Simon Says One afternoon, many years ago, a little girl called Hattie May sat crying on the steps outside Sunday School. In those days Sunday Schools were really popular – so popular that the children had to have a ticket to get into them! And although Hattie May lived near the Sunday School it was so crowded, that there was no room for her, and there were never any spare tickets because they were only for children whose parents belonged to the church – and her mum and dad weren't members. So every week she waited outside the building to see if she could get in – and every week she was disappointed. But on this particular afternoon the minister found her sitting on the steps. He took her inside and found a seat for her at the back of the hall. And because she'd had a place that week she was given a ticket for the next week and she soon became a regular member of the Sunday School. Hattie May and the minister became quite friendly and he would chat with her whenever he saw her. 'You know,' he said one day, 'I'd love to be able to buy a new building, somewhere that's big enough to hold everyone.' He sighed deeply. 'But it's impossible, it would cost far too much money.' Hattie May enjoyed going to Sunday School and made friends with the children there. Sadly, two years later she became very ill and before long she died. The minister was asked to take her funeral and when he came round to visit the family, the little girl's mother gave him a worn-out purse with some coins in it. She told him that Hattie May had been saving money to help build a bigger church. The minister opened the purse and found just 57 cents inside. This doesn't seem much nowadays, and even then it was only a small amount of money, but it was a lot for a poor family in those days and Hattie had saved it up by doing all sorts of little jobs for her neighbours. The minister was very touched by Hattie's gift and the next Sunday he told the congregation all about her story. When they heard how much she'd wanted to go to Sunday School the congregation realised that they must try to get a new building, so they decided to start raising some money. First of all, Hattie May's fifty-seven cents

were sold, one at a time, and that raised $250. A committee was set up to raise more money and before long they had enough to buy a nearby house. Then the money began to flow in, until they had enough to build several more classrooms. Because they didn't want to waste the rooms the house was used for some university classes during the week – and these classes were the start of what is now a huge university in America, called Temple University. Hattie May had realised that nothing is impossible if you really believe it can be done. The minister's 'impossible' dream has come true, and has grown more than anyone could have ever imagined. You see, nothing is impossible with God. So I think you can sit and read this and wonder what does God use me for? There is so much in the news to dwell upon and feel helpless. But there is also prayer and action which can be done. We can help in the smallest move towards helping; spiritually through prayer; mentally by dwelling; writing and talking about a given situation; physically by giving time or resources. What can be achieved? There is war and conflict in Syria and Sudan. There are people in need in those place, while still others flee the chaos and violence. There are places where natural disaster have hit, the violence of hurricanes and earth quakes. So much

happening and yet as with the poor man Lazarus in the other week’s readings, the worst thing we can do, like the rich man in the same reading, is to be indifferent. At home, simply being Christian to those around us—nurturing that Spirit in us that takes us alongside people is so important. Over the last weeks I have had a number of conversations with church members who in the simplest conversations have been asked to remember, pray for individuals and situations. The smallest and most insignificant member of the body of Christ has potential with God’s help to change and mould and make a difference within this world. How small do you feel?

Commemoration of the Faithfully Departed Sunday November 30th at 03.00pm

This moving service is for anyone who wishes to remember loved ones who have died. I will have written inviting the families who have had a bereavement in the last year or so, but anyone who wishes to remember someone is invited to a simple service. There is already a list at the back of church to write down names of those who will be remembered and this can be added to right up to the evening concerned. During the service the people present are invited to come forward and light a candle to signify the love and memory of individuals. As well as very moving this service is designed to look past the funeral to the Christian faith in a God who holds us both in life and death.

The ten commandments on two tablets And the Lord gave Moses ‘tablets’, one was an IPad, the other an

Android based tablet. God’s word for all His people!

The Parish Treasurer was going through the church finances and found a receipt from a local ironmonger’s store signed by someone called Christian. He was not aware of anyone being authorised to buy anything from this store, so he rang the shop to point out its mistake. “I’m sorry” he said to the store manager “but I think you have the wrong number. This is the Parish Church and there are no Christians here.” From ‘The Server’ magazine.

CHRISTIAN ‘OLDIE’ JOKE Most seniors never get enough exercise. In His wisdom God decreed that seniors become forgetful so they would have to search for their glasses, keys and other things, thus doing more walking. And God looked down and saw that it was good. Then God saw there was another need. In His wisdom He made seniors lose coordination so they would drop things requiring them to bend, reach and stretch. And God looked down and saw that it was good. Then God considered the function of bladders and decided seniors would have additional calls of nature requiring more trips to the bath-room, thus providing more exercise. And God looked down and saw that it was good. So if you find, as you age, you are getting up and down more, remember it is God’s will. It is all in your best interest even though you mutter under your breath. Nine important facts to remember as you grow older: 1. Death is the number one killer in the world. 2. Life is sexually transmitted. 3. Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can

die. 4. Men have two motivations: hunger and hanky panky, and they

can’t tell them apart. If you see a gleam in his eyes, make him a sandwich.

5. Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to use the internet and they won’t bother you for weeks, months, maybe years.

6. Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the hospital, dying of nothing.

