Born on December 12, 1858 in San Jose, Bulacan,Hernandez-Peña was the youngest of the three children of a poor family. His parents were Marcos Hernandez, a village platero or goldsmith, and Dominga de la Peña, a seamstress. As a child, Hernandez began showing signs of his literary talents and of his inherent gentle nature. He acquired his early education by reading the cartilla for hours under the tutorship of Marcelino Nuque, his family’s old friend and neighbour and so at the age of 10 , he already knew how to read and write in Tagalog. He was also fond of reading the catechism.

He enrolled in a public school and finished his elementary education. Although fluent in Spanish, he seldom used it because of his great love for Tagalog. When his father died, he had stop his schooling. At age 12, he already had to help support his mother and sisters. Five years after his father’s death, his mother passed away. He assumed the responsibility of being the sole support of his sisters. His delicate handwriting helped him to get a position as court clerk in the municipality of Bulacan, Bulacan. Later, he transferred to the provincial capital, Malolos to do the same job.-wikipilipinas

In 1900 Hernandez joined the staff of Ang Kaluwagan which was in the same year replaced by Kapatid ng Bayan, founded by Pascual Poblete. In the pages of this periodical appeared Hernandez’s novels, Unang Bulaklak (First Bloom), Pahimakas ng Isang Ina (A Mother’s Farewell), Miminsan Akong Umibig, Isang Dukha, and others. In 1903, at age 45, he married Victoria Laktaw, 10 years his senior. She was the relative of Pedro Serrano Laktaw, the author of a Spanish-Tagalog and Tagalog-Spanish dictionary.

He also write notable short stories: Kamandag ng Pagasa, Isang Halik Lamang, Lihim ng Pagibig and Babaying Walang Turing. His major novels are : Si Rosa at si Valerio, Hatol ng Panahon (Verdict of Time), Sari-saring Kasaysayan in 1909 and Ang Kasawian ng Unang Pagibig in 1915. And also letter poems such as Ang Luha mg Panulat and Ang Banal na Naurong.

Hernandez’s literary obsession was to point out the problems besetting our country. This is evident in Mag Inang Mahirap, Mga Tinik ng Bulaklak, Dangal ng Magulang and Hatol ng Panahon. However, he had been assisting Marcelo H. del Pilar through his novels such as Pagluha ng Matuwid and Bunga ng Maling Pag-iimbot, in which he indirectly attacked the misdeeds of the friars.
