PLAYWICKIAN HONORED WITH TWO NATIONAL AWARDS
Congratulations to the 2013-2014 Playwickian editors and staff writers for receiving the Columbia Scholastic Press
Association’s Gold Medal Certificate of Excellence for High School Journalism. Both the print version of newspaper and The
Playwickian website www.playwickian.com received the accolade in the hybrid critique. The CSPA judges stated, “Wonderful
diversity in topics covered throughout each issue; outstanding coverage that is audience relevant. It is obvious how much
hard work and time are devoted to the multiple elements of both the print and digital editions of The Playwickian."
“You can be very proud of producing a newspaper devoted to being a forum for student opinion as well as providing a service
to your school by informing and entertaining your readers. However, the most significant achievement by the paper is its
strong sense of editorial leadership on all topics, not just the Redskins issue. It's very impressive.”
The CSPA has evaluated The Playwickian for the past 38 years, and the publication has received a Gold Medal for 26 of
those years.
On February 6, the Playwickan staff was again honored by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, winning the 2015
Edmund J. Sullivan Award.
The Sullivan Award is a national award and recognizes student editors who pursue innovative ways to present the truth on
behalf of their audiences. Sullivan Award recipients also demonstrate extraordinary idealism, resilience and pragmatism while
trying to serve students in their audiences. Specifically, the Playwickian’s honor is due to their editorial leadership on the topic
of the designated mascot for the school’s athletic teams.
The Playwickian editors will be honored along with the Foothill Dragon Press Editorial Board from Ventura, California for their
efforts to speak out and take action in support of the Neshaminy students and their editorial rights. The Foothill Dragon Press
launched an online awareness and fundraising campaign (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/free-the-playwickian ) in
support of the editors receiving donations from around the country and around the world.
The Award will be presented during the Student Awards Convocation held in at Columbia University in New York City,
beginning at 2:30 pm on Friday, March 20, 2015.
