The weather is changing, the snow is gone, and it is time to ride... or so I thought! On March 27 I planned to ride a motorcycle instructor course. Who knew it would be 25 degrees in the morning!! Weatherman said it was to warm up to the mid 40’s and the roads were dry the day before so I decided to put the heated gear to the test and headed out at 8:30AM for the 40 minute ride to the community college. It sure was invigorating and the looks I got from the cagers along the way were priceless. Just a reminder that the Spring Fling” regional rally is just a few weeks away. COGgers will descend on Somerset, PA May 20-23. There is still time to register at the pre-event rally fee of $29 for members and immediate family. From Somerset you can hit some great roads in West Virginia, or explore the historic Lincoln Highway. There are two Frank Lloyd Wright homes nearby to tour. What’s up in Metro NY/NJ by Terry Faherty #792

Hello again from Gotham! Looks like winter has finally decided to leave for good, now we just need the rains to stop. I was going to try to get an April ride together but things aren't looking good due to family commitments. Looking forward to the Spring Fling in Somerset, though. I'll be heading out on Thursday morning and possibly meeting up for the ride out. My road knowledge of southern Pennsyl-vania is spotty at best so I'll be depending on others for some nice roads and scen-ery. Right now plans are in the early stages so keep your eyes on the official fo-rum for details, specifically the Spring Fling entry. The more the merrier and all that rot! Jason never lets us down with his rallies so lets get hoppin' and get registered. I might be able to squeeze in a day ride in early May, so keep your eyes on the forum. I'm trying to beg/borrow/steal some days for an Americade trip too come June. At best I'll be heading up after work on Wednesday, June 9, and head-ing home the following Sunday. My days of annual Monday to Sunday trips are now in the past due to unretirement. But my bank account thanks me! Laters all and see you out there!

Pittsburgh (Western PA) Greetings by Joe Cyprych #4665 Hello fellow Coggers! As the song goes, get on those bikes and ride. Looking at the schedule it’s already busting at the seams with rides, rallies, etc., so come on out and meet some fellow Coggers this year (most of us don’t bite). We’re going to con-tinue our Sunday meet greet and rides again this year but with a twist. If you plan on attending contact me by phone or email and let me know, because if no one shows I will be off riding somewhere else, or possibly away on a weekend trip. We are also holding our Cook Forest weekender again, which is turn-ing into a very well attended event (details are on the web & newsletter). As always, any questions or ride ideas etc. feel free to contact me anytime. Hope to see you all soon.

Greetings New England Coggers! by Kevin Martin #145

Wow, what crazy New England weather we’re having this spring. We’ve had so much rain in March that we broke records on the amount of rain ever in a single month. There has also been a lot of flooding and many wet basements. Then the rain stopped on April fools day, and transitioned into record warm tempera-tures with more to follow in the coming week. The average temperature this time of the year is 50 degrees but over the past few days it has been up to 75 degrees. The last weather report I looked at predicted that we’ll be having temps around 85 mid week this week. Not sure if I’m ready for that. If it keeps up this way, we’ll be having a real long summer and lots of riding opportunities. Sounds good to me!

In the last Newsletter, I mentioned a few key events being planned for Northern New England. The February Tech Session had to be cancelled cause Tom Kerrigan made the move up to a C14, so our season officially started with our annual winter social on March 7th. We had an awesome turn out this year with over 20 people attending the Lowell Brewery social. I really look forward to getting together with everyone during the socials. It’s a great time to meet in the off-season and catch up on what every one has been doing and discuss club business. Here are a few pictures of the event. More pic-tures are posted in the MassCog.org photo gallery.

Our riding season starts in a couple of weeks with a little ride out to Jaffrey New Hampshire to visit the Cathedral of the Pines War Memorial then have lunch at Kimball’s Farm on their opening weekend. If the weather is good I expect to see lots of bikes and maybe some antique cars at Kimball’s, a local fa-vorite lunch stop, and don’t forget the awesome ice crème.

