Tell Them From Me SurveyTowards the end of last term, students in Years 4, 5 and 6 completed the ‘Tell Them From Me’ online survey. The survey provides valuable feedback on what our students think about school life and how engaged they are with school. A summary of the results will be presented to parents at the Week 9 P & C Association Meeting on Wednesday 15 May. A few of the key findings are:

• 95% of students valued school outcomes, believing schooling is useful in everyday life and will have a strong bearing on their future

• 90% of students reported they tried hard to succeed in their learning

• 92% of students had positive relationships, with friends they can trust who encourage them to make positive choices

• 92% of students considered they have positive behaviour at school

Sound WavesThis year, we will be trialling an explicit phonics-based spelling program called Sound Waves across Years 1-6 to supplement our existing lessons. This program consolidates the synthetic phonics approach taught in Kindergarten. This approach uses a sound-to-letter strategy, which acknowledges that sounds can be represented in more than one way in written form.

Sound Waves promotes deeper understanding by replacing rote learning and memorisation with strategies that can be used for reading, writing and spelling. This incorporates word study, including morphology (prefixes, suffixes and Greek and Latin roots), etymology (word origins) and language concepts like homophones and homographs.

For more information, please contact Ms Genevieve Carnegie or your child’s class teacher.

Kindergarten News Stage 1 News (Years 1 & 2)2H have been learning about number sequences in mathematics. We have been learning how to find missing numbers and describe the rule in number sequences. 2H are so lucky to have lots of wonderful resources in our classroom to help us learn in a fun and hands on way. In this lesson we made our own number sequences using hundreds charts. We used mathematical language to describe the rule of our number sequences. Some students demonstrated their number sequence using an interactive hundreds chart on the Smart Board. Other students described the rule by finishing the sentence on the whiteboard.

KL are very excited to be back at school for Term 2 of Kindergarten! We have been diving back into learning this term. This week we are learning new sounds to help with our reading. In mathematics we are learning about counting forward and backwards. KL have enjoyed using the iPads and activities in our maths groups.

This week in writing, KL has been working on making our sentences more interesting by adding details and extra information. We have enjoyed starting reading groups again this term and look forward to working with our parent volunteers.

Miss K. Murray - 6M Class TeacherMiss T. Barone-Kriznar - 3K Class Teacher

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4) Stage 3 News (Year 5 & 6)3K have started Term 2 by re-visiting the place value of numbers. We have been looking at the place value of four-digit and five-digit numbers. 3K have been working in pairs and small groups to challenge each other by creating four-digit and five-digit numbers, and then adding one ten, hundred, or thousand to create a new number. We have also been revising place value and how this helps us determine numbers which are greater than or less than one another. 3K have loved creating their own numbers and working together through hands-on tasks during mathematical groups!

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Solution“Every idea has the power to shape our world.”

Every year, Google holds a competition called “The Google Science Fair”. This is an opportunity for High School students to find a problem worth solving, think up ideas, explore, develop and test their solution and communicate their results. The winning students from previous years are truly inspirational. 6M has loved watching the short videos that highlight the ideas of these young problem solvers. As such, we decided to tackle a world issue that our planet currently faces and see if we could come up with our own solution. While many people are unaware of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), it is a major issue affecting global environmental health - and a problem to which we all likely contribute without even knowing.

What have we learnt so far?Over 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by ocean. Within the oceans, the currents meet at different points to form five major gyres. A gyre is a location within the ocean that is formed by a circular system of currents. Debris naturally collect in points like this. The North Pacific Garbage Patch is the largest of these patches. It is the world’s largest landfill and occupies an area in the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and California. The UN Environmental Program has revealed that the amount of debris is growing incredibly quickly. The patch of debris is constantly changing, so it is difficult to make any definite judgements about its size and shape...or even its precise location. Some scientists estimate it might be twice the size of Texas!

This is just our Week 1 learning and we’re intrigued!Throughout the remainder of the term, 6M will be learning about the types of rubbish found in the GPGP, the densityof the debris, the reasons why there is so much plastic in the ocean, the impact on sea life, the path of the rubbish traveling to the GPGP, the problems associated with cleaning the GPGP and previous solutions that have been attempted. All of this learning will inform our own unique and original solutions to the GPGP problem. We will hold our own Science Fair and present our ideas within the school community.

Science and Technology NewsScientist of the Month:

Each month we will be sharing interesting facts about a famous scientist. This month’s clues are below. If you think you can guess who it is, then email your answer to Mrs Keeling: [email protected]

Who am I?

• I was born 1791 and died in 1867.• I am known as the ‘father of electricity’.• I had to leave school at 13 and get a job in a

bookstore. Instead of just binding the books, I read them cover to cover because I wanted to learn more about the world.

• I became interested in chemistry and saved my money to buy some apparatus and different chemicals, so I could check that what I had read was actually true.

• I discovered Electric Magnetic Rotation-this eventually became the electric motor.

• Fun fact: I invented the toy balloon.Famous Quote:“Nothing is too wonderful to be true if it be consistent with the laws of nature.”

STEAM Fun:

Last term, students in Year 1 and 3 engaged in a range of STEAM challenges, as part of their Science and Technology unit.

STEAM challenges require students to apply knowledge and skill from science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics in order to solve a specific problem. The tasks are collaborative and see students working with a limited amount of materials and under a time constraint.

The students all had lots of fun and created some very clever products. Their challenge was to create a structure for ‘Boris’ the Science Room mascot to allow him to remain at least 2cm off the ground. He likes to see the class and couldn’t from his position directly on the teacher’s desk.

In small groups, students were given only two pieces of paper and masking tape.

For an extra challenge for the older students, pegs were slowly added to Boris to see if he could still stay upright. The best creation kept Boris up off the ground and could hold five pegs, without Boris falling.

You can try it at home with a favourite stuffed animal and send in a picture to show us your creation.

Neutral Bay Public School now has a media team made up of students from year 5.

The Media Team will create high quality TV news reports throughout the year about all the wonderful events and activi-ties here at NBPS.

Three main stories are featured in our news bulletins: firstly we cover important events at the school, secondly. we dsicuss

issues the students feel strongly about and thirdly, we show-case what the students are learning in class and how they are learning it.

Each group in the team has a script writer, a presenter, a cam-era operator and a video editor.

The school recently purchased a lapel (or lavalier) mic and a LED TV light that is dimmable and includes diffusers and col-our-correction gels. With professional equipment such as this we will be able to produce broadcasts with exceptionally-high production values. Many of our news presentions will also be filmed and edited with iMovie on the iPad.

The team meets every Tuesday at lunch time.

The media team is trained and co-ordinated by Mr Rutherford.
