In the James Bond canon, it is a well-known piece of trivia that 007 prefers his martinis “shaken, not stirred.”

This month’s cover of Network, features a “Do Not Disturb” sign tempting us to ask what goes on beyond closed doors. Most of us, unlike Bond, would rather live our lives neither shaken, nor stirred. A few, perhaps, prefer a little excitement, not minding being a little shaken, as long as they remain unstirred. I believe it should be the trademark of the Christ-follower to be always open to the kind of shaking that stirs us to action.

Behind our “Do Not Disturb” sign is the call to prayer. One plank of Calvary’s vision for the year 2012 is to stir you to a renewed passion for prayer. Remember the powerful words of Acts 4:31: “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken.” What a great goal for Calvary! You can pursue the prayer theme with an article reframing the prayer issue: “Static on the Prayer Line.”

Another place North American believers can afford to be shaken is our relationship with money. Love it or hate it, you can’t live without it. But Jesus may stir you with the surprising things he says about you and your money. We explore his words in “Death and Taxes.” As usual, he’s constantly upping the ante!

Do not disturb? Only long enough to be shaken and stirred by God. That’s the kind of disturbance we all need.

BOARD CANDIDATES 2012A total of two Board members will be elected at the annual meeting on Sunday, March 11. Please pray for this meeting and the election of our new Board Members.

David Hatt

At 52, David says he enjoys being a servant for God. It is also the reason why he is running for a position on the Board of Directors. David and his wife Karen have three children, Brandon, 25, Aislynn, 22, and Janelle, 20. The Hatts have been attending Calvary for 11 years. David’s involvement in Calvary life includes: serving as a board member for the past three years, including Board secretary, helping with the CAT Ministry, taking attendance on Sunday morning, singing in the church choir, and going on missions trips. In the community, David continues his volunteerism by working with Samaritan’s Purse and the Operation Christmas Child program. He just finished his fifteenth year. He also sits on an Advisory Committee at Conestoga College. Favourite Bible verse? “Psalm 121 stands out for me – I lift up my eyes to the hills where does my help come from – when our son was sick with leukemia. This verse kept my wife and I going. It was our prayer of strength,” says David.

Prakash Jayakumar

It’s been a decade since Prakash, 34, moved to Cambridge and started attending Calvary. Over the years Prakash has volunteered his time in the library and Promiseland. He has also been a part of the choir and cantata productions. In 2009, Prakash went to Kenya as part of the missions team. Currently, he is leading a small group. This will be the second time he has been nominated for the Board of Directors. “I declined to have my name stand for the election the first time. When I was nominated again I felt I should not stand in the way of what God wants to do with me,” says Prakash. He goes on to say that his favourite Bible verses are Hewbrews 12:1-3. “These verses make me aware of my destiny that is sealed for me in Christ Jesus and they encourage me to run this race that is set out for me with perseverance.” Prakash and his wife, Blessing, have a 10-month-old son named John.

David Schuetzkowski

David, 52, has been married for 30 years to his wife Esther. The Schuetzkowskis have called Calvary their church home for 14 years. Over the years David has served his church community as an usher, a small group member, a board member, and a treasurer. When asked why he is running for a position on the Board of Directors, David says, “I feel a leadership responsibility to the church that has helped me grow so much spiritually.”

Chuck Wedzinga

Chuck is enjoying retirement after selling his business last year and says he is looking forward to his next adventure. He has been married to Cindy for 35 years and the couple has three children, Stephanie, Adrienne and Grant. Chuck and Cindy are also the proud grandparents of three grand-children. Chuck began attending Calvary about 12 years ago and was involved with the Building Committee, serving as its chair. When asked what his favourite Bible scripture is, Chuck says, “Isaiah 40:31. It means a great deal when I’m stressed, pressured and just wore out.” In the com-munity, Chuck has served as a board member with the Cambridge North Rotary Club.

It’s a common scene in the movies. The hero is on the cell phone being dressed down by his superior. He doesn’t like the message so he starts to pretend the signal is being lost. “Sorry... (garble... sputter...) think I’m losing you (more garble). Talk to you (sputter) later.” And he clicks off.

Does prayer ever feel that way to you? Like God just isn’t on the line… or he’s eager to get off... or you can’t seem to get him to pick up? Maybe the most guilt-producing dimension of the Christian life, prayer seems about as exciting as getting hair curlers for Christmas or a bucket of worms for Valentine’s Day. Why is prayer so hard?

There are several answers to that question, each of which highlights a fundamental misunderstanding about prayer.

I Want Results...The first problem here is “I want...” Prayer, it turns out, isn’t primarily about what we want, as though God were some cosmic genie, and prayer was the way we rub him out of the heavenly bottle to grant our three wishes. That doesn’t mean that prayer doesn’t involve ‘making our requests known to God’ (Phil. 4:6). But prayer is first about a relationship, not results. We tend to be practical about prayer. If it works, fine; if not, let’s move on. But God is more personal than that. He’s after your heart.

...And I Want Them NowConnected to our insatiable pragmatism is relentless concern about the clock. Not only do I want results, I want them immediately. And why shouldn’t I expect that kind of urgency from God? After all my needs are usually time sensitive! But it’s one of the stubborn facts of life that you can’t microwave a fine wine, you can’t grow an oak from an acorn overnight, and you can’t nurture a relationship with the Almighty in a minute. It’s not about the length of our prayers so much as the long view of our love. Like friendship or marriage, devotion grows over time: days, months, and years.