Also, some late breaking news. Mike Benham will be hosting a southern Maine coastal ride on April 24th. Check the online calendar for details on Mike’s ride. The meeting location will be Becky's Diner at 390 Commercial St. (U.S. 1A) in Portland, ME. Mike is also planning a ride in June to the Rangeley Lakes Region.

Coming up on May 1st, the Mulloy’s and the Habel’s join forces again for their annual COG Tech Ses-sion. This is quickly becoming another members favorite with lots of wrenching, socializing, and eat-ing going on. Even if you’re not interested in having your bike serviced, stop by to say hello to fellow members. Monson Mass and area towns have some nice roads if you’re looking for an excuse to go for a ride. Many thanks to Pat and Sherry Mulloy for opening their home to host this event, and to Greg and Tracy for coordinating the Tech Sessions. By the way these folks do everything themselves with no assistance from COG, which is their special way of giving back to the club, so if you attend give them a special Cogger thank you.

As I mentioned in the last Newsletter, we’ve thrown in several weekend overnight rides this year, start-ing with the Berkshire camping weekend out in Lee Massachusetts. This will be hosted by the Habel’s and the Mulloy’s and is expected to be a great time. We’ll be meeting at the October Mountain State Forest Campground on Friday May 14th, full details are published in the COGMOS online calendar. I’ve made my reservations and will be pitching my tent on site #43.

Eastern Ontario Report By Ken Fader, #8534

Well spring has sprung here in eastern Ontario, and it is time to dust Connie off, give her a little physical and take her out for some serious play time.

Hopefully most of the boys in blue have decided to take the long weekend off (spring fever and all). It has been good to hear from local members over the winter and I look forward to meet-ing up with them, and see if we can get a few things happening in this area. One thing that was noted by a few members is that my e-mail address was wrong so here it is corrected [email protected]. I have to thank one of the members that I heard from over the winter, Claude a member from Ottawa sent me a e-mail and asked if I would be interested in a project bike, Seems last season Claude and Connie did a little dear hunting, and although successful, was a little hard on the two of them, Claude is a very lucky man and escaped with a few injuries. So last weekend I headed up to Ottawa and picked Connie up, she now has a home in my shop and looks like she will be resurrected, It was nice to meet Claude and his wife if even for that short period of time as they were both a little busy that day, this is one of the good parts of being a member of COG is you get to meet the nicest people.

Not to much else to report on for this time, but hopefully in the next little while we can get something pulled together for this area and be able to show other members just how great this area is to ride in and see the sites. take care and cheers for now.

Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Coggers by Dave Clancy #5452

Our local area regular meet and greet continues on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Mohawk Inn, Campbellville Jctn 401 and Guelph line. Everyone is welcome, friends, members or not. See the N.E. schedule at cog-online.org. At the March meet-ing we had new faces and some folks even arrived by motorcycle. It took a lot of layered fleece and plugging in of electrics to get home since the temperature dropped like a stone when the sun set.

Now is the time to start attending this gathering because in addition to the excellent camaraderie, folks are planning their rides. The ‘spring fling’ in Somerset Pa. is a day’s ride for us. We have some ideas for local rides – come and share your opinion. This is a chance to arrange a travel buddy. There have been some suggestions to start a half and half draw. You may bring your surplus motorcycle related ‘stuff’ to trade or sell.

Happenings from Virginia & West Virginia by Kurt & Sue Nordstrom #6049+6049A

Well it finally looks like spring has sprung here in VA & WV. Daytime tempera-tures have been in the 70’s and night times temperatures have been anywhere from the high 30’s to low 40’s. The rain has finally stopped and with the warm temperatures; lawn mowers are running…this must mean it is time to ride!

Many thanks to all that volunteered to host a ride in February and March; while these months can be real nasty when it comes to weather this year we were blessed with a break in the forecast just for the COG events. Call us nuts and / or other things that I cannot put in print; this bunch enjoys a good route sheet / roads and good food.

