Sincethepumptypicallyismountedonabellhousingorframe,thenoiselevelcanonlybedeterminedforthecompleteunit(system).Itisthereforeveryimportantthatthepumpismountedcorrectlyonaframewithdamperstominimizevibrationsandnoise.Furthermorethepumpdischargeshouldbeconnectedwiththeapplicationi.e.withaflexiblehigh-pressurehose.

Makesuretoobservetherecommendedmount-ingtolerancesfortheflexiblecouplingused,asanyaxialloadontheshaftmustbeavoided.
Qualityofwaterregardingpurityandchemi-cal/microbiologicalcompositiondependsontheoriginofthewaterasdescribedbelow.
Qualityofwaterforhydraulicsystemsisre-commendedtobeofatleastsamequalityasisrequiredfordrinkingwater.
Classification of water:Waterusedintapwaterhydraulicsystemsmaytypicallybeclassifiedinto3maingroups:
A) Raw waterRawwaterismostoftenwatercollecteddirectlyfromborings&wells.Usually,waterisexposedtoa”simple”process,suchasfiltration.Thequalityofrawwatermayvaryalot.Insomecases/placesitisalmostofdrinkingwaterquality,whereaswaterinothercases/placesmaycontainlargeamountsofochre,humus&plantremnants.
Therefore,itismostimportanttoanalyserawwaterintendedforacertainapplication.Typicalapplicationswhererawwatercanbeusedare:
• Fire-fightingequipment• Highpressurecleaner
Thefiltercapacityisanimportantparameterfortheseapplications,asthewatermaycontainlargeamountsofparticles,sand,ochreetc.
B) Drinking waterDrinkingwaterisexposedtoamuchmorecom-plexcleaningprocesscomparedtorawwater.Drinkingwateriseitherproducedonbasisofgroundwaterorsurfacewater(riversandlakes).Localauthoritiesareinchargeofcontrollingthewaterquality.
GroundWater:Thequalityofgroundwaterisnormallyveryfineandthusonlyminimumofprocessingisrequired.Typically,onlyfiltrationandventilationisappliedtoremoveaggressivecarbondioxide,ironandmanganese.
SurfaceWater(LakesandRivers):Inadditiontotheaboveprocessforgroundwater,itisessentialtodisinfectandprocessthiswaterfurther,assurfacewateriseitherchemi-callyormicro-biologicallycontaminated.Typi-cally,compoundsofchlorineareusedtodisinfectthewaterwhichmaygivethedrinkingwaterthecharacteristicafter-tasteofchlorine.Furthermore,UV-lightmaybeusedtosubstituteorsupplementthechlorineprocessing.
NB!Alwaysusedrinkingwaterfromthecold-watertaptominimizetheriskofmicrobiologicalcon-taminationofthewater.

Ifasystemrequiresantifreezeprotection,DanfossrecommendsDOWCALNorCHILLSAFEantifreezesbothbeingabiologicallydegradableMonoPropyleneGlycol.
(DOWCALNisproducedbyPOLO).(CHILLSAFEisproducedbyATCO).
ProducersofDOWCALNandCHILLSAFErecom-mendamixtureratioofmin.30%DOWCALN/CHILLSAFEtopreventbiofilmoccurrenceinthesystemduetoDOWCALNandCHILLSAFEbeingbiologicallyde-gradable.
Thefunctionofthewatertankistocontinuouslysupplycleanwater,divertheat,removeairandtoallowforvariationsofthewatervolume.
Minimumtankcapacityisdimensionedaccord-ingtothevolumerequiredforwatercooling,volumerequiredforcylinders,andrequestforwaterexpansion.Normally,atankcapacityof1-3timesthepumpflow(permin.)willbesufficientforclosedsystems.Foropen-endedsystemstherequirementis>0,7timesthepumpflow(permin.)aslongasthereisawaterrenewalof>15%ofthepumpflow.
Directthesuctionlinetothepumpbottom,approx.1.5timesthesuctionlinediameter“D”abovethebottomtopreventprecipitatedimpuri-tiesfrombeingsuckedin.Alwayskeepalltankconnections(suction,drainandreturn)belowwaterlevelinthetank.Drainandreturnlinestobeplacedasfarfromthesuctionlineaspossibleandpreferablyseparatedbyadividingplateinthetank.Besides,thesuction,drain,andreturnlinesmustbecutina45°angle(seeexample).

