WELCOME TO NENAGH ArTS CENTrE JANUAry TO MArCH 2013Welcome to our January – March programme 2013. Although the days are short and cold at the moment, we have plenty of fascinating fare to take you through to spring. There’s music for everyone this season; the legendary Fureys and Davey Arthur are playing in February, or if you fancy something sublime, the fantastic Jerry Fish will be here in March along with the album launch of exciting local band Silent Noise Parade.

We have a special selection of films including the brooding German cold war drama Barbara, and the exciting American documentary Detropia, both of which I can heartily recommend. We’re also hosting the Nenagh Silent Film Festival in February – check our website for the full listing.

Our theatre programme continues with If I Told You… by local actor Aoife Carry, comedians The Nualas and a lovely musical reflection on the life of Irish ballad singer Delia Murphy – I’ll Live ’Till I Die.

We look forward to seeing you at the centre!

I’M NOT SCArED

Dir: Gabriele Salvatores | Italy, Spain, UK | 2004 | 110mins | 15 (UK Cert)

It’s the hottest summer in living memory, in Apulia, a village in southern Italy. All the adults have taken to the cool indoors leaving the children to run wild through the corn fields. When nine year old Michele discovers a starving boy shackled in a hole, his life is forever changed. He gradually befriends the boy and wants to help him, but when a visitor from the north arrives and his habitually absent father returns home suddenly, Michele pieces together a frightening conspiracy, that runs right to the heart of his family.

IF I TOLD yOU… “D’ya ever wonder if nuns get nun tracksuits…you know, the way we did in school?”

You know that voice inside your head that tells you not to say something; what would happen if it stopped? Susie is a stressed out yoga teacher. Clare is a successful businesswoman. They know everything about each other, they talk about everything and they share everything. Now Clare is expecting their first child. With motherhood looming they are excited, scared, happy, and not telling each other everything. Written and directed by Aoife Carry and starring Joanne Quinn. This is the first collaboration by these two local actresses, and they would love you to join them in their quirky comedy, set in the rollercoaster of… normal life.

DETrOPIADir: Heidi Ewing, rachel Grady | USA | 2012 | 90mins | Club

Detropia sculpts a dreamlike collage of a grand city teetering on the brink of dissolution. As houses are demolished by the thousands, automobile-company wages plummet, institutions crumble, and tourists gawk at the

“charming decay,” the film’s vibrant, gutsy characters glow and erupt like flames from the ashes. These soulful pragmatists and stalwart philosophers strive to make ends meet and make sense of it all, refusing to abandon hope or resistance. Their grit and pluck embody the spirit of the Motor City as it struggles to survive post-industrial America and begins to envision a radically different future.

NENAGH SILENT FILM FESTIVALNenagh has always been a great town for cinema, what with the old Rialto cinema and the current Ormond; even the Town Hall (Arts Centre) was a cinema in the past.

Nenagh’s Silent Film Festival presents a weekend programme of events focussing on one of the golden ages of cinema – the silent era . Hand-cranked cameras, heavy make-up, natural light were all hallmarks of the period – not to mention some of the most iconic imagery ever. Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, Murnau and local native Rex Ingram created the film language we now take for granted. This programme celebrates their work in film and workshop.

HIrING THE BUILDINGIf you need a space big or small, for a meeting, class , workshop or a performance Nenagh Arts Centre has the space to suit you. Our theatre has the capacity to hold 216 people seated and with state-of-the-art sound and lighting facilities and additional technical support available, it makes sense to hire space at your local Arts Centre. Groups who have hired space here include; Nenagh Chamber of Commerce, Nenagh Players, Conradh na Gaeilge and the Convergence Festival. To find out more, contact us on 067 34400 or [email protected].

DELIA MUrPHy: I’LL LIVE ’TIL I DIEA reflection and musical show on the life of renowned Irish ballad singer Delia Murphy

HOLy MOTOrSDir: Leos Carax | France | 2012 | 115mins | Cert: 16

Following the exploits of the mysterious Monsieur Oscar from dawn till dusk, we are taken on a dreamlike limousine ride through the streets of Paris. Oscar (Denis Lavant) adopts a series of diverse personae whom he takes on a sequence of surreal adventures. He becomes a Quasimodo-like figure stowing a beautiful model away in his sewer layer, then in the blink of an eye he becomes an old gypsy crone begging by the Seine, then a ninja warrior metamorphosing into a reptilian god. This film is a feverish visual flight of imagination and is compiled beautifully by esteemed director Leos Carax. The written word can never do it justice-Holy Motors is a feast for the eyes that needs to be seen to be believed!

ON THE rOADDir: Walter Salles | Brazil, France, UK, US | 2012 | 124mins | 16

Based on the Kerouac novel that came to define the beat generation, director Walter Salles’ On The Road delivers a fast paced whirl through the jazz and hedonism of American counterculture in the 1950’s. Aspiring writer Sal Paradise (Sam Riley) is catapulted into a world of music, drugs and poetry when he hits up with the charismatic Dean Moriarty (Garett Hedlund) and his sixteen year old wife Marylou (Kirsten Stewart). Determined not to live a generic and boring life, the three friends take to the road, on a journey of freedom and discovery.

THE NUALAS: ONE NIGHT OF DIGNITyIreland’s top all-female comedy singing sensations The Nualas are legging it down to Nenagh for a night of laugh-your-head off, wet-your-pants, pass-out-from-the-glamour

-of-it-all entertainment. In a world where pop stars think nothing of singing in their underwear, The Nualas buck the trend by sporting proper yet unbelievably - and shiny stage attire. You’ll hear Nuala favourites like ‘Manolo’ alongside fabulous all-new classics, such as ‘Sexy Farm Song’, and ‘Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, Why Am I So Fat?’. Expect scintillating vocal harmony, ambitious choreography, bags of bling, and a night packed solid with craic, laughter, tears, and chat (not necessarily in that order).

“The Nualas have put comedy and music in a blender and come up with a world class soufflé.” The Times, London.
