Gover nment and Politics
Until 1990, Nepal was a monarchy running under the executive control of the king.
The movement in April 2006 brought about a change in the nation's governance: and
a republic was formed.
On December 10, 2007, the interim parliament passed a bill that would make Nepal a
federal republic, with the Prime Minister becoming head of state.
Nepal has also been noted for its recent speed of development, such as being one of
the few countries in Asia to abolish the death penalty

Histor y
Neolithic tools found in the Kathmandu Valley indicate that people have been living in the Himalayan region for at
least 9,000 years.
After a peace treaty with Britan in the late 1800·s, Nepal·s size began to shrink due to many feuds with neighboring
countries.
After the treaty, Nepal·s government became very closed with little foreign influence, besides Britian.
Gurkha·s or nepalese army units helped Britan during WWII. (Encyclopedia Americana)
Political stability during the 1950·s seemed elusive for Nepal.
Throughout the next 50 years government parties battled for power.
No open political parties, Public did not have a say in the government.
Government was mainly run by kings and their family and political party.

Flag
Its crimson red is the color of the rhododendron, the country's national flower. Red is also the sign of victory in war.
The blue border is the color of peace. Until 1962, the flag's emblems, the sun and the crescent moon, had human
faces. They were removed to modernize the flag. The faces remained on the sun and the moon on the Royal
Standard until the abolition of the monarchy in 2008.
