Introduction• Near Field Communication (NFC) is a standards-based, short-

range wireless connectivity technology that enables simple and safe two-way interactions among electronic devices.

• Based on RFID

… a touch

NFC is as easy as….

Specifications• Based on RFID technology at 13.56 MHz .• Operating distance typical up to 20 cm.• Compatible with today’s field proven contactless RFID

technology. • Data exchange rate today up to 424 Kbps, expected to be

increased upto 1Mbps till 2013 .

Why NFC ???• Faster setup for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.• Can be used for payment as Credit Card and Debit Card• Compatible with RFID tags .• Backward compatibility with existing infrastructure.• More Secure due to low range and use of encryptions(like

SSL,TTL etc.).• Easy to use, just “Tap and play”.• Transmit and Receive data at the same time.• Very Low Power Consumption as short range.

How it Works

NFC works using magnetic induction as RFID do : a initiator emits a small electric current, which creates a magnetic field that in turn bridges the physical space between the devices. That field is received by a similar coil in the client device, where it is turned back into electrical impulses to communicate data such as identification number, status information, or any other information.

Modes Of Operation

• Passive Mode- Between an active device and a passive device like a RFID tag or Smart

Card etc.

• Active Mode- Between two active devices. Also known as peer-to-peer

communication.

Logical Link Control Protocol (LLCP)• Defines the protocol to manage the logical link between NFC

Forum devices (based on ISO 18092 / NFCIP-1)Data Exchange Format(NDEF)• Defines the storage format for different types of data to be

transferred Record Type Definition(RTD)• The type of data to be stored in tag based on NDEF by third

party and its transferCard Emulation

• Defines how NFC Forum devices can function as contactless smart cards

Security Aspect• Short range of work• Support for encryption• Prevention against collision of devices• Passive Mode is more secure than Active mode• Susceptible to RFID jamming

Who are using NFC• Windows 8 and Windows Phone• Google Android• Apple iOS 5• Blackberry 7.0 • Symbian OS• And others …

Applications• Fast Setup of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections. • Due to short transmission range and encryption NFC-

based transactions are possibly secure• Instant payments and coupon delivery using your handset• Transferring images, posters for displaying and printing• In Industries to identify and differentiate objects(DHL,

UPS, McDonalds etc)• Health Monitoring• Electronic Key for car ,office room, hotel room etc. • Electronic Money(eg: Google Wallet etc.)• Smart Posters
