Hey everyone!

Thank you for continuously volunteering to help with fundraisers and local events. I love Key Club not because of the physical things we produce or the donations we generate, but rather the changes we make, the beliefs we hold, the lessons we learn, the actions we take, and the power we bring to our home, school, and community.

As of December 31, 2014, in Division 11, our club has performed the 5th highest number of service hours in the 2014-2015 service year and our club also has the 3rd most highest hours served per member. On the district level, in terms of service hours, our club is #33. There are over 200 clubs in the district. Congrats, guys! This is just our first full year as an official Key Club. We’ve updated the hours system. In December, we had many seasonal service opportunities. There was the Toy and Gift wrapping service and soup kitchen. In January, we will be starting a food can drive. We had our first ever social event in December. Hopefully, there will be another social event in January.

There are several things we did achieve in December; we increased our membership to 33 members.

Our goal for January will be for every member to serve 10 hours. We hope to fundraise at least $200 towards the Eliminate Project and other various organizations like the Thirst Project. There will be a group social event if this is achieved. These numbers may seem intimidating at first, but we can definitely achieve 10 hours per member in the month of January. Although out club is one of the smallest in the number of clubs within our division, I know we can achieve above and beyond many other clubs because we’ve already been doing that. Lastly, it is important for us take breaks between our workload especially now since school has stared. Between school, family, and of course, Key Club, always find time to balance yourself and reflect upon your achievements. Enjoy what YOU have contributed to the club and enjoy your accomplishments as a leader. Request for help whenever you need. Remember that we are an inclusive team and you always have the support of your Key Club.

Alzheimer’s Bake SaleBy: Andy Tan

Alzheimer's Disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. Surprisingly, it causes more deaths than Breast and Prostate cancer combined. Every 67 seconds, someone in the United States develops Alzheimer's disease. Every 4 seconds, someone in the world is diagnosed with Alzheimer's. In order to spread awareness to end such deadly disease, the Fundraising Committee organized its first fundraiser in which 100% of the proceeds go to the Alzheimer’s Association. The Breakfast Sale was held on Wednesday, November 26th.

This event was successful since a lot of Key Clubbers brought in a lot of baked goods. Some of the goods sold included donuts, munchkins, bagels, croissants, muffins, and cereals. The Fundraising Committee gives a shout out to the Public Relations Committee for spreading the word out. Thanks to them, many customers, ranging from the Lower School to Upper School students, bought something for a great cause. Our fundraising goal was $100, but we raised over $150.

On November 22, 2014, the New York City Young Professionals of Kiwanis International hosted the 10th Annual Key to Your Future Day! It was a very pleasant experience. New York City Young Professionals of Kiwanis International sponsors three Key Clubs in our division. Those clubs are Fiorello H. LaGuardia Key Club, Hunter Key Club, and High School for Math, Science, and Engineering at City College (HSMSE) Key Club. The 10th Annual Key to Your Future Day took place in North Academic Center on the City College campus. The reason why I attended this meeting was because I wanted more tips on how to succeed during and after college.

During the event, I had the opportunity to meet many members of the NYC Young Professionals group. They taught me a lot about college. The workshops that I attended were “Writing Your First Resume”, “Preparing for an Interview”, “Financing Your Education”, “Choosing a College Major”, and “How to Network Effectively”. Everyone had a folder to take home containing helpful tips and shorthand advice about each workshop. There was also a mock interviews given to prepare people for college interviews in the future. Each participant was given a member of the Kiwanis to practice his or her interview skills. These Kiwanians have various professions ranging from finance, to medicine, journalism, media, and engineering. Practice questions were typical college interview questions. For example, “What do you do during your leisure time?”, “What have you done in high school that really stands out?”, and/or “If you were to describe yourself in three ways, how will you describe yourself?” The Kiwanians gave me useful feedback on what interviewees did well on, what to improve on, and what not to do for future interviews. Lastly, they served us Subway sandwiches, a bag of chips, and a can of soda for lunch. Hopefully, I will be able to attend NYC Young Professionals Kiwanis Club’s 11th Annual Key to Your Future Day! Every year, the Kiwanians try to add more workshops to help improve the experience for future Key Club members by reading reviews of the previous Key to Your Future Days. Anyone who is interested in improving their future or receiving advice about college should definitely come to this event.

