Energy Efficient Tips

As Palisadians,

we rely on elec-

tricity to sustain

our homes and

lifestyles. Un-

fortunately our

demand for power

continues to in-

crease as com-

munities grow, tech-

nologies advance,

power infrastructures

age and resources di-

minish.

Since the energy cri-

sis, Californian’s have

become more conscien-

tious about energy us-

age, the importance of

conservation and need

to use more energy effi-

cient products. But the

movement has been

slow. It took nearly a

decade for Americans

to accept those funny

looking light bulbs

called compact fluorescent lamps.

Nonetheless, new products kept be-

ing developed, including LED or

light emitting diodes. These energy

efficient lights that last up to 10

times longer than incandescent are

now included in holiday lights, traffic

signals and street lights (to name a

few).

Changing a few light bulbs is a

start, but it’s not enough. We must

help build a crusade to become more

energy efficient as individuals and

businesses collectively. In our com-

munity, we have more of an incen-

tive with the impending addition of a

power substation. The fact remains

that our antiquated substation may

not be able to deliver enough elec-

tricity during hot summer days to our

homes and businesses. It will be

most critical to reduce usage during

peak energy demand hours of noon

to 6pm. If not, and the lone substa-

tion in Pacific Palisades becomes

overloaded during this time period,

we may face forced rotating outages.

However, if our community

works together toward a common

goal—to reduce usage, and become

energy efficient—the demand for

electricity will drop, bills will be

lower and the lights will continue to

glow.

The federal government, states

change our habits by offering millions

of dollars in energy rebates to home-

owners, apartment owners, and busi-

nesses.

takes a village to raise a child”, we as

From a Marquez Knolls Resident: I realize not everyone is on Medicare but you might pass this on to friends who are. I especially think our older residents are more likely to fall for a scam like this.

Someone pretending to be Medicare called to inform me that a new card is being issued and must be used in conjunction with the old card. They verify phone number and address. THEN...."we need to be sure we are speaking to the correct person so can you please verify your bank” I didn't hear any more because I hung up.

The City of Los Angeles recently

updated its list of street repairs for

Pacific Palisades. Unfortunately Akron

was not among those listed. After

receiving an inquiry from a resident,

PPCC rep and MKPOA board member

contacted the City to find out the

status. Rea learned the Akron street

resurfacing is delayed until completion

of DWP sewer upgrades 2013-2014.

MKPOA is often alerted to crimes by

neighbors which are shared via our

e-com distribution list. Unfortunately,

many residents say they did not report

the incident to LAPD. It is imperative

to contact police so they can tract

criminals. Call 9-1-1 immediately

following a crime—house burglary, car

break-in/theft or vandalism. You can

still report a crime after the fact, by

calling the West LAPD front desk at

310 444-0702.

Marquez Knolls resident, Evan Epstein (age 12) won first place in the 2012 Glendale Piano Competition. He competed with talented young pianists from the greater Los Angeles area in May. Evan played the Chopin Polonaise in A flat major, op. 53. Among many other local and national awards, Evan won the American Fine Arts Competition last year and was invited to play at Carnegie Hall. ACS Security—which patrols

Marquez Knol ls— i s warning

homeowners that hefty fines are

being levied if LAPD responds to a

false alarm at your residence.

Without patrol service from the

alarm company, LAPD is the first

responder and a homeowner is

subject to false alarm charges by the

City when the alarm is accidentally

triggered.

However, residents who have both

patrol and alarm service with ACS

security can avoid these charges.

When an alarm is tripped, ACS

dispatch is notified and a patrol car is

sent to the home. If it is a false

alarm, the device is reset, LAPD is

not called to respond, and no false

alarm charges are incurred.

The City ordinance no longer

waives the fee for a first false alarm

offense.

In addition to false alarm charges,

homeowners must have a City alarm

permit which is $34 initially and $30

annually. Charges for false alarm calls

by LAPD are as follows for permitted

and non-permitted alarms:

64th Annual Pacific

Palisades Fourth of July

Parade

The highlight of every July

Fourth is the Pacific Palisades parade,

which has grown to be one of the top

Independence Day parades in the entire

U.S.A. Come join your neighbors and

enjoy the best bands and equestrian units

in the country, marching alongside our

very own community groups, local

celebrities, neighbors and kids. Our 2012

Parade Grand Marshal is Jerry Mathers!

MKPOA is a proud sponsor of PAPA and

our local 4th of July parade for four years.

Be sure to wave as the patriotically-

decorated MKPOA car drives by!

The LAFD began brush

clearance inspections on

May 1. If you receive a

notice of non-compliance

you will have 15-days to

remove brush. If you

receive a 2nd notice, you will be fined

$320. If your property is still not in

compliance, the LAFPD will charge

the cost of brush clearance, the $320

fee and a $997 administrative fee. In

addition residents must pay a $23

fee because we live in a Very High

Fire Hazard Severity Zone unless you

do a self-inspection.

1. I always check the freezer – and not for food!

2. Here's a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.

3. I won't have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me.

4. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. You can buy a device that works on a timer and simulates the glow of a real television.

5. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.

Palisades: Learn to become

energy wise with tips and

rebate information

Bring the entire family for

food, fun and facts

There are many ver-

sions of homemade

beer traps. The simplest

is a shallow pan or plas-

tic food container filled with an inch or

two of cheap, stale beer. Bury the

container so the lip is at about ground

level so that slugs and snails can eas-

ily crawl into the trap. Suspend a

cover that protects the beer but al-

lows slugs and snails to enter. They

will be attracted to the odor and fall

into the beer and die. Empty the trap

every day or two but don't put dead

slugs into the compost bin as they will

rot and smell bad.

MKPOA is proud to sponsor the Movies in the Park series for the third year. Join us and the entire
