ABOUT NDSU BISONCLUB BASEBALL

4

The North Dakota State University club baseball team began its inaugu-ral season in the spring of 2013 and is in its second year as a student organiza-tion. The team played 12 games in its first season, with a schedule that consisted of seven games at the National Club Baseball Association spring training show-case and games on the road in Moorhead, Minn., at Concorida College against MSU-Moorhead and at Veterans Field in Minnetonka, Minn., against Winona State University. Prior to the 2013 spring season, NDSU students were allowed to play on the Minnesota State-Moorhead club baseball team. The team was not a member of the NCBA, but still played games in the NCBA spring training showcase. The Dragons also hosted games among schools like Mayville State, Jamestown Uni-versity and Fergus Falls Community College, while also traveling to schools like St. John’s. MSUM was head coached by Mike Skogen from 2005 to 2012. Twenty-one players were on the original 2012-13 Bison club baseball roster, with former NDSU baseball player Max Casper leading the team in its first year as head coach. The team finished with a 2-10 record, picking up victories over MSU-Moorhead and Ferris State in its inaugural season. With the start of the 2013-14 school year, NDSU entered its first year with a full-season schedule that takes place in the fall and spring. The Bison came into the fall schedule with 26 student-athletes who participated in eight games during the fall, with the team recording a 2-6 record. This spring, NDSU has 28 players eligible to compete for the Bison during the 2014 spring schedule that begins in March at the NCBA spring training showcase. Kole Zimmerman begins his first year as head coach of the NDSU club baseball team this season. Zimmerman was a standout athlete at NDSU, playing both football and baseball for the Bison. He has coached baseball at multiple lev-els, most notably as an assistant for the NDSU Bison Division I varsity team and the last two years as an assistant for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks profession-al baseball club. Zimmerman also played four years of professional baseball for the RedHawks from 2008 to 2011. The Bison are in the midst of their second season as a member at the Division II level of the NCBA and are part of the District V-West conference. The five-school conference includes members Minnesota State-Moorhead, Winona State, Minnesota and Lakehead State (Ontario). The five teams play a confer-ence schedule consisting of round-robin play. Each school will play every confer-ence member in at least three conference games during the season. The team with the best conference record will go on to play in the Division Championship against the District V-South and District V-East champions, with an at-large team selected from one of the three conferences.

ABOUT THE NCBA

5

The National Club Baseball Association (NCBA) is the first ever, national governing body for collegiate club base-ball. Founded in 2000 by former Penn State Baseball Club player and president, Sandy Sanderson, the initial season had 34 club baseball teams from across the country competing in the league. In the years since its commencement, the league has grown tremendously with over 245 mem-ber baseball teams during the 2014 season. The NCBA annually provides more than 4,700 college students with the chance to continue their competitive baseball careers and contend for a true national championship. There are a number of former NCBA baseball players who began their careers on the club team at their school before moving on to play for their NCAA Division I programs, while several others have gone on to play professional baseball in the independent leagues. Major League Baseball made full acknowledgement of the league’s talent when the Florida Marlins drafted Colorado State pitcher Nathan Nowicki in the 19th round of the 2003 Amateur Player Draft. Nate holds the designation of being the first player drafted out of the NCBA but certainly not the last. Following Nate’s 2003 selection, the Anaheim Angels selected RHP Chris Waters in the 16th round of the 2004 Amateur Player Draft. Chris had spent 3 seasons on the Clemson Club team before transferring to the University of North Florida (DII) to finish his senior campaign. Then in 2005, Steve Schmoll formerly of the University of Maryland Club team had the distinguished honor of making his Major League debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Since then several other players have been drafted or have been picked up via Free Agency by Professional Ball Clubs. Upon seeing the success of the baseball league over the years, many collegiate club softball teams began to take notice and wondered why there was no league for them. Thus in 2006, the NCBA started the National Club Softball Asso-ciation (NCSA). With an initial membership total of 36 teams for the inaugural season and substantial growth since then, the NCSA appears to be off and running at a similar pace as the NCBA with over 100 member teams in 2014. In 2007, the NCBA began to realize that an obvious disparity in talent level was developing with in the league. Smaller schools and first year programs were struggling to be competitive with some of the club baseball programs from larger schools or those that had been in operation for many years. In an effort to both even the playing field and maximize the club baseball experience for all teams in the league, the NCBA split in to two divisions (DI and DII). Division I teams compete for the chance to play in Regional Tournaments at the end of the season with the Regional winners move on to compete in the DI World Series. Division II teams compete for the chance to play in District Playoffs and thus the chance to play in the DII World Series at the end of the season.*Courtesy: National Club Baseball Association