A vast amount of Key Clubbers from schools in Division 11 attended the Divisional Movie Fundraiser on November 29th, 2014 at AMC Loews 34th Street Theater. The movie being viewed was The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I. Each movie goer was asked to pay an amount of $10 to attend the event. Of course, this money was donated to a good cause, which was the Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation. Slowly but surely, all of us began to make our way towards the theater. Some claimed their seats early while others waited to purchase concessions prior to the inception of the film. Though, by 11:00am, everyone found their way to the theater and sat down for the matinée showing of Mockingjay Part I. Collective laughs and gasps could be heard throughout the entirety of the movie. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the time with their friends while reacting (and whispering to their neighbors) to some of more “stand-out” scenes. As an individual judging the content of the third cinematic installment of this series, I can say with up-most confidence that this movie was comparably more enjoyable than the previous two. The tension between the characters and the situations coupled with improved acting made for a comparably better experience for me as a viewer. Of course, as common tradition goes, everyone clapped as the movie culminated with the credits rolling across the screen. All of us proceeded to leave the theater, both pleased with what we watched and secure in knowing that our enjoyment translated to help for those in need of a cure for Lyme disease.

On December 16, 2014, ten NEST+m Key Club members attended the December Divisional Meeting. The meeting took place at Bronx High School of Science. Divisional meetings are usually a fun way to meet up with Key Club members. If you attend some events, you see familiar faces at other events (like divisional meetings) and eventually you might even consider them one of your closest friends later on. I believe divisional meetings are only really fun when you actually know people.

We created stuffed animals for Toys-for-Tots. This may come as a surprise, but one of the clubs in the school had actually donated to Toys-for-Tots in the past. One of the objectives of Toys for Tots is to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas. The organization collects new, unwrapped toys and

distributes those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community. I had purchased two stuffed animals so I could keep one stuffed animal and donate the other to Toys-for-Tots. Several NEST+m Key Club members filled it up for me. =DRayat and I represented NEST+m as delegates in the House of Delegates since each school can only have two delegates. The schools that were represented in the House of Delegates were Stuyvesant High School, Bronx High School of Science, Hunter College High School, HSMSE @ City College, LaGuardia High School, and lastly, NEST+m. The crewneck sales generated $946.00 in unexpected proceeds, when they switched from Hanes Brands Inc. to Gildan Activewear Inc.

Instead of distributing the funds to everyone, the Divisional Events Committee and Lieutenant Governor Aaron Cheung decided it will be best to use $400 of the $946 to charter Frank McCourt High School Key Club (the newest Key Club in our division) and then this is when the House of Delegates really plays a role. What will we do with the $546? It was between having a celebration at the end of service year for “Pi-Day” where the division purchases pies for everyone, donate to a charity, or let the Division Events Committee use the funds for future service events. Each delegate listened to the vote of the club members to make the final decision. We decided to donate the money to the Thirst Project and The Eliminate Project.

Overall, the event was enjoyable because I was able to see people that I had not seen for a while. The January divisional meeting will hopefully be at NEST+m on January 16, 2015. See you there!

What happened at the Division 11 House of Delegates:

(a) that $400 of profits raised, once said profits are realized, of crewneck sales to be put towards the charter of Frank McCourt High School Key Club – PASSED!(b) that, if $400 of said profits in (a) is not realized, all profits will be put towards subsidizing a future divisional project or event in the 2014-2015 service year, and(c) that, all remaining funds raised, once realized, Due to completing our Race to 10K, we would like to celebrate the success of the service year. One such proposal for the event is a “Pi-Day” celebration, which will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2014. It is, in the best interest of the division, to deliver this

celebration free of charge, or to be put towards subsidizing a future divisional project or event in the 2014-2015 service year will be donated to 501(c) (3) organizations which are the Thirst Project and the Eliminate Project. – PASSED!

On December 11, 2014, after school in Room 348, cards were being made to be sent to a hospital through a system called “Cards for Hospitalized Children”. With all the supplies necessary to create a card, (stickers, colorful paper, and markers) the only necessary thing to bring was myself and a couple of friends.

