like de Dion & Bouton, Contal, Gnôme et Rhône, Griffon, Jonghi, Motobécane or Vélosolex became world famous, either because they were mass-produced or through the exploits of famous sportsmen. Of the others, only one, two or ten bikes were built and today they’ve been totally forgotten except by the author. The book is in principle a dictionary but also a tribute to the Department of the Seine which bubbled with activity; it is also an exceptional book of pictures. Volume 1 alone assembles almost one thousand, of which the large majority are period pictures. Finally this book is a tribute to those genial inventors at the end of the 19th Century, to the great industrialists of the twenties, thirties and fi fties, to the racing bike craftsmen of the seventies and eighties.

French Coaches, Buses and Trolleybuses 1950-1980In the summer of 2011, the Internet bus and trolleybus fan community got all excited when they discovered some extraordinary slides of these vehicles of which the oldest, taken in 1961, are therefore more than fi fty years old. When you discover these treasures, you can’t help remembering the remarkable books published in the UK – “London Coach Operators in Colour 1950-1980” and “London Buses in Colour: 1960s”.What were the features of these books which had no French equivalent? Large-size photographs which enabled the reader to enjoy the vehicles and their surroundings to the utmost, but above all there were colour photographs, which were almost unheard of in the fi fties and the sixties.Taking up this concept, French Coaches, Buses and Trolleybuses is a book to the glory of French road vehicles used for public transport in the marvellous context of the fi fties, sixties and seventies. This book is the fi rst of its kind in France and gathers together 371 unpublished snapshots taken on the spot by Jean-

Henri Manara in the most beautiful French towns, with captions by Nicolas Tellier.