Disconnection:IftheinletlinetothepumpT-portisdiscon-nectedfromthewatersupply,thepumpwillbeemptiedofwater.Beforestartingthepumpagain,thestartingproceduredescribedintheStart-up-paragraphmustbefollowed.
Transport and Storage PrecautionsIfemptiedofwater,thesystemmustbepro-tectedagainstcorrosionwithaglycolmixture(minimum35%monopropyleneglycol).
Theprotectionmustbemadewithin2daysaftertheemptying.
Ifthereisriskofexposuretotemperaturesbelowthefreezingpointduringtransportorstorage,thesystemlikewisehastobeflushedwithaglycolmixture(minimum35%monopropyleneglycol).

Recommended procedure:1. Closedhydraulicsystemswithrecirculating
waterandopen-endedsystemswithwatersupplyfromtank:

a10µmabs.filter 1.3 Startupthesystem.Remembertobleed
thepump,ifrequired. 1.4 Requiredfunctionsareactivatedtobe
flushedwiththeglycolmixture 1.5 Surplusglycolisemptiedoffthesystem 1.6 Thepumpisnowprotectedagainst
internalcorrosionandfrost.
2. Open-endedsystemswithdirectwatersupply:2.1 Disconnectthewatersupplytothe pump/system.
2.2 Emptythepumpthroughthelower bleedingplug.Retightentheplugwhen thepumpisempty.
2.3 Connectthepumptoatankwithanti- freezeadditive.Connectahosetothe pumpP-portandtheotherendofthe hosebacktotank.
2.4 Quicklystartandstopthepump. Makesurethatthepumpdoesnotrun
dry. 2.5 Emptypumpofanti-freezemedium
(throughthelowerbleedingplug). Remountandretightenthebleeding plug,whenthepumpisempty.
2.6 Thepumpisnowprotectedagainst internalcorrosionandfrost.
Start-up: Thesystemhastobeflushedpriortostart–uptoremovepossibleimpuritiesfrompipes,hosesetc.Beforestartingthepump,thetopbleedingplug”C”isloosened.Whenwaterappearsfromthebleedingplug,thepumpisfilledwithwater,andtheplugisretightened.Makesurethatrotationdirectionofthepumpiscorrect.
Withitsinletlineconnectedtothewatersupplyorthetank,thepumpisnowstartedwithopenoutletP-port.Attheinitialstartofthesystem,thepumpshouldberunwithoutpressureforabout5minutestoremovepossibleimpuritiesfrompipes,hoses,etc.
Hydraulicsystemsmustbeflushedwitha3%cleaningagent-solutionformin.60minutes.Thenthesolutionisdischargedfromthesystemwhichissubsequentlycleanedwithpurewaterformin.30minutes(pleaseseeinstructionsfor”CleaningofWaterHydraulicSystems”.Finallythefilterischanged.
Safeguarding of Pump during Operation:Whenrunning,thepumpmustalwaysbecon-nectedtothewatersupplytopreventthepumpfromrunningdry.
Insystemswithwatertankitisrecommendedtobuildinalevelgaugewhichwillmakethepumpstopattoolowwaterlevel.
Inopen-endedsystemswithouttankitisrecom-mendedtobuildinapressureswitchbetweenfilterandpumpT-porttomakethepumpstopatmin.0.9barabstopreventthepumpfromrunningdry.
Forallsystemsitisrecommendedtoinstallatemperaturegaugeforstoppingthepumpwhenthetemperatureexceeds50°C.
Filter:Afterstart-upitisrecommendedtochangefilterelementafter1-10hours’operation.Subse-quently,thefilterelementischangedwhen‘cloggedfilter’isindicated.