SPRING PREVIEW

7

Bison Club Baseball Brings Valuable Fall Experience Into the Spring of 2014 The North Dakota State club baseball team begins its spring portion of its 2013-14 schedule at the National Club Baseball Association 2014 Spring Training Showcase Sunday, March 15, against Bloomsburg University (PA) at 5 p.m. (ET) at Mike Sansone Park in Plant City, Fla. The Bison go into the showcase at 2-6 and have played with a young roster that has gained experience through-out the fall and winter. With underclassmen again playing a major role for the second year, NDSU will continue to try to improve as the spring progresses. Only one senior and one graduate student make up 28 of the players on the spring roster for the Bison. Eleven student-athletes return from last year’s squad, with six of the same players that made the showase trip in 2013 returning to Florida for the Bison in 2014. NDSU is scheduled to play 14 games in 2014, with eight set to be played in the Fargo-Moorhead area. The club baseball team will continue its play in the District V-West conference hosting three-game series’ against MSU-Moorhead and Lakehead University (Ontario), before ending the season matched up with MSCTC-Fergus Falls and Jamestown University.

Catchers There will be a host of players jockying to get time behind the plate for the Bison. The most experienced players include sophomores Aaron Butler and Dylan Musgjerd. Freshmen Austin Halvorson and Curtis Sandeen picked up time catching in games during the fall schedule, while newcomer Matt Ruhland will also be in the mix for NDSU. “Behind the plate, we have some experienced players who will continue to be a big part of our team,” head coach Kole Zimmerman said. “Dylan Musgjerd, Aaron Butler, and Austin Halvorson all showed the ability to control the game during the fall season and will be asked to do so as well in the spring. Matt Ruhland has shown improvement over the practice schedule and could see some time there as well, along with Curtis (Sandeen).”

First Base The Bison won’t be lacking on power or size at first base. Juniors Ethan Bakken and Nat Croaker both come back for NDSU in the spring of 2014 with both looking to play roles in the middle of the order. Freshman Joe Olson plans to be another key at the corner infield position for NDSU, after gaining plenty of experience in the fall of 2013. ”Joe Olson, Ethan Bakken, and Nat Croaker are the three primary candidates for playing time at first base,” Zimmerman said. “It is vital to get offensive production out of the corner infield spots, so whoever steps out as the most productive player will have an inside track to staying in the lineup.”

Second Base Second base has been a revovling assortment of players for the Bison the last two seasons, and this spring will have that same feel. Juniors Dane Ekdom and Austin Selvey played the most for NDSU in 2013, with Ekdom looking to bring the most experience to the position this spring. Freshmen Dalton Folkema, Nick Ferguson, Ethan Becker and Luke Nietfeld earned time at the spot this fall. Freshman Jackson Nelson and David Dirks are new to the program this spring and are possibilities at second. “It’s probably the deepest position we have right now,” Zimmerman said. “Dalton Folkema, Nick Ferguson, Ethan Becker, Luke Nietfeld and Dane Ekdom have all seen time there and will compete for at-bats this spring. Newcomers Jackson Nelson and David Dirks will also push for time.”

SPRING PREVIEW

8

Third Base Two players that figure in at the hot-corner are also ones that serve as two of the most consistent hitters in the Bi-son lineup. Junior Austin Selvey and sophomore Pete Henson have played a majority of the time at third base the last two seasons and will both contribute during the season. Other infielders may see time at the position as the season continues. “Another experienced and talented position,” Zimmerman said. “Pete Henson and Austin Selvey are both up-per-level and fundamentally sound players who bring leadership and talent to the corner both offensively and defensively.”

