Term 1 - Week 8 2019 Stars of the Week

On 7 April 2019, Sienna S (4A), Elodie B (4M) and Alexa B (2J), together with their families, will be climbing to the summit of Australia’s highest mountain for a great cause - to provide children in Uganda with quality education.

Kosi Climb for Kids 2019

The Kosi Climb for Kids charity walk organised by The School for Life Foundation is a 13 km round trip from Thredbo to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko. The girls will walk the challenging 13km just as the kids in rural parts of Uganda do each day just to go to school. All money raised by the girls will go to feeding children in Uganda so they don’t go to school on an empty stomach. We wish the girls all the best for their summit challenge.

Quality Teaching Research ProjectI am pleased to confirm that our school will be participating in an exciting new research project on teacher professional development. The research is being undertaken by the University of Newcastle, commencing this term. Students will be invited to participate in this project if their teacher is involved. Invitations will be sent out to relevant classes this week.

NAPLAN Online Trial TestNAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed in school and life. The NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy development. Students in Years 3 and 5 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

From Tuesday 14 May to Friday 24 May 2019, our school will participate in NAPLAN Online. Students do not need to be computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum, and our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online format. To see the types of questions and interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site.

Our students will be trialling NAPLAN over the next two weeks, and undertaking the Omnibus Test. Each student will sit this 45 minute test under test conditions. The Omnibus Test is a combined reading, language conventions and numeracy test.

Please note that this is a practice test only. No data will be provided to schools or families as a result of the Omnibus Test.

If you have any questions about NAPLAN Online, please contact your child’s teacher.

Harmony DayThis year is the 20th Anniversary of Harmony Day and we will celebrate this tomorrow, Thursday 21 March. The day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity which is one of our greatest strengths and is what makes our country great. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. As part of Harmony day, students are invited to wear their cultural dress and/or bring an item to school that holds cultural significance. Alternatively, students may wear an orange accessory to represent Harmony Day.

ANZAC DayANZAC Day - School Honour RollWar has impacted all families on some level. This year marks the 100th year anniversary of our school Honour Roll, which features the names of 402 ex-pupils and community members who “nobly responded to the Empire’s call to defend our honour and liberty in World War I.” (Ref: Neutral Bay Public School Honour Board).

Neutral Bay Public School will be making our own Wall of Remembrance and Field of Poppies display for ANZAC Day to honour those who have served in all wars/conflicts. If you have a member of your family who has served in any capacity in any war or conflict, we invite you to contribute by making a poppy or by completing a Wall of Remembrance form.

We have provided templates for you to complete as a family, which will be proudly displayed at school from Monday 8 April to Friday 12 April. This can be accessed through these hyperlinks:

Miss L. Josephson - 2J Class TeacherMrs J. Hudson - KH Class Teacher

2J have been using informal and formal units to measure items and objects around the classroom. We have discussed the pros and cons to using informal units such as blocks and have decided that if we need to measure, we are best to use formal units such as a ruler as the measurements are far more accurate. We have had so much fun measuring items in the classroom and using the iPad app ‘SeeSaw’ to take photos of our work and send them through to our class teacher, Miss Josephson. We love to reflect on our learning through viewing our class portfolio of work at the end of our lesson.

In 2019, Harmony Week is being held from 17-23 March. Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity and provides an opportunity to discuss important messages of inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. Neutral Bay Public School is participating in Harmony Day celebrations on Thursday 21 March. In the lead up to Harmony Day, 4S engaged in a range of classroom activities to celebrate diversity and inclusiveness. During an art lesson, we created doves using a range vibrant oil pastel colours and glitter to represent cultural diversity in Australia. 4S students also brainstormed some words they thought best represented the meaning of Harmony Day. Take a look at some of the words and phrases they came up with…

Happy Harmony Day!

Year 6 have been having a fantastic term with many exciting learning experiences.

Last week, Year 6 were lucky enough to have “The Cyber Lady” come in and discuss safe ways to use the internet. This was an invaluable experience for all students and there have been many class discussions about internet safety.

Year 6 have loved getting to know their Year 1 buddies. 6P and 1T meet fortnightly and participate in a number of activities together, such art and technology (I.C.T.). Year 6 have demonstrated leadership and kindness towards their buddies.

What a great start to Year 6!