7. All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.

8. In the 60’s, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

9. Life is like a jar of jalapeno peppers. What you do today may be a burning issue tomorrow.

A friend gave this to me – he must have mistakenly assumed I was old!!.

NEWS FROM THE PCC Future plans. No further developments. The PCC would love to hear your reactions so far. Before we go too far into this project, we are hoping to visit a church where similar alterations have been done. This will give us a better feel for how it would work. Health and Safety. We are still wishing to appoint a Health and Safety Officer to make regular checks around the church. Any volunteers? Mothers’ Union. We are now enrolling members. Also members from other parishes and area MU leaders will be coming. Ethiopians. They will be using St Paul’s in Mirfield for their summer devotions and possibly for Sundays after that on an ongoing basis. Finance. We are negotiating a further three year contract with the Keys Restaurant. Nothing more to report on the negotiations surrounding the sale of our car-park. We have advertised for a new Choral Director to replace Daniel. We are now processing the gift aid claims on a monthly basis which brings in a regular income of around £500 per month to help with our cash flow.

WARNING CAR PARKING ON SUNDAYS

Please be aware that parking is NOT allowed directly outside the church, even on Sundays, without a permit of which there are very few. Traffic wardens do work in this area on Sunday mornings. They also love to catch people in the disabled areas without a blue badge as I found out to my cost. You can park almost anywhere else free of charge until 12.00 (not a minute over though). So be warned!! Editor

Helping in the life of St. Peter’s

I’m sure, like me you will have noticed that there is a buzz around the life of St Peter’s at the moment. Our attendances for worship have gone up and also other events are busy. It is good to have a new Bible study group established and the Mothers’ Union. It is lovely to see all the children in Children’s Church and the atmosphere they add to our worship. We have seen an increase in the numbers on the electoral roll and there are more requests for baptisms also. It is interesting to reflect that since we have been praying for growth in the church and thinking about this issue, all this seems to have followed. We mustn’t be complacent or rest on our laurels though. We need to continue to be prayerful about growth and be prepared to act if circumstances present themselves to us. As a result of the growth within the church there is a need for each of us to look after our newer members. Could you help in any of the following areas: The Pastoral Care group – looking after each of us and particularly those who cannot attend church. Children’s Church - where we are regularly getting more than ten children attending. Servers - are under pressure as some of them are leaving. Sidespeople - increasingly busy at the back of church and it is hard to meet and greet everyone and not miss visitors or people worshipping with us for the first time. Saturday hosts - do a great job but again numbers on the rota need to increase. Kitchen crew - making drinks after the service. As we are thinking and praying about giving over the next few months, I

wonder if we should extend our range of giving to not only financial

giving, but also to include the giving of time and talents. Each of the

above areas needs more people to help. All of them have opportunities

within them for members of the church who want to give in this way.

Please think and pray about your own talents and if you feel moved to

help in any way then speak to any of the clergy or wardens for more

information. Mike

Coffee Morning Plus on the first Saturday every month

10am to 2pm While out shopping on the first Saturday in every month, pop in to St Peter’s for refreshments and a chat. Bring your friends and family. Its cheap and cheerful and very casual. We always have a cake stall with some delicious home made confectionary, and we usually

have a book stall outside, weather permitting .

FLYING THE FLAG - A SEQUEL

In response to a number of queries, the flag of St George is flown above the tower of the parish church to celebrate the Christian festivals: Christmas to Epiphany, Easter to Pentecost, the Feast of St Peter, and of course on Remembrance Sunday, plus other national occasions as and when appropriate. Incidentally, the flag pole was kindly donated by our church warden Dr Mike Bembridge and his wife Dr Jane Bembridge in thanksgiving for the safe delivery of their son Philip. So let’s keep the flag flying! David Earl

GENERATIONS OF GENEROUS GIVING

Thank you to all who give of their time, talents and money as custodians of the work of St Peter’s Church. We are preserving, developing and growing not only the fabric of the building but the spiritual life that the family of St Peter’s Parish Church brings to the town of Huddersfield. Such work continues that of many past generations who have worshipped and given of themselves. This year, as part of Leading Your Church in Growth, (LYCIG), we are commencing a Stewardship Campaign which is to continue over several months with the aims of growing in number, giving of our time and talents and securing our financial well-being. We would ask that you take a prayerful look at the following questions about the financial contribution you make to the Church: 1. Has your giving increased over the last few

years? If not why not?

2. Do you give regularly?

3. Do you pay tax? If so are you Gift Aiding?

4. Have you made a Will and given a legacy to the church?

We will, over the next few months, be providing further information about the finances of the Church. Hopefully, this information will help you, in part, to answer these questions. Will you be a generous giver in this generation? Alan R Eastwood Churchwarden On behalf of the Stewardship Group

CHURCH FLOWERS On Sunday 30 October at 03.00pm at Evensong we are commemorating our Faithfully departed. If you would you like to dedicate flowers in memory of a loved one, whilst they are in your thoughts, this would be a good time to do it. Or if you just want to celebrate something significant in your life, then sign the list at the back of the church and see Barbara Nightingale to make a donation.
