PROGRAMME
WELCOME!
Whether it’s resisting cuts and oppression or standing up for the
climate and workers’ rights, the brilliant people in the NEON
community have been all sorts of busy. Today you are invited to
turn the volume down on the daily grind and bring it back to the
wider game plan. Why are we doing this? How do our stories fit
together? And what can people taking action for a fair and
sustainable economy do differently now to start winning?
We hope you enjoy fun, festivities and feasts, all organised by fellow
NEON members, and the chance to spend some quality time with
some amazing people, swapping skills, creating connections and
making plans … on your marks, get set, go!
Much love,
NEON Summer Gathering organising team: Alex Jones, Ayeisha Thomas-Smith, Bibi Gratzer, Colette St-Onge, Dan Vockins, Ioana Sirca, Jannat Hossain, Jessie Barnard, Rosie Baines, Meg Brodie and Noel Hatch
P.S. This is your day as much as anyone else’s so don’t hang about if
there’s something you want to do or talk about that’s not in here:
self-organise!
ABOUT NEON
The New Economy Organisers Network (NEON) is a community of
activists, campaigners and organisers committed to taking on the
economic root causes of social and environmental injustice. We run
trainings, share skills and ideas, and collaborate on strategy and
campaigns. In the three years we’ve been around we’ve grown to
over a thousand members from across the social movements.
NEON depends on the active leadership of our members to make it
work and is supported by a small staff team. If you have ideas for
how NEON’s members could better learn from or work with each
other, then get in touch and we’ll work with you to make
10.00 Breakfast briefing – where are we at? Deborah Grayson, Lola Okolosie & Dawn Foster
They say it’s the most important meal of the day… so join Deborah, Lola and Dawn
for a slap up breakfast and their morning report on the state of progressive politics
now. Where are we at now and where are we going next?
Brekkie: fruit & honey porridge (free with ticket)
11:00 Our Common Agenda Dan Vockins and Christine Berry (New Economics Foundation)
Last year we worked together to map what unites our visions of a better future.
Now on NEON’s third birthday it’s time to talk strategy: what concrete steps
can we take together now to pave the way to a fair and sustainable economic
system. Be in the room!
11:30 Breakout #1: Key battles
Christine Berry (NEF) and Guppi Bola (NEON)
What are our strategic and tactical
chances over the next twelve months
to hit neoliberalism where it hurts?
Breakout #2: Power: Ours & theirs
Tatiana Garavito (London Latinx)
Where does neoliberal power come from and how should we be building ours? Let’s talk names and institutions.
Breakout #3: Our story
Bec Sanderson & Dora Meade (PIRC) and Ellie Mae O’Hagan (NEON)
Why are we losing the battle to frame the
economy and what can we do about it? Get
stuck into NEONs new 18-month project.
All day
NEON Matchmakers
NEON’s matchmakers are here to help
you meet organisers to work with from
across our movements. Tell them what’s
big in your activism world and they’ll find
you some great people to talk to about it.
(If it’s love you’re looking for, we're sure
that can also be arranged…)
PROGRAMME
13:00 Picnic! Lunch: homemade breads, salads and dips. Feel free to bring extra treats to share!
Beyoncé dance class with Ayeisha Thomas-Smith
Well-being check-in with Luke Wreford (Mindfulness & Social Change Network) A moment of calm to reflect on how you’re doing, & share tips on supporting ourselves & others when the going gets tough.
14:30 Go viral with Novara Ash Sarkar & Ralph Pritchard (Novara Media)
Want to learn the secrets of creating super-shareable video content? Ash and Ralph will take you behind the scenes of their most successful videos so far and offer practical advice about producing and promoting your own.
Intersectionality in our activism and beyond Guppi Bola & Jannat Hossain (NEON)
What is intersectionality, what can it help us achieve, and how can we embed it into our activism (and lives)? Join this discussion to think practically about how connecting our struggles can help us in the fight for systemic change.
How do our communities really win? Andrea Enisuoh (Hackney Community Organiser) & Stewart Halforty (Nottingham People’s Assembly)
Communities across the country are taking on neoliberal power on their doorsteps. Let’s talk about what local action on global problems looks like today and what’s needed to grow the momentum.
Something inside how strong? Luke Wreford (Mindfulness & Social Change Network)
How does personal change relate to social change for social justice and sustainability? Join Luke for a discussion about how our inner world affects our efforts to create change in the outside world – and what that means for the wider progressive agenda.
Panama postmortem Huw Jordan (NEON)
Did UK progressives do enough with what was handed to us in the Panama Papers? Explore the response to the leak, the actors and institutions involved, and what we might do differently next time our Prime Minister is implicated in the tax evasion scandal of a lifetime.
PROGRAMME
16.00 Afternoon pit stop Grab a hot or cold drink on us…
16:30 When party politics met people power Paul Hilder (Bernie Sanders campaign), Emma Rees (Momentum) & Elsa González (Podemos)
The relationship
between progressive
populist movements
and political parties is
evolving in exciting and
powerful ways. Pick
apart the lessons from
the UK and abroad from
key experiments in
organising around
formal political power.
Creative community engagement Anca Giurgiu and Ciprian Diaconita (Environmental & Social Change Romania)
How can theatre, games
and collective art
organise communities
on the frontline of social
and environmental
injustice? Find out in
this hands-on
workshop.
Climate strategy refresh Asad Rehman (Friends of the Earth), Sheila Menon (Reclaim the Power / Heathrow 13) & Sam Mason (Public & Commercial Services Union)
Half a year on from the
Paris climate talks, our
fight for climate justice
is growing in strength,
both locally and
globally. Discuss what
the priorities for the
climate movement
should be next, from the
political pressure points
to the tactics.
Decolonising British public life Dalia Gebrial (Rhodes Must Fall) & Hassan Mahamdallie (Muslim Institute)
Recent years have seen an
outburst of campaigns
exposing the colonial
oppression built into the
foundations of many of
Britain’s cultural and
economic institutions.
What have these
campaigns looked like so
far? What are their
strengths and
weaknesses? And what’s
next for them?
Storytelling for systems change Robert Holtam (Narrative Coach)
Behind every great
campaign is a great
story. Learn the building
blocks of an immersive
and compelling story -
character, conflict, plot,
empathy and detail – to
ensure the stories of
change you tell are ones
your audience can
visualise, care about,
relate to and feel they
can be part of.
