Welcome From the Desk of NGJT Director Joe Canny, PGA

Cover Photo: NJGT Team Golf at Crooked Creek GC on July 9th.

We are half way through July and all the talk on tour has seemed to switch to The Prairie Club Championship & Wilderness Ridge Championship. I am thrilled with the excitement and look forward to hosting many of you at these two events. Invitation figures have be calculated and posted on http://www.njgt.org/njgt-point-standings/. Invitation totals for each divi-sion is based on the percentage that division makes up of the total tour. For example…Boys 16+ makes up 28.4% of our total NJGT 18-Hole Registration. They in turn get 21 invites (28% of 75 player field). The same math holds true for all divisions at both champion-ships. The player memo for The Prairie Club Championship has also been posted on the NJGT Schedule. It contains information on practice rounds, lodging, along with the championship. Point standings through July 22nd will determine the invitation list for The Prairie Club Championship while point stand-ings through July 24th will determine the field for Wilderness Ridge. I hope this information helps. Thank you once again for your participation in the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour and best of luck in the home stretch! Sincerely,

Joe Canny, PGA Junior Golf Director – NJGT (402) 730-8364 [email protected]

Featured FacilityPutting Drills to Improve Your Score

The quickest way to improve your score is to improve your putting. And here at GolfTEC of Omaha we have the facilities and profes-sionals who can help you get better while also giving you a place to practice rain or shine…and even snow! Here are a few drills we like and would recommend to you: 1. To ensure the face of your putter stays square pick a target and make a straight-line lead to the target by placing a coin between the ball and your target. On that same line, place a tee in the ground 12 to 15 inches behind the ball. Take the putter back square until you strike the tee, then follow through so the head of the put-ter travels directly over the coin with a square face. 2. Speed is just as important as line so use the ladder drill to work on your pace. Place a club 18-inches on the other side of the hole and then create a ladder by placing balls from 3 feet all the way back to 30 feet plus in three foot increments. Go up and down the ladder ensuring you finish all puts between the hole and your club behind the hole.

A. Turn this into a game by requiring that you make every ball in the target before you leave or compete against friends on who can go the furthest.

We love supporting the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour each season and look forward to seeing you at a GolfTEC Premier Event this summer. To learn more about GolfTEC of Omaha please click HERE.

Fitness Facts Presented by The PGA Sports Academy powered by UnitedHealthcare

Young athletes like yourselves need proper nutrition to ensure you are healthy and able to play your best. Proper fuel gives you a leg up on the competition.

To find a PGA Sports Academy program near you, visit PlayGolfAmerica.com.

A good balance of nutrients include:

Carbohydrates are your main energy source for muscles. About 50-60% of your calories should come from this group.

Some complex carbs that pro-vide hours of energy can come from rice, potatoes, bread and pasta.

For Immediate fuel turn to sim-ple carbs from fruit

Protein is necessary for maintaining muscles. About 15-20% of your calo-ries should come from proteins.

Protein is of course found in meats but to get your fix on the golf course I’d recommend nuts and jerky.

Fats sound awful but do provide you with long lasting fuel. The trick is moderation and favoring polyunsatu-rated and monounsaturated fats.

Water is key! Drink 16 ounces of water before golfing and about 5-10 ounces every couple of hours on the golf course.

Fuel Up on Balanced Nutrition

What is FORE!? As an extension of other initiatives that first introduce the game, the Nebraska Golf Association created FORE!, an access program that provides junior golfers the opportunity to play golf more frequently at participating NGA member clubs during the months of May, June, July and August. FORE! members can play par-ticipating courses across the state for just $4 per round.

Who’s eligible for FORE! membership? FORE! is not simply a discount card. Although the NGA wants to be as inclusive as possible it also wants members that have been introduced to the game through some sort of instruction and have a basic understanding of both the Rules of Golf and proper Etiquette. That said we require that FORE! applicants meet the following age and eligibility cri-teria:

Age: No minimum age, a golfer is no longer eligible for membership once they hit the date of September 1 following graduation from sec-ondary school (high school). Eligibility: Golfer must meet one of four eligibility requirements that meet the criteria of proper introduction:

• 2014 participant in one of the following certified programs: First Tee; Golf ‘N’ Schools; Great Golf Expectations; LPGA/USGA Girls Golf; NGA Youth on Course; Nebraska Junior Golf Tour; Panhandle Junior Golf Tour and PGA/USGA Sports Academy.

• 2014 participant in a junior golf program at an NGA member club.

• 2013-2014 high school golf team participant

• Other golfers approved by senior official at NGA member club (i.e. PGA Professional or Club Manager).

How do eligible golfers join the FORE! program? Applications are available on the FORE! web site (nebgolf.org/FORE), in both paper and online forms. The fee for membership is $10, and in

addition to their membership cards, FORE! members receive a NGA membership.

Where can FORE! rounds be played? FORE! is a statewide initiative in 2014, and is available in most regions of the state with over 40 participating golf cours-es. For a full list of participating courses, including contact information, please visit the FORE! website at nebgolf.org/FORE.

How is the FORE! program funded? The FORE! program is funded by the Nebraska Golf Foundation, whose mission is to promote the growth of golf in Ne-braska with an emphasis on making the game and its life-enhancing values accessible to youth. A sizable donation was made to the NGF from the 2013 U.S. Senior Open Championship in support of FORE! In addition, the NGF earmarks a portion of its own fundraising efforts to support the program.