It was the perspective of decades that allowed the Psalmist to pray this way, “Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your mar-vellous deeds. Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.” (Psalm 71:17-18).”You’re not building a Lego life, you’re working on an eternal destiny. Lego takes a minute, eternity... well... a little longer.

Dead ZonesI hate it when I’m on my hands free and the signal just cuts out. My Blackberry makes this obnoxious noise just to tell me “call was lost.” Then my wife often adds to my frustration by observing that “maybe we’re in a valley.” Does it sometimes seem like we’re driving through a dead zone with God, too? He feels so distant and silent. But more often than not, it’s like the man driving with his wife beside him. She was complain-ing that he had stopped sitting close to her, holding her hand, rubbing her knee. He looked at the steering wheel, looked at his wife and asked, “Who moved?”

When we’re feeling we’ve moved into a dead zone with God, it’s likely because we’ve neglected him. The best way closer is called worship. This is why both David and Mary, the mother of the Jesus, invite us to ‘magnify’ the Lord with them. That means to give God his appropriate greatness will mean making him larger in our eyes than we actually see him. Like objects in your rear-view mirror, God is larger than he appears. When we give God his due, we become worshippers, and all of a sudden our dead zones vanish.

Prayer is the only way you and I have to let God know how we’re feeling about our crises. It’s always impor-tant to be transparent with our needs. But when we think prayer is a grocery list for God to fill out, we’ll soon lose the delight and purpose of prayer. Then all we’ve got is a cell phone on the fritz. Useless... and joyless.

Calvary Lawyer Offers Free Legal Clinic

Helen Gladkykh practiced law in Belarus for 4 years. Since she and her husband, Denys, came to Canada, she worked as a law clerk in Toronto, then returned to law school at the University of Windsor, and graduated in 2010. She has been practicing law in Cambridge since that time.

Helen has been attending Calvary for 9 years, so some of you may know her already. “I’m often asked for legal advice of all kinds,” Helen says. “I thought it would be great for the church to have a free clinic that offers some basic legal guidance on topics of real estate, estate and wills, litigation, corporate as well as family law.” Helen will be providing an open time for people to make appointments to see her at the church. Her counsel will be general, but may assist people looking for help understanding the legal system as it relates to their needs. She also accepts Legal Aid Certificates.

Calvary’s pastor, David Courey, is thrilled with Helen’s offer. “I think it’s a win-win! Helen is offering her gifts to serve God, and folks will have the benefit of her professional advice.”

Helen will be offering free consultations two times a month on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. If the demand becomes steady, she will be offering consultations every week. Contact with Helen can be made by calling her directly at 519.721.1818 (please specify that you were referred by the church for a free consultation).

Death and Taxes The Message of Moneyby David Courey

Mark Twain once quipped, “The only two certainties in life are death and taxes.” He was right. I love the commercial where the teaching doc is taking his students on their rounds, finds a guy on a gurney lying on his side, and lifts the cover for all but us to survey the man’s posterior. The faces of the students register varying states of disgust as the attending physician comments, “That’s tax pain. Nothing you can do about that.”

Humanity has experienced a long history of dodging taxes. So it comes as no sur-prise that when his opponents tried to trap Jesus, they asked him a question about taxes. “Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” (Luke 20:20-22) They knew they had him on the run. If he said “yes,” he would lose popularity with the crowd who hated the Romans. If he said “no,” he was guilty of sedition. The Romans would not be amused.

So Jesus, as usual, said something stunning in its significance, and sly in its effect. He asked them to show him a coin. Maybe one of the sharper guys in the crowd saw something coming, but a Roman denarius was immediately produced. “Whose image and inscription do you see on it?” Jesus asked.

Now a few of the other guys were feeling the tables turn. The answer probably came from one of those guys who would stick his hand up in the classroom and go, “Oh! Oh!” A faceless voice blurted, “Caesar’s.”

That name condemned them all. It was their coin, from one of their pockets. So were they collaborators themselves? Or did they want to back off, and risk sounding like conspirators? You could hear a pin drop as Jesus spoke.

“Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” Profound words.

There’s no getting around money. It’s part of living in a fallen world. Is it necessarily evil? Actually, money is one piece of God’s plan for restraining evil. “The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” (1 Tim. 6:10). Money itself provides the possibil-ity for all of us to get the things we need in a complex world system.

But never forget whose image is on that loonie, and what crest is on that bill. Whether we like it or not, we are intertwined with a vast political-economic system. The tension for every Christ-follower is how do I navigate that maze maintaining the purity of Jesus when I am so complicit with its injustices?

Jesus said while we are here, we should render to Caesar what is Caesar’s. We live in the world, but we don’t need to be swallowed up by it. Do business with integrity. Pay your bills quickly. Pay your taxes gladly.

But there’s one more thing Jesus said.

Render to God what is God’s. When you look at your soul, whose image do you see? You were created in the image of God. (Gen. 1:27) Since then sin shattered that image, and not a day goes by that you and I aren’t reminded that the shards of God’s image in our lives are sharp. Just ask the people you live with. They’ve probably been sliced a time or two.

The miracle of the gospel is the healing of God image in our lives. Paul says that Christ-followers have “put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator”. (Col 3:10)

So money is a constant reminder of two realities for the believer. Though I am deeply intertwined with this world system, I don’t belong to that system. I need to remember that when envy kicks in, and when I consider kingdom giving.

The second truth is just as probing. I’ve been marked. Not only do I not belong to the system, I no longer own myself, I’ve been claimed by another. Whenever I see the Queen’s image stamped on my coins, I’m reminded of the King’s image stamped on my soul. My life is his, and death, as certain as it may be, cannot conquer that!