Pat Sprague hosted a February Breakfast Ride out of Gordonsville, VA. The roads were dry (snow free) and the temperatures were brisk to say the least but the COG faithful and a group from the Adventure Riders Forum showed up for some warm food and COG Camaraderie. March brought us the Crab Cakes Ride and Camping Weekend in North East, MD hosted by Russell Fleming. This event starts at Holly’s Restaurant near the Chesapeake Bay and ends in North East, MD. The camping facilities were at Elk Neck State Park and delicious crab cakes were devoured at Woody’s Crab House.

As we look forward in the mid Atlantic we have the Tax Relief Ride hosted by Jim Sparkman on April 17th. We will meet at Horne’s Restaurant for breakfast and Jim will hand out route sheets for some of the best roads on the Northern Neck Virginia and he always finds some of the best places to eat lunch. This is a “must do” for anyone’s bucket list.

The month of May brings us the Northeast Spring Rally based out of Somerset, PA. Rally Master Jason Kaplitz has been working very hard on this project and has fun filled days planned for us. The rally fee is dirt cheap for what he is giving us; there is no reason other than being dead for not attending…well maybe unemployed. There is a thread on the COG Forum promoting this rally, it can be found at: http://www.cog-online.org/clubportal/mboards/viewmessages.cfm?clubID=1328&forum=1412&Topic=20301. There is a ton of information about the Rally along with fellow Coggers looking to be frugal and save some bucks and share a room. So if your dollars are tight in this tuff economy and you would really like to attend the Rally but don’t want to part with the $$ for a room, this is the way to save some serious coin, meet a fellow Cogger and start a new friendship. So stop sitting on the fence, that board has to be bothering your hemorrhoids by now.

Well my newsletter articles can get pretty wordy, not this one. It’s 80 degrees outside, Sue broken leg is healed and she has been given the green light to start riding again, see ya on the road somewhere in the Northeast.

Till next time……Ride Safe!

Newburgh, NY Meet & Greet by Bob Barbanti COG #7134

April 10 was the first of my monthly meet and greets that I had for the north east area in lower New York. I had it at the Gateway Dinner in Newburgh, NY. I though it might be a low turn out because it was only about forty degrees and cloudy this morning. But I said that I would have it rain or shine. I hoped that if it rained, maybe some people would show up in their cars. Well I pulled out the Concours and rode over to the Gateway. It was actually pretty nice riding. Cool and crisp air made for a refreshing ride.

I arrived around 10:30AM in case people traveling, arrived early. Not to my surprise, someone was already there. I knew now that I wouldn’t be eating alone! It was none other than our AAD Terry Faherty from Staten Island, NY. Well Terry and I had a nice chat waiting for others to arrive. Around 11AM Mike Aldea (from NJ) pulled up in his Legacy GT wagon. Mike only has a mesh riding jacket at this time. So with it being so cool, Mike decided to take the car rather than freeze on the bike.

The next to arrive was Andy Howgego all the way from Australia. Only kidding, Andy now resides in Connecticut. Another cage pulled up a few minutes later with local New Yorkers, Steve and Sue Cerutti (The COG Merchandise Czar-et). Steve had been ill lately. So they came in the Isuzu. Sue being the Czar-et that she now is, was kind enough to deliver me a new COG polo shirt and save me the postage fees. I ruined my last grey polo shirt with Burger grease at the COG NE Area winter track day.

It was already past 11:30AM, so we decided to go inside and get started. Well it wasn’t long before others arrived. Jim Mayhew rode in from New Jersey. He arrived late, but I new this days ago, because he had another meeting in Jersey earlier this morning.

