From the Director’s Desk...
By Lori Jennings-Harris, Director
Some time ago while visiting my favorite ice cream spot
I saw a sign posted on one of the windows that read, “ Hire a
teenager while they still know everything.” The sign gave me
a chuckle, but it also made me think about how we grow and
learn from birth and throughout our lives. Once children have
reached their teenage years many are convinced they have
everything all figured out. Often, it is not until the second or
even the third decade of our lives that we begin to really fig-
ure things out. According to the Senior Magazine Online,
“While we may have stopped physically growing at age 16,
inner personal growth must remain an important part of our
lives. At age 30, we were better than at age 20, and at age 50,
we should be better yet. Personal growth is a critical
component of life.”
This newsletter is focused on personal growth and devel-
opment. For an older adult, this may take many different
forms. It may include changing, increasing or even beginning
an exercise routine; taking an art, dance or ceramics class at
one of our senior activity centers is a great idea; exploring
one of our LIFE (Learning Is ForEver) trips; benefiting from
our Senior Rides Program; and for caregivers, participating in
our annual Caregivers Breakfast or attending our well-known
Health Fair; and how about volunteering in the community?
Volunteering is not only rewarding to those with whom we
volunteer, but it also provides personal satisfaction and self-
fulfillment to the volunteers. Any one or all of these things
may help one’s personal enrichment and development.
As always, the Department of Aging & Human
Services has available for older adults many ways to
explore opportunities for personal growth through a
number of different programs. New and emerging in-
terests can be explored through one or all three senior
activity centers. (Continued next page…)

Nutrition Corner by Donna Taggert, RD/LD/CDE
Have you ever walked into a room and forgotten why you did or been unable to recall
an obvious word? Many fear that their brain is not as sharp as it once was and the fear of los-
ing cognitive function is as scary as other health conditions. The brain, like the cardiovascular
system, depends on good blood flow for optimal functioning. What is good for the heart is
also good for your brain. Physical activity as well as the heart-healthy Mediterranean style of
eating has been linked to better cognitive function, memory, and alertness in several studies.
A variation of this diet called the MIND diet specifically targets brain health, emphasiz-
ing particular nutrients that stand out for their brain-boosting powers. Some examples are
omega-3s from fatty fish, lutein most predominate in egg yolks, B vitamins and vitamin E,
curcumin which gives the yellow
color to turmeric, resveratrol in
grapes and catechins found in teas.
It is easy to get caught up in one
particular food but it is really the
consumption of a variety of foods,
or dietary patterns, that make a dif-
ference. More information on the
MIND diet and how it can be of
benefit to your brain health will be
presented in April at the various
senior activity centers. Come out to
see how easy it is to make small
changes to your current diet to im-
prove your brain health as well as
overall health. See below for the
date and time of the center closest to you.

Senior Information & Assistance
By Debbie Barker, Senior I & A Manager
State Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit The State of Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation provides a credit towards
the property tax bill for homeowners’ who qualify on the basis of gross household income, net
worth, and their property tax liability. Previous applicants must submit a new application each
year.
To have your application considered for a tax credit the dwelling for which application is
being made must be your principal residence, where you reside or expect to reside for more
than six months of the tax year; have a legal interest in the property; have a gross household
income (including Social Security) less than $60,000 and your net worth, excluding the value
of the property for which application is being made, must not exceed $200,000 as of December
31, 2017. Your net worth includes the value of other properties owned, CDs, investments, etc.
The credit also takes into consideration the gross income in comparison to the 2018 property
tax bill; i.e., a household income of $30,000 will need to have a tax bill over $1,680 to be eligi-
ble for the credit.
Income information must be reported for the resident homeowner(s), spouse or co-owner,
and all other occupants of the dwelling unless these occupants can be claimed as dependents or
unless they are paying reasonable fixed charges such as rent or room and board.
The deadline for filing a 2018 Homeowner’s Property Tax Credit is September 1, 2018.
However, applicants are encouraged to file their applications prior to May 1, to receive a credit
directly on their July property tax bill. Eligible applicants, who file their applications after May
1, will receive a tax credit certificate to be used toward payment of the tax bill or for a refund if
the bill has already been paid.
Applications for this program are available at each senior activity center. Assistance is
available for those 60 and over by calling Debbie Barker at the Garvey Center at 301-475-4200,
ext. *1064 or Melissa Craig at the Loffler/Northern Center at ext. *1654.

