Advanced Higher Course Assessment
Course Assessment at Advanced Higher
Course Assessment at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher assesses Added Value
Courses at Advanced Higher are graded A – D, as at present
Controlled Assessment of setting, conducting and marking
For English there are 4 Components – two question papers, a portfolio and a project
Advanced Higher: Question Paper – Literary Study
Set and marked by SQA Conducted in centres under conditions specified for external
examination by SQA Candidates will choose one question from a range of questions
and complete one critical essay in response to it There are no longer specified texts Candidates will choose either poetry, prose, prose non fiction or
drama (the choice of texts must not be the same as that used in component 4: Project - Dissertation).
Question paper has 20 marks which is 20% the of total mark Duration – 1 hour 30 minutes
Advanced Higher: Question Paper – Textual Analysis
Set and marked by SQA Conducted in centres under conditions specified for external
examination by SQA Candidates will choose one question on an unseen literary text
and write an extended critical analysis on it Candidates will choose either poetry, prose, prose non fiction or
drama Question paper has 20 marks which is 20% of the total mark Duration – 1 hour 30 minutes
Advanced Higher: Portfolio - writing
Set by centres within SQA guidelines Conducted under some supervision and control Evidence submitted to SQA for external marking Candidates will produce two pieces of writing for two different
purposes The writing can be from the following types; persuasive,
informative, argumentative, personal/reflective, poetry, prose fiction, drama
There is no requirement to do creative and discursive The portfolio has 30 marks - up to 15 marks will be awarded for
each piece of writing chosen. This is 30% of the total mark
Advanced Higher: Project - dissertation
Set by centres within SQA guidelines Conducted under some supervision and control Evidence submitted to SQA for external marking Candidates will produce a dissertation demonstrating
independent planning, research and presentation of their knowledge and understanding of an aspect or aspects of literature
The text(s) chosen must not be the same as those used in the question paper
The dissertation will be between 2500 -3000 words long and will have 30 marks which is 30% of the total marks