Making the cards allowed me and the other Key Clubbers to expresses our art skills (in which case, my non-existent ones) and our creativity to put a smile on a child’s face. Overall, it was something fun and enjoyable as we all had the company of our peers and friends as we worked. In the end, all the cards looked great and some were especially fancy with extra stickers and a showcase of amazing art work. Working from three to five p.m., we were able make a stack (a large stack of cards) waiting to be sent just the day after on the 12th of December.

Making the cards was such a fun experience, I couldn’t see it as work. It was way too fun to be considered work. I’m secretly hoping (maybe it’s not a secret) that we’ll be able to do something like this again.

Project HappinessBy: Kevin Hom

How often do you smile? A study done in 1999 found that the average person smiled 17 times a day. Starting last year, Key Club International teamed up with Project Happiness to do just that, smile. With bullying and depression on the rise, Project Happiness looks to build kindness, acceptance, empathy and gratitude. Since leadership, character building, caring and inclusiveness are part of Key Club’s core values, it is only fitting to have Key Club and its members support this movement. The Happiness Movement looks to make positive changes throughout the school environment such as stopping bullying. We should all strive to end all human suffering through our service, the way we present ourselves, and smiles.

Here are 10 tips from the Key Club International Magazine March Issue on how to add happiness into your life:

1. Know your strengths.2. Have a positive mindset.3. Give thanks for what you have.4. Make it contagious5. Just breathe.

6. Connect with others.7. Remember your body.8. Be kind.9. Find the flow.10. Choose a dream and don’t give up.

What is it Like to Be LTG?

Lillian Xie (Immediate Past Lieutenant Governor of Division 11 of NYDKC):“As the Immediate Past Lieutenant Governor of Division 11, I had the unique opportunity of serving eight clubs within The Bronx and Manhattan boroughs. Each month, I'd plan fundraisers, schedule interclub events, and serve as a liaison between the district and club board.

Thanks to the help of club officers and extraordinarily dedicated members from each of the clubs I worked with, I'm proud to say that I was able to help the best and most spirited division in Key Club International.”

Clifford Young (Lieutenant Governor of Division 9 of NYDKC):“Twelve months in the Kiwanis Family and I am grateful for everyone I’ve met. Eight months as Lieutenant Governor and it has been the most rewarding experience. As I began in ninth grade age has never held me back, but only propels me.”

Jae Shin (Lieutenant Governor of Division 17 of the New Jersey District):“The reason behind my desire to be LTG was pretty simple actually. I loved all the memories I made giving back to the world that I wanted each member in my division to experience the same joy I felt, and the best way for me to do that was to become the Lt. Governor. When you enter into a District Board position, you tend to find yourself participating in less events because of the workload.”

14

Page 17: NEST+m Key Club--Keystone Bi-monthly~~December Edition

Julia Dressler (Lieutenant Governor of Division 25 of NYDKC): “The main reason I ran for LTG is because I wanted to help make my division stronger. I also wanted to connect with all my clubs and work with them. I ran because I wanted to form personal and professional relationships.”

Aaron Cheung (Lieutenant Governor of Division 11 of NYDKC): “I ran for Lieutenant Governor because I wanted to get more involved in Key Club and submerge myself in the service of others. Key Club is a great organization that provides resources for leaders to take action for what they believe in. For me, I wanted to bring members from different schools closer together and diversify the types of

service project that the division participates in.”

Hanna Nicols (Lieutenant Governor of Division 16 of NYDKC): “I ran for Lieutenant Governor because of my love for the organization and I desire to play a bigger role in it. I wanted to have the experience of serving on both the club level the New York District Board. Running for Lieutenant Governor has been the best experience I have ever had; from running divisionals to planning LTC, it has

been so rewarding. I would highly recommend anybody interested to reach out to their current Lieutenant Governor.”

Herman Li (Past Lieutenant Governor of Division 11 of NYDKC): “I wanted to grow as a person through experiences like LTG, leadership skills and organization skills. Since being an LTG is not just providing your skills to the division, but the position nonetheless is you giving back to the division as well as giving yourself a learning experience.”