Shortstop NDSU won’t have a shortage at shortstop, with a variety of play-ers looking to see time at the position. Junior Alex Petterson will give the Bison a veteran presence at shortstop, while freshmen Brandon Gonzalez, Ethan Becker and Brady Meyer will see time in the middle of the infield after gaining experience in the fall season. Other freshmen -- like Jackson Nelson and David Dirks -- will look to contribute. The most sure-handed infielder will likely see the most time at the position as the Bison head into conference play. “Alex Petterson, Brandon Gonzalez and Brady Meyer have all shown the ability to stabilize our defense up the middle this fall,” Zimmer-man said. “Along with Nelson and Dirks, we have some quality options at the position.”

Outfield The three outfield positions will have plenty of players rotate in-and-out for NDSU. Senior Andrew Pedersen has the most experience at the club level for the Bison, being the only player remaining from the NDSU contingent that played for MSU-Moorhead when the schools operated as a co-op. Junior Jared Mol has the most power at the plate among the outfielders, while Concordia College fall transfer Nolan Anderson looks to be a factor in home contests. Sophomore Jordan Pansch proved to be a quality hitter for the NDSU squad in the fall, while freshmen Cole Hanson and Mitch Droog-sma showed plenty of ability to be quality players in the field and at the plate during the fall. Both Pedersen and graduate student Chris Thompson -- who played collegiate baseball at Minnesota-Morris -- will be out of the lineup throughout the spring due to other commitments. “Cole Hanson, Jordan Pansch, Mitchell Droogsma and Jared Mol all have the ability to cover the outfield and bring the offensive production we expect out of our outfielders” Zimmerman said. “Musgjered, Butler, Nolan Andrson, and Andrew Pederson are also capable athletes who will see time in the outfield.”

Pitchers The position that may have seen the most notable difference in the last year is on the mound. Gone are head of the rotation starters and in are plenty of newcomers. Ekdom has the most starting experience among the Bison, while sophomore Will Barker and freshman Joe Olson will be heavy contributers out of the bullpen. Other potential starters include freshman Ethan Becker, Brady Meyer and Brandon Gonzalez. “Over the course of the fall and winter, our pitchers have shown significant improvement,” Zimmerman said. “We look for that progress to continue into the spring and out pitching staff to keep us in a lot of games. Brady Meyer, Dane Ekdom, and Ethan Becker have all earned the opportunity to be in our rotation. Nelson, Dirks, Jacob Bruget, and

Gonzalez are also in line to potentially be starters for us. At the back end, Olson helped stabilize our bullpen in the fall and will be asked to continue that role in the spring. Will Barker, Ferguson, Selvy, Halvorson, Butler, and Musgjerd give us a lot of quality out of the bullpen. The guys who show the ability to consistently throw strikes will pitch significant innings for us this spring.”

HEAD COACH’S FILE Kole Zimmerman is in the midst of his first season as the head coach of the North Dakota State University Bison club baseball team. Zimmerman has plenty of experience in the game of baseball, playing and coaching at a variety of levels. His knowledge of the game and accolades along with it make him a coach the club program can strive under, as evidenced with the team’s competitiveness in their second season as a National Club Baseball Association Division II member. The Bison head coach made the transition to full-time coaching after ending a four-year professional playing career with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks of the American Associ-ation Independent Professional Baseball league. In 2011, Zimmerman batted .211 with three doubles, two home runs, 10 RBIs and 23 runs scored in 52 games for Fargo-Moorhead. He also stole five bases, while seeing time at catcher, outfield and designated hitter. The former NDSU star batted .280 with eight doubles, six home runs, 26 RBIs and 32 runs scored in 61 games for the ‘Hawks in 2010. Zimmerman also stole 11 bases and posted a .376 on-base percentage. In his career, Zimmerman hit .248 with 19 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs, 61 RBis and 66 runs scored in 148 games. He posted career-highs in nearly every offensive category in 2010. Zimmerman assisted with the Division I NDSU base-ball for three years after a standout collegiate career as a two-sport athlete. Zimmerman was a catcher, outfielder and first base-man for the Bison from 2004-08. He hit .277 with 14 home runs and 117 RBis in his baseball career and charted 170 tackles in 35 career games for NDSU on the gridiron. A native of Windom, Minn., Zimmerman was a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winner. He completed a bachelor’s degree in history at NDSU in 2006 and a master’s in history at NDSU in 2010. Beyond his efforts with club baseball, Zimmerman coaches traveling teams ages 12-18 in the Fargo-Moorhead area, while also teaching and instructing students of the game at The Ball Yard.
