A computer network, or simply a network, is a collection of computers and other hardware components interconnected by communication channels that allow sharing of resources and information, where at least one process in one device is able to send/receive data to/from at least one process residing in a remote device, then the two devices are said to be in a network.

• Sharing of devices (printers & scanners)• Sharing of program/software• Sharing of files• Sharing of data• Sharing information• Sharing of single high speed internet connection• Can access server centered database• Better communication using internet services

such as email, mailing list & internet relate chat (IRC)

Metropolitan Area Network(MAN)

Local Area Network (LAN)

Wide Area Network (WAN)

Page 11: Networking1stsemester

• A network of computers that are in the same physical location, such as home or building

• Usually connected using Ethernet

Page 12: Networking1stsemester

Some characteristics

smallest network. single building, home, school. simplest form of LAN is to connect two

computers together. less than 500 interconnected devices. inexpensive hardware: twisted pair,

coaxial cable, fiber optic or wireless. faster than MAN and WAN.

Page 13: Networking1stsemester

Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) A wireless technology that connects computers

without cables Access Point (AP)

A device (base station) that connects wireless devices together

Usually connected to a wired-network ESSID (Extended Service Set ID)

A “name” for the AP, eg. mobilenet Hotspot

The area covered by wireless access points

Page 15: Networking1stsemester

The network that connects several LANs in a city area through communication devices

For example, Dhaka, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Singapore, Tokyo, London and New York.

Large physical area : city Example: Bank, Financial organization MAN used fiber optic. High speed network (not fast as LAN).

Page 16: Networking1stsemester

A router is a special-purpose system dedicated to the task of interconnecting networks. A router can interconnect networks that use different technologies, including different media, physical addressing schemes, or frame formats

Page 17: Networking1stsemester

Largest network in the world Cover large distances such as states,

countries or continents. WAN is group of MANs and LANs Use Router to connect between

networks. WAN use fiber optic, speed 20-2000kbps

(slower than LAN and MAN).
