Nehru Trophy Boat Race – End Polio Rotary Club of Alleppey East sponsored a “Chundan Vallam” for Rs 5 Lakhs. This was done for publicizing Rotary’s End Polio campaign in the world famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race held at Punnamada Lake. Rtn Major Donor Sabu Joseph donated a substantial amount for sponsoring the Vallam to the club. Dist Governor Rtn KS Sasikumar, first lady Rtan Renu Sasikumar and Dist Secretary General Rtn Shirish Keshavan joined Rotary Club of Alleppey East along with the visiting Rotarians from Coimbatore Tex City for this event. Nehru Trophy Boat race at Punnamada, Alappuzha is one of the most significant and colourful boat races in Kerala. It is a world renowned event, held annually on the second Saturday of the month of August in the Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha. On the day of this fiercely fought boat race, the tranquil lake front is transformed into a sea of humanity with an estimated two lakh people, including tourists from abroad for watching it. Boats of all sizes compete in different events in the boat race. Kerala celebrated its 62 nd Nehru Trophy Boat Race on 9 th August 2014. The most prestigious and interesting event among the races is the competition of the "Chundan Vallam" where the silence of the lake is sliced by the slashing oars of the pacing boats. These majestic boats measuring a length of 30 to 40 metres (over 100 ft) with a raised prow, are quite impressive and can accommodate around 100 rowers, 4 helmsmen and 25 cheer leaders. The boats are well decorated with colourful trimmings and umbrellas during the race. The water festival in Kuttanad is unique. No other country in the world has such festivities. The large number of participants in the racing boat marks its uniqueness and no other sport in the world has such a large number of participants in a team. The synchronized way of rowing needs long and devoted training and inherenot aptitude. Those who steer the vessel need thorough knowledge of water

The most notable fact in the races of boats is that a single neglected act of a single participant will lead a boat to lose in the race. The thrilling event draws over two lakh viewers every year and the Rotary sponsored Vallam was standing out with all its rowers wearing the End Polio campaign T-shirt. With the spirit of rotary and cheer from the crowd, our Vallam secured second place in the event.