Focus On Fitness
By Alice Allen, Division Manager
After a very, very cold winter, Spring is finally on the way! With the coming of Spring,
we see a renewal of life all around us. Trees and flowers will soon be budding, preparing for
another growing season. We too should consider our own personal growth and development.
No matter our age or physical abilities, goals for personal growth and development can always
be considered. One such goal that has many personal benefits is to become more physically
active on a regular basis. Regular physical activity (some people call this exercise) is so good
for you. It helps you maintain and improve your strength, makes it easier to do everyday activi-
ties, improves balance to help prevent falls, helps to manage and improve chronic diseases like
diabetes, heart disease, and osteoporosis, helps you feel happier and less depressed, helps you
be able to keep up with your grand (or great-grand) children and helps you stay independent.
What could be better than that?
The Senior Activity Centers have many opportunities for you to take part in physical activi-
ties. From dancing to yoga, strength training to stretching, Zumba to pickleball, kickboxing and
more, you can find it at one of the three county senior activity centers. Check out pages 32-33
of this edition of the New Beginning for the many classes available to you. Take part on a reg-
ular basis and feel your body become stronger and more flexible. Not to mention the fun you
will have meeting new people and making new friends. How good is that for personal growth
and development!!

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program By Norine Rowe, RSVP Project Manager
Personal Growth and Development Recently, I was listening to a speaker talk about the keys to aging well. One of those “keys” was continuing to learn and grow, exploring uncharted territory, and keeping oneself open to new ideas, new information, new horizons. Learning new things is one way to stay excited about life, eager to see what may be around the next corner. To put it simply, we’re never too old to learn, to dream, to grow. Learning helps keep our minds sharp. It helps us open ourselves to new experiences and new people. It helps us stay young at heart. So maybe it’s time for you to try
something new that will stretch your life and your imagination. Take a look in the newspaper, go online, or read something in this newsletter and spread your wings. There’s no time like now to begin a New Beginning!
LIFE; Learning Is ForEver
A popular program made possible by RSVP volunteers is the Learning Is ForEver Program, or LIFE. This program epitomizes the concept that learning is a life-long endeavor that keeps us young in heart and mind. Through the LIFE Program, RSVP volunteers
plan and organize educational outreach tours for seniors. Besides exploring Southern Maryland to learn about life in our own backyard, LIFE Tour Organizers plan exciting day trips beyond our local borders. Offered every spring and fall, these tours are often filled to capacity and show seniors just how much fun it can be to learn, explore, and grow, especially when in good company.
National Volunteer Week
In celebration of National Volunteer Week, we
thank all our wonderful RSVP volunteers who
keep local non-profits running, our Senior Activity
Centers humming, our offices operating, our
museums open, and our county programs meeting
the needs of local citizens. So much in our
community would not be possible without RSVP
volunteers. So we thank you for your service and
for the way you transform lives and inspire others!

RSVP volunteers who continue to make
significant contributions to our community!
Notice: Special Banquet Parking
Our Volunteer Banquet takes place during the

Human Services personnel will also be available to provide

Awards Banquet and Possible Wintry Weather
There is always a chance snow could affect our Volunteer Banquet. If we have snow and public
schools are closed, our Banquet will have to be rescheduled. Please check the Public Schools
website for closing information. For our event status, you can visit the Department of Aging &
Human Services website at www.stmarysmd.com/aging/, or you can call RSVP at 301-475-
4200, ext. *1653, for a voice mail message with event information. Here’s hoping we have
bright, sunny skies and we’re able to proceed as scheduled!
