    NIGHT

    !ecently,Christoph Weber,a Reno local,competed andplaced in the

prestigious writing contestWriters and Illustrators ofthe Future. Weber placedthird in the writing portionof the contest with hisshort story “Möbius.”

The contest was foundedby L. Ron Hubbard in1983 with the intentionof recognizing up-and-coming speculative fictionwriters. Judges of thecontest include OrsonScott Card among otheresteemed writers.

    Weber, among other

things, is an arborist anda writer with a knack forissues facing the futureof the human race. TheNevada Sagebrush recentlygot into contact withWeber and asked somequestions regarding hisrecent success and whatthis success means.

Are you a Reno native? If not, how long have youlived in Reno, when did youmove here, etc.?

    Born and raised!

How do you like Reno? When I was younger I wanted to get out, and

after high school (Reno High), I did. But once I’dseen a bit of the world, Reno grew on me. She hassome of the arts and culture you’d find in a largermetropolis, yet still offers the wildland escapes of arural area. When I realized what a special balancethat is, the vortex sucked me back in.

Where did you go to college and what did youstudy?

I graduated from Arizona State University, whereI studied political science and Mandarin Chinese. Ihad vague plans of getting a law degree, and tookone graduate law class. That was enough to know itwasn’t for me. My senior year, a biology professorsparked a deep interest in life sciences, and I thinkthat drove me to other fields of study and work.

When did you start writing and what inspired youto?

I’ve always been a big reader, but aside from

some atrocious poetry, I didn’t give much thoughtto writing until my senior year of college, when Ireceived some rather backhanded encouragement. Ifound out that one of my teachers was investigatingme for plagiarism because she didn’t think I couldhave written the papers I was turning in. Of courseI hadn’t plagiarized a word, but her disbelief mademe think, “Hey, maybe I have a knack for writing!”Strange way to encourage a student, though I’mquite thankful for her efforts to fail me.

I wrote my first piece of fiction shortly after thatwhile working on a wildland fire crew. We were inIdaho, and the fire was nuking off, just turning forestto ash. Those apocalyptic images sort of burnedthemselves in my mind, and while still on the fire Ibegan writing a novel about a future in which Earthburns and people try to rebuild out of that cleanblack slate. It wasn’t very good.

Was speculative fiction your first choice? I

understand that you write literary fiction as well? They’re both good genres, but for me, speculative

fiction is the most exciting. Until I finish building mytime machine, I’m stuck in this moment. Sciencefiction offers a free vacation to anywhere in spaceand time.

Yet even with all the cosmos as a potentialsetting, many of my stories are set on a near-future Earth. I like to look at current trends andextrapolate, to imagine what things will be like in 10,50 or 100 years, if those trends continue. This is oneof science fiction’s great strengths: it has predicted, and even helped bring about, many things thatbecame reality.

What was your mindset submitting your shortstory to the contest? Many accomplishedwriters have won the contest before, such asStephen Baxter and Karen Joy Fowler. Were you

intimidated or anxious in any way?I was about as confident as a seal in a shark’s

mouth. The judges includesome titans of speculativefiction — Orson Scott Card, author of “Ender’s Game,”to name just one — andthey receive thousandsof entries each quarter. Ialmost didn’t send thatstory, because I didn’t thinkit was good enough.

You said your initialreaction to learning aboutwinning the contest wasshock. Now how do youfeel about it five monthslater? Has it changed yourlife or writing in any way?

It’s been a shot ofmotivation. Might beoverdramatic to say it’schanged my life, but inApril they’re flying meto Hollywood for a weekto workshop with a bunch of best-selling authors,

and I have a hunch that will do great things for mywriting.

Could you give a brief summary of what youraward-winning short story is about, and if thereare any deeper themes or devices that you use?

“Möbius” is about a future where human geneticengineering is outlawed. It follows a detective onher quest to hunt down illegal underground “gene-tweakers.” Eventually she discovers that one of thecriminal technologies she so fiercely opposes holdsthe key to saving a loved one’s life, and she’s forcedto make a brutal choice: abandon her values, or let aloved one die.

Ultimately, the plot encourages the reader to askan immortal question: if there were a treatmentthat could extend the human life span to athousand years or more, would you want it, andwould you want everyone to have it?

