This Commission report updates earlier one.8", issued annually since 1960,
listii~g hospital and medical school affiliations of Negro physicians and medical
~~udents in Chicago.
Since the la~t report, issued on October 23, 1964, 18 new hospital staff
al=-po:;.ntruP.nts of Negro physicians in non-governmental hospitals haye occurred.
During the past year Roseland Community and Franklin Boulevard hospitals appointed

ments in 45 non-governmental hospitals excluding Provident, Louiso Burg and Ida Mae
Scott hospitals, where another 110 Negro physicians are on the staff. {Michigan
Avenue Hospital, which had 70 Negro physicians on its medical staff of nearly 200,
closed durL'lg the year.) Some of these doctors hold employed positions as radiol-
ogists, pathologists, etc.; the overwhelming majority of the appointments allow
Negro doctors to admit their patient s to the hospital .
The number of Negro doctors hoJ.ding such appointments has more than tripled
since 1960 when Mayor Daley appointed a special comnittee to expand staff positions
for Negro physicians in Chicago. At the time of the formation of the comnittee in
September, 1960, 21 Negro doctors held 29 appointments in 12 non-governmental
hospitals, excluding Provident, Louise Burg, and Ida Mae Scott. At that time 215
Negroes were practicing medicine in Chica.go, representing a declining trend, since
226 were in practice L"l 1956. Th.i.s trend has now been reversed and today there
are 242 practicing Negr o physicians in Chicago.
Forty Negroes are in internship or residency programs in Chicago, compared to
16 in 1961-62. In addition, 19 Negroes are enrolled in the five Chicago medical
schools, compared to 14 in 1964.

(1) Appointments which permit the physician to admit his private patients tor treatment in the hospitals.
(2) Appointments of type which do not carry the above mentioned admitting privileges.
(;3) Resident appointments: training positions is specialties for· ~ who are not in private practice.
