CSUF (Fullerton)(3 semesters of Class Piano: Music 182,282AB)

1) All scales and arpeggios, 2 octaves. Scales HT, Arpeggios, HS2) Harmonize a simple melody, using any diatonic triad as well as a secondary dominant as needed.3) Transpose harmonized melody up/down a M2, but limited to max four sharps or flats.4) Realize a chord symbol chart, including all seventh chords.

*Material #2-4 are given as sight reading, so it stays very simple (usually 4-8 measures only).5) Sight read a simple piece (e.g. A folk tune with notated simple harmonization).6) Accompany a soloist Students are given several weeks' preparation.7) No repertoire pieces are required in the exam, but the Final Exam piece in last class is equivalent toBurgmuller Arabesque.

CSULB (Long Beach)(4 semesters of Class Piano: Music 12QAB, 220AB)

1) Repertoire — Play three pieces (memorized) representing different stylistic periods.2) Technical Skills:a) All M/hm scales, 2 oct HT (min tempo: quarter=90, played in eighth notes)b) Chromatic scale on C, 2 oct HT (same tempo as above scales)c) All M/m arpeggios, 4 oct HT (min tempo for all arpeggios: quarter=72, played in eighth notes)d) All white key V7 chords arpeggios, 4 octaves, HTe) Diminished 7th chord arpeggios on C, D and E, 4 octaves, HT

3) Keyboard Harmonya) Chord progression I-IV-I-V-I (3 voiced chords in both hands) in all M/m keys with pedalingb) Harmonize a melody using different chord inversions and secondary harmony using an

accompanimental pattern (not block chords)c) Improvise a melody and provide chorda! accompaniment to a bass line provided by instructor.

4) Transpose a short piece selected by instructor.5) Choral open-score reading: Play any two parts of a 4-voiced composition.Students are given one-week preparation for #3-5. Repertoire pieces will be assigned one month prior byinstructor. Student may get help from instructor in any of the above during preparation.

CSULA(6 quarters of Class Piano: Music 143ABC, 243ABC)

CSULA has a Keyboard Proficiency Exam packet that a student can take home and prepare.It includes all the requirements for testing.1) All M/m scales, 2 oct HT, with triads and inversions (ascending only 1 oct HT)2) All qualities 7th chords in all keys, HT3) ii-V7-I progression in two different voidngs in all keys4) Accompany a soloist on 2 songs (Mozart Sehnsucht nach dem Fruhlinge, Ich Grolle Nicht)5) Score readings: 2-part clef reading (treble/alto); Open choral score (SATB); String quartet6) Harmonize melody with given chord symbols using LH block chord accompaniment (2 examples)7) Harmonize melody with given chord symbols using two-hand accompaniment8) Transpose a children's melody9) Sight read 2 passages, a piece from a state-adopted music text K-8, and an atonal passage10) Two contrasting repertoire (one from each set):

CSUN (NORTHRIDGE)(4 semesters of Keyboard Musicianship: Music 110AB, 210AB)

Placement exam consists solely of sight reading. There are four levels of sight reading testing.Level 1: 5-finger selection with standard LH cadence accompanimentLevel 2: extended hand positions up to an octave.Level 3: cross rhythms.Level 4: large range of rhythm readings.Highest placement of transfer students, regardless of sight reading ability, is into fourth semester.All classes have heavy emphasis on sight reading. First 10 minutes of every class is devoted to SR.In each level, students are assigned two repertoire pieces, about one month before finals.
