Gigabit EthernetGigabit Ethernet

•The most recent development in the Ethernet standard

•Is a protocol that has a transmission speed of 1Gbps

•It can be used with both fibre optic cabling and copper cabling

Page 4: Networking 101 TEE201. Table of Contents Gigabit Ethernet Where would a gigabit Ethernet protocol normally be used? What would you have to use to connect.

Where would a Gigabit Ethernet Where would a Gigabit Ethernet protocol normally be used?protocol normally be used?

•It is primarily used for backbones on a network

•Gigabit Ethernet is also used for workstation and server connections

What would you have to use to What would you have to use to connect computers that use connect computers that use different network protocols?different network protocols?

•A router is used to translate information from one network to another

•Routers select the best path for the message to take based on the destination and the origin

•Routers route messages between any two protocols

So how does a router work?So how does a router work?

What is a DIN type connector? What is a DIN type connector?

•DIN 41612 connectors are used widely to connect network equipment such as routers and switches.

•A DIN type connector is a plug and socket connector consisting of a circular pattern of pins in a metal sleeve. This type of connector is commonly seen on keyboards.

Ethernet vs. Token RingEthernet vs. Token Ring

•Connections for coaxial and/or twisted pair cables

•If designed for coaxial cable, the connector will be BNC

•If designed for twisted pair, it will have a RJ-45 connection

•Some Ethernet cards also contain an AUI connector (Attachment Unit Interface)

•Look similar to Ethernet cards

•Visible difference is the connector on the back of the card

•Generally have a nine pin DIN type connector to attach the card to the network cable

Which cable should I use?Which cable should I use?

Factors to consider when choosing the cable for your network include:

•Use: Voice only, data to 4 Mbps, data to 10 Mbps, data to 20 Mbps, data to 100 Mbps

•Protocol: Ethernet, fast Ethernet, local talk, token ring, FDDI, ATM

•Speed: 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 4-16 Mbps, 100+ Mbps

School NetworksSchool Networks

STP- Shielded twisted pair cable is suitable for areas where there is electrical interference. STP is often used on networks using Token ring topology

UTP- Unshielded twisted pair cable is popular and is usually used for school networks

There are two main reasons why school networks use UTP and not STP:

•Cost

•Expandability