Abbe and Ben Otunu also local New Yorkers didn’t let us down! We finally ordered and began to eat. Well pulling up the rear with the distinction of last to arrive were the final three. Brian Felice rode in from Rhode Island and met up with Carl Dye and Gerry Barnett in Connecticut. To be fair they would have been on time. But they had

too many adventures on the trip in to make it on time. Brian was nice enough to hold up Gerry’s bike for him when Gerry needed a quick stop on I84! (but, that’s really their story) Then they decided to bypass Newburgh and hop on the NYS Thruway and decided to ride up to New Paltz and back before lunch. (again, their story)

So now we have a total of 12 people had shown up. This is better than I expected because of the weather, so I’m happy. Better yet, 11 of the 12 people that showed up were actual COG members. This was excellent as well. I know the 12th person would like to be a member. He just can’t find time to join because he’s always too busy trying to keep his KIPASS working!!!!! (ed: COG welcome a new member as the 12th joined a few days after the meet n greet and after Bob submitted this story)

Well the lunch was good and we were in the parking lot to discuss a ride after lunch. Gerry wanted to avoid the highway going home, and I can’t blame him. So Gerry and Carl went towards Poughkeepsie, NY to ride back roads home. That was too far out of the way for Brian, who had to get home sooner. He could ride for about an hour. But then he had to get on the highway after that. So I took Brian, Andy and Jim (who had to ride back to south Jersey) for a ride out RT 301, in Putnam County, by the West Branch Reservoir.

We ended our short ride near Carmel, NY. Brian and Andy went east on I-84 towards home. Jim and I went west. I last watched Jim getting on the NYS Thruway to head back to Jersey. I have to say that it was a nice first meet and greet. And I want to thank all that participated. The next one is again at the Gateway dinner in Newburgh, on Saturday May 8th. The game plan is for the second Saturday of the month for the meet and greets (except June-I already have another COG ride that day). Hope to see y’all there! The COG Spring Fling in Somerset PA will be coming up at the end of May, and I’m planning on attending this year and will be available to ride down with anyone who wants to join me. I’ve posted meet-ing information and the routes I’m taking on my home page. I may adjust the route and/or overnight location slightly so check back for updates before the trip.

I missed the 2009 Northeast Rallies last year so I’m really looking forward to attending the Spring Fling in Somerset this year. This will actually be my first opportunity to take my ’09 C14 on a long ride and a rally, so I’m really looking forward to it and hoping for good weather in PA, (for a change).

This is just a sample of what’s being planned for Northern New Eng-land COG. As you can see we’ve got a full schedule of rides and events hosted by myself and other area members. Thanks very much folks for stepping up again this year to make our Area so suc-cessful. Stay tuned for more event listings and updates in the next Newsletter. Also, if you’re planning on attending one of the local events this year, contact the event planner or check the event list-ings if you think there might be a delay or reschedule due to weather. The COGMOS online calendar and my Masscog.org home page is my way of reaching out to the membership to provide the latest up to date event information. Enjoy this next riding season! Hope to see you all at one of the COG events this year. Above all, ride safe and have fun!

Maryland C-14 Ride by Russell Fleming #

The weather on this April 11th was in the 70’s and sunny making it a nice day for a ride. There were 31 motorcycles and 36 people in at-tendance. It was nice to see 5 couples together. Most of the time you don’t see this.

The reason I stepped up and decided to host a ride like this is that COG needs to reach out to younger people who are buying the C-14. Twenty years ago when I joined COG it seemed like I was a younger person in the club and I soon found out that some of the older mem-bers were a lot of fun. Now that I am becoming one of the older mem-bers I am reaching out to the younger people to become members and see how much fun it is being a member.

The ride started out at Golden Coral in Frederick, Maryland. Some of the people came down early Saturday night as far away as 200 miles to spend the night in Frederick so that they could ride the ride through Virginia and West Virginia. The ride ended at Mountain Gate in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania where everyone enjoyed a buffet dinner before going home.

Another reason that I had a good turn out was that I was able to sup-ply them with a route sheet or GPS file so that they could ride at their own pace and with whoever they wanted to ride with. Here is a mo-torcycle count of what bikes were on the ride. 8 C14, 3 C10, 6 FJR, 2 V Stroms, 2 HD, 1 ST1300, 4 BMW and 5 others.

My next COG event is the North/South13 on June25-27. I would like to thank everybody who voted for me to be the over the ponder 2010 traveler and to everybody who gave a contribution.