It’s a question that we may have to ask prettysoon. The first anti-aging drug enters human trialsthis year. If this drug grants an extra 10 years oflife, it may keep people alive long enough to getthe next improved treatment, which gives, say, another 30 to 50 years, and so on. As a researcherin the anti-aging field has pointed out, if the rate ofimprovement is rapid enough, it is possible that thefirst person to live to 1,000 has already been born.

It seems that through speculative writing, likemany of the greats, you choose to explore ethicaltopics. Some come to mind: Brave New Worldby Aldous Huxley, Ender’s Game by Orson ScottCard and many more. Where do you think thisfascination with these more serious themes, inyour case, comes from?

I hope that my writing, first and foremost, isfun to read. But yes, “Möbius” is one of the more

serious stories I’ve written, and even beneath mylighthearted stuff are serious ethical questions

that we’re facing now or will have toface in the near future.

Where does that come from?Well, if we don’t think about

ethics, we end up doing unethicalthings! Stories are perhaps thebest way to develop and maintainideas of right and wrong (andall the juicy stuff in between).Artificial intelligence researchersare currently facing the problemof teaching robots to achieve theirobjectives within the confines ofour societal norms. How do theydo this? They teach robots humanstories!

Your writing is largelybased around biological

issues, e.g., anti-aging andthe use of de-extinction.Do you think being anarborist has given youinspiration or possibly aleg up in this aspect of yourwriting?

Absolutely. I’ve hatchedmy best story ideas whileworking with trees. My firstpublished piece appearedin the journal Nature, and Ihad the idea while workingon a giant apple tree rightby the university.

Are you working onanything currently? Canwe expect any publicationsfrom you any time soon?

My winning short story,“Möbius,” will appear in“Writers of the Future,Volume 32,” which is nowavailable for pre-order onAmazon and will be carriedby Barnes & Noble andother booksellers this May.

I have about 15 othershort stories I’m trying topolish and sell while I finishmy novel, “The Descent ofMan.” It’s a lightning-pacedadventure that dealswith the extinction ofmost bee species and thede-extinction of others, including Neanderthals

(which is not as far-fetched as it might sound).

It’s a twisty, page-turning adventure, but it alsodeals with some serious issues, and having aNeanderthal main character is a great way toilluminate the question of what it means to behuman.

It’s the best thing I’ve written, and if anyonewants to stay apprised, they can sign up fornotifications at www.christophweber.com.

Do you have any advice for a writer that is juststarting or starting to think about writing?

Well, I sold my first story barely more than ayear ago, so I’m just getting started myself! But Ihave received some good advice that I can passalong.

First, read! And read broadly, includingnonfiction. Knowledge is power, in writing andlife. And when you read, dissect. Almost everybook has some blank pages near the front; I usethese to make notes of all the things that did and

didn’t work for me. Periodically, I’ll review thosenotes, and I find that helps me avoid others’mistakes.

Critiques are helpful, but beware of listeningto family and friends. You might as well getfeedback from your dog. They all love you, sothey’re all inclined to tell you it’s great (or lickyour face). The best critique I ever received wasof that first novel I wrote, the one about Earthburning. The reviewer told me I should deleteabout 90 percent of it. Left me depressed for aweek. But you know what? She was right, and I’llnever write another slow-paced novel.

High Sierra Writers offers local critique groupoptions. Online writing groups are good, too — Ilike Critters.org. Though I’m unaware of any, there might be a critique group on campus. Ifthere isn’t, start one!

    GREG POPOVICHBetter known as “Pop,”

    Greg Popovich has

    constructed a championship

    ring factory in San Antonio

for the past 20 years. He’s

    beloved by fans and his

    players for his brutal honesty

    and unwillingness to answer

    lazy questions from members

of the media. At 67 years old,

it will be a sad day when Pop

    stops coaching.

    THE WEEKLY DEBATE

Peyton Manning’s single greatest contribution to the worldwas that he was great at the same time as Tom Brady. Thegreatest rivalry in the NFL for the past 20 years wasn’tbetween two teams; it was between Manning and Brady, whose competitive nature elevated one another andentertained football fans for two decades. Manning wasobsessed with preparation and attention to detail, whichshowed both in his style of footbal l and the way he conductedhimself off the field. Manning was a corporate brand, starringin every commercial from Oreo’s to Nationwide. He was a

perfectionist and football won’t be the same without him.

