By definition, a distillery is a place where spirits are manufactured. However, Distillery 031 is so
much more than that. Opening its doors late last year in the Station Drive Precinct, Distillery 031 started out by creating a range of independent, Durban-distilled, limited-edition artisan spirits including vodka, gin and absinthe as well as accompanying cordials such as all-natural tonic water. Since then, Durban entrepreneur and independent distiller Andrew Ral has opened the venue up to the public with the addition of the 031 Bar & Restaurant.
This intimate restaurant and bar area allows patrons to get a taste of these locally produced spirits, as well as top-notch mezzes, meals and cocktails. Surrounded by the working distillery, customers are treated to contemporary food created by husband and wife duo, Jordan and Nat Semple. These UK-trained chefs are renowned for their adventurous menus and take care in sourcing local ingredients to create meals that complement the restaurant’s selection of signature cocktails. By raising the stakes with the addition of two international chefs, Distillery 031 also made sure to offer the best cocktails by bringing on board mixologist Jason Andrew. He’s responsible for shaking and stirring up a range of refreshingly original cocktail mixes (using home-made spirits, of course).
The cherry on the top of this perfect blend of good food and drink has to be the live music at Distillery 031 every first Thursday of the month. Known as The Still Sessions, the venue has opened its doors to a variety of local acts including Dan Patlansky and Ildo Nandja.
The 031 Bar & Restaurant is open Thursday to Saturday for lunch (noon to 3pm) and dinner (6pm to 10pm). You can check out The Still Sessions on the first floor of The Foundry, 43 Station Drive.

Work starting on Tshwane Regional Mall
Construction of the Tshwane Regional Mall begins this month, according to the
Public Investment Corporation (PIC) and Isibonelo Property Services. Building costs of the mall are estimated at R996m, with part of the funding provided by the PIC.
The mall was called a catalytic project at the Tshwane International Trade and Infrastructure Investment Conference in May. It is expected to change the shopping experience for residents of Mamelodi and surrounding areas.
It is close to transport routes and 3,000 taxis are expected to operate on site daily. There are also plans to link the mall with other transport

SA’s priciest home fetches nearly R300m
A Bantry Bay home sold for R290m in May, the priciest residential property in
South Africa, according to sellers Denise Dogon, CEO, Dogon Group Properties, and partners Adrien Epstein and Vicky Atlas.
The modern house by design and architecture company Saota, has state-of-the-art finishes throughout and luxurious accommodation. The property takes up three erven comprising 5,200m2 on Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard. It was bought fully furnished and kitted.
Epstein says the buyer is a German industrialist who is “very happy with his purchase”.
Hotel boom in AfricaThis year is considered the year
for growth in the tourism sector across Africa. The
number of international visitors to Africa is foraecasted to reach the 85 million mark by 2020.Further to the recent news on Radisson Blu opening in Umhlanga, Durban, hotel group Carlson Rezidor has just announced three new hotels to be rolled out in Africa: in Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Mauritius.
Africa is considered the biggest growth market for the hotel group, with Carlson Rezidor signing a new hotel deal in
Africa every 37 days and opening a new hotel in Africa every 60 days. “Africa is by far our biggest growth market,” says Wolfgang M Neumann, president and CEO of The Rezidor Hotel Group. Carlson Rezidor also announced the signing of its first Quorvus Collection in Africa: the five-star, 244-room luxury Emerald Grand Hotel & Spa in Lagos, Nigeria.
The group also signed a new Radisson Blu Hotel Harare in Zimbabwe (245 rooms) and a Park Inn by Radisson in Quatre Bornes, the new commercial hub of Mauritius.

Move over, golf estate living, the new trend in South African
property is game reserve living, and with two new residential game reserves near Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, Intaba Ridge Private Game Estate and Mayibuye Game Estate, this lifestyle is now available to locals.

The estate has an exclusive community centre, swimming pool, tennis court, play and braai areas, boma and watering hole and a wealth of wildlife including wildebeest, impala, blesbok, reedbuck, duiker, zebra and endangered oribi.

Q: How did your business start?A: My husband and I decided to
choose country over city – he’d continue his work as a management consultant, and I’d give up the magazine industry. The Midlands would be the perfect space in which our young daughter could grow up. She was accepted at Clifton Prep in Nottingham Road, and a very close friend found us the perfect cottage to rent on a smallholding in Lidgetton. I’ve always been creative, but my career didn’t lend itself to that, so this was my chance. Caversham Textiles was my first stop as it is virtually our neighbour, and it was love at first sight – seeing such stunning prints and colours. After many conversations with Sally, Malcolm and Ros, my path was forged. I offered them my services as an agent. Having been in sales all my life, I knew this was a product I could promote and sell. And with my magazine industry background, I could also assist with marketing and PR.
Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop?

D esigning green buildings isn’t purely about installing energy-saving elements. It’s
about the orientation of the home, ventilation to capitalise on cool breezes and reduce heat, the role of ceilings, smart materials better adapted for heating or cooling, and, of course, using recycled materials.
Start with the basics. New technology is far more energy-efficient than old, so do your homework when replacing your fridge, freezer and so on, and examine the Energy Star ratings when buying new appliances. Consider a heat pump – and/or repositioning a geyser adjacent to where the hot water’s required, so there’s no cold water wasted while you wait for the hot. Installing long-lasting LED bulbs also makes a difference – buy a reputable brand that delivers on its promise on the number of hours of light.

And don’t underestimate the value that prospective home-buyers place on smart alternative energy sources like a heat pump, solar geysers or panels. They are all worthwhile investments. Given that some municipalities are effectively “buying back” surplus energy you generate, and that residential time-of-use tariffs are on the cards (more expensive electricity during peak periods), electricity saving is more than green. It could get you out of the red.
If you’re serious, bring in an expert and get a home energy rating. They’ll tell you what’s achievable, and set priorities according to your budget. You’ve got nothing to lose, and plenty to gain.

A: Berea has a wide range of primary and high schools as well as creches and colleges. The area is notably also home to the Durban University of Technology and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. A: The majority of first-time buyers with two reasonable incomes and a clean credit profile can purchase their dream home in Berea. Durban’s Berea is one of those places that has something for everyone, no matter what

The suburb’s popularity and desirability have always driven prices and for a long time, the Berea was regarded as Durban’s most expensive suburb. Times have, however, changed and although Umhlanga and Durban North now top KwaZulu-Natal’s property price list, there are still many who are willing to pay a premium to live here.
An area that once housed Durban’s elite, has now been transformed into one that offers good shopping, great views and an array of tempting restaurants. Thanks to its location it’s also close to just about everything that Durban has to offer. The nearby arterial routes make getting to the centre of town an absolute breeze, and it’s also relatively easy to hop on the
Ruth First Highway and wend your way to Durban North and beyond.
The suburb is home to one of the oldest schools in the country, Durban High School (founded in 1866), as well as Durban Girls’ College, a highly regarded private institution. Other schools in the area include Berea Primary School and Maris Stella School.
Perhaps one of the biggest drawcards, particularly for the younger set, is what the area offers on the entertainment front. The Musgrave and Berea shopping centres offer great opportunities to indulge in a bit of retail therapy, and there are a host of eateries and several movie theatres nearby. Eating out is a favourite pastime for Durbanites and the Berea certainly doesn’t disappoint as far as choices go. The Little India Restaurant in Musgrave, Fusion World Food Cafe, and Market restaurant are just some of the options available for locals to enjoy. Nearby Glenwood and Morningside have a large number of establishments to tempt you out of your kitchen.