Peyton Manning’s best contribution to the world ofsports is his personality in commerials and with themedia. Have you ever seen a commerical Manningdidn’t turn down? Me neither. From Nationwide andhis jingles about chicken parm and losing feeling inhis toes, to being the high-pitched Peyton Manningwith cable, Peyton Manning has always had a senseof humor. He is a huge breath of fresh air comparedto most of the NFL quarterbacks in the league. TomBrady doesn’t have a funny bone in his entire body.

Props to Peyton, because he was fun.

    NBA Coaches

    WEEKLY TOP 5

    1

    BRAD STEVENSJust five years ago,

    Brad Stevens was

    leading Butler University to

    back-to-back appearances in

the NCAA finals. When hiredby the Celtics in 2013, many

    doubted his ability to coach

in the NBA, but Stevens has

    turned a mediocre Boston

    lineup into the third best

    team in the conference.

    2

    RICK CARLISLELebron James, Kobe

    Bryant, Tim Duncan

    and Dwyane Wade have

combined to win all but three

    NBA championships from

    1999-2014. Rick Carlisle

was the coach of one of

    those exceptions, the Dallas

    Mavericks, when they

    upset Lebron and

the Heat in 2011.The Mavericks have

    missed the playoffs

     just once since 2000, and

much of that has to do with

    3

    FRANK VOGELVogel turned the

    irrelevant Indiana

    Pacers into championship

    contenders over night. Vogel

did so with little talent other

    than Paul George, but was

never able to get over the

    hump against Lebron James

    in the Eastern Conference.

    Once again, the Pacers are

    outplaying expectations this

season and are set to be a

    tough out in the East.

    4

    STEVE KERRIt’s tough to assess

    the coaching prowess

of Steve Kerr for a couple of

    reasons. For one, he inherited

    possibly the most talented

NBA team in the history of

    basketball. Secondly, the

    Warriors were 39-4 while

Kerr was unable to coach at

    the beginning of the season

    because of his back surgery.

    Kerr is obviously a talented

    coach, as the Warriors won

    67 games last year following

    a 51-win season under Mark

Jackson, but how would he fare

    with a less talented roster?

    5

    THIS WEEK’S GAME

    MOUNTAIN WEST STANDINGS

    IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

TRACK AND FIELDHeavy rain and winds didn’t

    contain the Wolf Pack, as

it claimed three first-placefinishes and eight top-three

    finishes in the Cal Season

    Opener. Leah Carter, with a

     jump of 5 feet a nd 5.75 inches ,

landed on the third spot in

    Nevada’s all-time list and took

    first. Senior Raffaela Wiesbeck

landed top spot in javelin throw,

with 145 feet and 11 inches.

    Sophomore Katia Coquis-

Lossio, with 140 feet and 9

    inches, senior Alyssa Zuzino

at 136 feet and 11 inches, and

    Savanna Haverfield with 118

    feet and 10 inches rounded

    out the top three. Sophomore

    Alexandra Tierney took second

with a time of 1:03.62 in the

    400-meter hurdles. The Pack’s

next meet will be in Davis,California.

    SOFTBALLNevada softball team got

    their 12th straight win with

a score of 3-1, but dropped

    the second game 8-0, in

    a doubleheader against

    Sacramento State on Friday.

    Freshman Brooke Bolinger

    blanked Sac State. The Hornets

got on the board with an RBI

    double in the fourth inning,

    score 3-1. The freshman

    phenom struck out two batters

in the bottom of the fifth,

    posting 1-2-3 innings in the

    sixth and seventh, getting

the win. In the second game, sophomore Aaliyah Gibson

went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.

    Senior Megan Sweet picked up

two hits including an RBI triple,

    with senior Hannah Harger

hitting a double with her first

career start at third base. Yet

    it wasn’t enough, as three

more runs in the fifth from the

    Hornets caused the game to

    end 8-0.

    WOMEN’S BASKETBALLThe Nevada women’s

    basketball team ended the

    regular season with a 66-42

loss to New Mexico on Friday.

    The Wolf Pack fought the

    Lobos through three tough

    quarters, going into the fourth

    44-39. The fourth quarter was

    all New Mexico; the Lobos

scored 22 points and held the

Pack to zero field goals and

    three points, which all came

    from free throws. UNM shot

    46 percent and dominated in

    the paint, outscoring the Pack

    32-14. Junior Stephanie Schmid

was the only Pack player to
